Efficient service discovery in wide area networks

Brown, Alan January 2008 (has links)
Living in an increasingly networked world, with an abundant number of services available to consumers, the consumer electronics market is enjoying a boom. The average consumer in the developed world may own several networked devices such as games consoles, mobile phones, PDAs, laptops and desktops, wireless picture frames and printers to name but a few. With this growing number of networked devices comes a growing demand for services, defined here as functions requested by a client and provided by a networked node. For example, a client may wish to download and share music or pictures, find and use printer services, or lookup information (e.g. train times, cinema bookings). It is notable that a significant proportion of networked devices are now mobile. Mobile devices introduce a new dynamic to the service discovery problem, such as lower battery and processing power and more expensive bandwidth. Device owners expect to access services not only in their immediate proximity, but further afield (e.g. in their homes and offices). Solving these problems is the focus of this research. This Thesis offers two alternative approaches to service discovery in Wide Area Networks (WANs). Firstly, a unique combination of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the OSGi middleware technology is presented to provide both mobility and service discovery capability in WANs. Through experimentation, this technique is shown to be successful where the number of operating domains is small, but it does not scale well. To address the issue of scalability, this Thesis proposes the use of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) service overlays as a medium for service discovery in WANs. To confirm that P2P overlays can in fact support service discovery, a technique to utilise the Distributed Hash Table (DHT) functionality of distributed systems is used to store and retrieve service advertisements. Through simulation, this is shown to be both a scalable and a flexible service discovery technique. However, the problems associated with P2P networks with respect to efficiency are well documented. In a novel approach to reduce messaging costs in P2P networks, multi-destination multicast is used. Two well known P2P overlays are extended using the Explicit Multi-Unicast (XCAST) protocol. The resulting analysis of this extension provides a strong argument for multiple P2P maintenance algorithms co-existing in a single P2P overlay to provide adaptable performance. A novel multi-tier P2P overlay system is presented, which is tailored for service rich mobile devices and which provides an efficient platform for service discovery.

Does the use of the Internet further democratic participation? : a comparison of citizens' interactions with political representatives in the UK and Germany

Escher, Tobias January 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores the implications of the Internet for democracy, re-evaluating the various claims and counter-claims that have been made for the Internet's democratic potential. Based on a framework to measure democracy that emphasises popular control and political equality, it assesses whether the Internet gives a greater and more representative share of the population the opportunity to participate in the political process by focusing on use of the Internet to contact political representatives. The analysis combines secondary analysis of population surveys with original data collected in two online surveys from more than 14,000 users of successful contact facilitation platforms in the UK (WriteToThem.com) and Germany (Abgeordnetenwatch.de) that enable sending messages to representatives. The results show that in both countries the Internet in general has only marginally increased the number of people engaged in contacting. At the same time, contact facilitation platforms as specific online applications have attracted large numbers of people who have never before contacted a representative. While all online means of contacting primarily amplify traditional participatory biases, such as for gender and education, they can at least selectively engage traditionally under-represented parts of the population, for example young people or low-income groups. The processes that shape these patterns are identified by developing a basic theory of contacting and using the similarities and differences between the findings for the two countries. It demonstrates not only that participation continues to be dominated by traditional determinants that cannot be completely overcome by technology, but also that Internet applications can shape participation patterns – if designed to appropriately adapt to the context in which they operate, which is rarely the case. This highlights the need to think carefully about how online platforms can be used, building on the – albeit limited – gains identified here, to strengthen them as a means of ensuring democratic participation.

Chen, Lunde 29 April 2019 (has links)
The movement towards the digitalization of many industry sectors such as automotive, agriculture, transportation, city management, etc. is revealing the need for novel usages of point-to-multipoint network delivery services, such as massive delivery of software updates to objects, secure and reliable delivery of alert messages to population, etc. On another side, the softwarization of next generation networks, with amongst, the increasing adoption of Software Defined Networks (SDN) is bringing to the network the flexibility and programming capabilities that enable the support of point-to-multipoint delivery services in an efficient and cost-effective way. This PhD work contributes to the general problem of providing point-tomultipoint delivery services with Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in a multidomain SDN network. It also considers that some of the domains are wireless multi hop networks. First, a Steiner tree based network domain topology aggregation combined with a resource allocation heuristic algorithm is proposed to support point-to-multipoint delivery services that span multiple domains. Then, a generic topology discovery service is proposed for SDN based wireless multi-hop networks to let the SDN controller build and maintain a comprehensive view of the network with various node and wireless link attributes. From there, customized views can be exposed by the controller to network control applications, as, for instance, the application in charge of provisioning point-to-multipoint services on a SDN based wireless multi-hop network. An Integer linear programming based algorithm and a genetic algorithm are also proposed for the embedding of point-to-multipoint services on a SDN based multi-radio, multi-channel and multi-hop wireless network. Last, to address the case of dynamic point-to-multipoint services, we propose a resource reallocation scheme that meets the changing requirements while reducing service disruption.

Ανάπτυξη και υλοποίηση τεχνικών εντοπισμού και παρακολούθησης θέσης κυρίαρχης πηγής από δίκτυα τυχαία διασκορπισμένων αισθητήρων / Development and implementation of dominant source localization and tracking techniques in randomly distributed sensor networks

Αλεξανδρόπουλος, Γεώργιος 16 May 2007 (has links)
Object of this postgraduate work are the detection of presence of an isotropic wideband dominant source and the estimate of its coordinates of placement (localization), when the source is found in a three or two dimensional space, which is supervised and watched by a randomly distributed sensor network. The nodes of the network may contain acoustical, vibrational and other MEM-sensing (Micro-Electro-Mechanical) elements. Upon sensing an event of interest, they can self-organize into a synchronized wireless radio network using low-power spread-spectrum transceivers to communicate among themselves and central processors. The detection of presence of a dominant source in a sensor network, with the above characteristics, was achieved with the use of a blind beamforming method, known as the maximum power collection method. This method, which was implemented in the context of this work, provides estimates of the relative time delays of arrival (relative TDEs - Time Delay Estimations) of the dominant source’s signal to the sensors of the network referenced to a reference sensor. The main object of study of the work is the calculation of the dominant eigenvector of the sampled correlation matrix. This is achieved, in the bibliography that was studied, either by using the power method or with use of the SVD method (Singular Value Decomposition). Per snapshot of samples it is required to update the autocorrelation matrix and to calculate the dominant eigenvector. However, the above two methods for this calculation have an increased complexity because the dimension of the matrix is high enough. The contribution of this work lies in the reduction of that complexity by using an adaptive method for the dominant eigenvector calculation. Finally, this work also focuses on the problem of localization and tracking of the coordinates of placement of the dominant source from the estimates of the relative time delays of arrival.
