The influence of individualist and collectivist attributes on responses to Likert-type scalesShulruf, Boaz January 2005 (has links)
Collectivism and individualism are culturally-related psychological structures which have been used to distinguish people within and across various societies. From a review of the literature, it is argued that the most salient feature of individualism is valuing personal independence, which includes self-knowledge, uniqueness, privacy, clear communication, and competitiveness. Collectivism is associated with a strong sense of duty to group, relatedness to others, seeking others' advice, harmony, and working with the group. The purpose of the thesis is to explore how collectivist and individualist attributes affect the way people respond to Likert-type questionnaires. In the first study, a new measurement tool for individualism and collectivism was developed to address critical methodological issues in this field of cross-cultural psychology. This new measure the “Auckland Individualism and Collectivism Scale” defined three dimensions of individualism: (a) Responsibility (acknowledging one's responsibility for one's actions), (b) Uniqueness (distinction of the self from the other) and (c) Compete (striving for personal goals is one's prime interest); and two dimensions of collectivism: (d) Advice (seeking advice from people close to one, before taking decisions), and (e) Harmony (seeking to avoid conflict). The AICS avoids the need for measuring horizontal and vertical dimensions of collectivism and individualism, and the confounding effect of familialism on the collectivism-individualism constructs. The second study investigated the relationship between collectivism and individualism and various response sets that have been reported relating to the way in which individuals respond to Likert-type scales. Using structural equation modelling, the Collectivism-Individualism Model of Response Bias was developed. This model suggests two types of response sets: (a) the Impression-Response Bias which includes response sets such as social desirability and context, that affect the first four stages of responding to questions, namely receiving and retrieving data and making decisions; and (b) the Expression-Response Bias which includes response sets such as the extreme response set and the neutral response set that relate to the application of the responses, namely the actual answer chosen by the respondent. Collectivism is negatively correlated with context and with self deception enhancement whereas individualism is positively correlated with context and self deception enhancement and impression management. Context is positively correlated with extreme response set and negatively correlated with neutral response set. The Collectivism-Individualism Model of Response Bias suggests that collectivist and individualist attributes directly affect the Impression-Response Bias response sets and indirectly affect the Expression-Response Bias response sets. It was concluded that attributes of collectivism and individualism affect the decision made by the respondents and therefore lead to different responses to Likert-type questionnaires. The Psychometric Properties of the Nonrestorative Sleep Scale and a Prospective Observational Study of the Physiological Correlates of Nonrestorative SleepWilkinson, Kate 17 August 2012 (has links)
Nonrestorative sleep refers to the experience of sleep as insufficiently refreshing, often despite the appearance of normal sleep according to objective parameters. As a result, a valid and reliable measure of the subjective experience of NRS is required in order to allow for standardization and comparability in its assessment. This thesis reports the results of a study involving the development and validation of a scale to assess NRS, the Nonrestorative Sleep Scale (NRSS). The psychometric properties of the NRSS were assessed in a group of 256 participants recruited from a sleep clinic population. Principal component analysis revealed four domains. The scale demonstrated good internal and test-retest reliability and reasonable validity compared to other measures. Overnight polysomnographic variables were also compared to scores on the scale and a few were found to be weakly correlated with scale scores. These included alpha EEG, sleep efficiency, and REM latency.

The goal of the present study was to develop and compare two different methods for rating scaffolding between siblings: a thin slice approach and an interval coding approach. Fifty younger (age=3 years) and 50 older (age 3-7 years) siblings interacted for five minutes on a cooperation task and scaffolding during the task was coded for each child. Internal consistency was excellent for the thin slice measure and questionable for the interval measure. Inter-rater reliability was good for both. Thin-slicing was more strongly related to predicted variables (children’s theory of mind, language, age, cooperation, positive and negative behavior) than interval coding, and reduces demands on resources in terms of training and reliability. The development of a reliable and valid measurement for the assessment of child-to-child scaffolding, which involves limited training and is quick to code, will be a useful research and practice tool for developing children’s cooperation skills in applied settings.

Knowledge of the literature pertaining to patterns of performance in normal individuals is essential if we are to understand intraindividual variability in neurocognitive test performance in neuropsychiatric disorders. Twenty-five healthy individuals with a high-level of education were evaluated on a short neuropsychological battery which spanned several cognitive domains. ---Results indicated that cognitive abilities are not equally distributed within a sample of healthy, high-level functioning individuals. This may be of interest to neuropsychologists who might base clinical inference about the presence of cerebral dysfunction, at least in part, on marked variation in a patient’s level of cognitive test performance. The practice of deductive reasoning in clinical neuropsychology may be prone to false-positive conclusions about cognitive functioning in neuropsychiatric disorders where base-rates of cognitive impairments are low and pre-existing educational achievements are high.

The Effects of Cannabis on Cognitive Function in Patients with Multiple SclerosisHonarmand, Kimia 08 December 2011 (has links)
While neuropsychological deficits have been reported in healthy individuals who use cannabis, data in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are lacking. Given that MS is associated with cognitive deterioration, the aim of this study was to determine the cognitive effects of inhaled or ingested cannabis in this population. Fifty MS patients (25 cannabis users and 25 non-users) completed the Minimal Assessment of Cognitive Function in MS battery of neuropsychological tests. Cannabis users had significantly poorer performance on measures of information processing speed, executive functions, and visuospatial perception, and were twice as likely to be classified as globally cognitively impaired. Similar results were found after controlling for potential confounding variables. This study provides evidence that prolonged cannabis use in MS patients is associated with poorer performance on cognitive domains commonly affected in this population. The therapeutic benefits patients may derive from using cannabis should be weighed against the associated cognitive side-effects.

Measuring Phonological Short-term Memory, apart from Lexical KnowledgeKornacki, Tamara 29 November 2011 (has links)
The current research examined whether nonword repetition (NWR) tasks, designed to measure phonological short-term memory, are also influenced by familiarity with lexical representation of a given language. In Study 1, children with and without exposure to Hebrew were administered a NWR task based on the Hebrew language structure (HNWR). On the HNWR, participants with Hebrew exposure significantly outperformed participants who had no familiarity with any Semitic language. This indicates that long-term phonological and lexical knowledge can be used to aid NWR performance. Study 2 investigated whether a NWR task based on a foreign language could minimize the lexicality effect. English speaking undergraduate students rated the less familiar HNWR task to be lower in wordlikeness than English-like NWR tasks. These findings demonstrate that regardless of language background a NWR task based on an unfamiliar language structure is a more valid measure of the phonological processing skills required for vocabulary acquisition.
