The use of parody in Peter Maxwell Davies' Taverner and related works.

Pilkington, Shirley Anne. January 1990 (has links)
Parody is a concept central to much of the work of Peter Maxwell Davies. In this study the First Fantasia on an In Nomine by John Taverner, the Seven In Nomine, the Second Fantasia on an In Nomine by John Taverner and the opera Taverner are used as case studies of Davies' use of parody. Three categories of parody are discerned: parody in its pre-Baroque sense which entails the use of musical material from pre-existing compositions; parody in its modern sense whereby a particular work or style is imitated in such a manner that the source is ridiculed or satirized; and the non-satirical parody of compositional devices, forms or other features characteristic of a particular musical period. All four works examined in this study use the 'In nomine' by the sixteenth-century composer John Taverner as a source of pre-compositional musical material. Each of Davies' In Nomine works is examined in detail and the composer's use of the device and its function in each instance is discussed. The chronological consideration of the In Nomine compositions, and of Taverner in particular, reveals a gradual change in the manner in which Davies employed parody in his compositions. Attention is thus given to the transition from the emphasis on parody in the Renaissance sense to the emphasis on parody in its modern sense and it is shown. that this transition clearly parallels the change that was taking place within Davies' general compositional style during the sixties. In conclusion, some reasons for the predominant role played by parody in Davies' output and the preoccupation with musical materials derived from the pre-Baroque are suggested, in order to show the relevance of Davies' use of parody within a twentieth-century context. / Thesis (M.Mus.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1990.

The Anabaptist vision of Rudy Wiebe : a study in theological allegoresis

Hildebrand, George H. January 1982 (has links)
Typological methods and a scheme of Protestant iconography constitute the fiction of Rudy Wiebe. This structure and style are the necessary consequences of an artistic vision that is self-consciously Christian and evangelical. After a brief discussion of the problem of belief and literature, the dissertation presents Wiebe's Anabaptist theology and examines the typological and parabolical means by which Christian beliefs can become a method of composition. Wiebe's project is to create a fiction in which realistically presented lives and actions exist consubstantially with the gospel of Jesus. A pervasive iconic imagery and ironic reference result in a carefully controlled evangelical "sentence," one which allows Wiebe a fictional re-enactment of the incarnation. In Peace Shall Destroy Many, First and Vital Candle, and The Blue Mountains of China. Wiebe experiments with retrospective typology and with analogical sacrificial actions. In the historical novels (The Temptations of Big Bear, The Scorched-Wood People, The Mad Trapper), he exploits typology proper, giving epistemological authority to his chronicles of faith by establishing the hermeneutical divide in history itself. The gospel is again present, but now it is almost entirely anticipatory and ironic. The dissertation concludes by speculating about Wiebe's latest experiment in evangelical fiction, the self-regarding dramatization of a Christian Wiebe-persona acting in a documentary present.

This research found that the foundation of that educational institution had as its main goal to make available to the students a rural education because this objective is directly realated to the historical valorization of the agriculture by the northeastern rural agrarian elite, as a vital way to achieve the progress after 1930 Revolution. The aims of this research were: 1) Set up the commented chronology of the school in order to allow a reflexive appreciation of its trajectory. 2) Understand the pedagogical bases of the school, focusing on the rural thought and the support of the New School directrixes. 3) Try to identify and to analyse the changings and the continuities in the formation proposals of the teachers through the 113 issues published during the period of time mentioned above(1934-1974). We used historic and printed sources, these undestood in their multiple possibilities of materialization, cross reference and interpretation, using as an universe of search 113 editions of the O Lavrador, once this newspaper was published for this very school, and distributed by it in the first year of his foundation. We tried to show the results obtained in the contents examining, emphasizing the attention given by that paper on subjects related to the agricultural worker’s life, main events and pedagogical pactices of the school and the divers articles written by the very students. The five decades studied in which the paper existed, allowed us to delimitate de differences and we were able to identify the following features: 1) 1930 – it was the beginning and also the golden era of the school showing the prestige and the notoriety of the Pedagogical Ruralism had in the education of Ceará State; 1940 – the continuity of the previous decade with intense activities; 3) 1950 – is remembered as the time of the publication of many speeches on Ruralims and the celebration of the birthday of Mrs. Amélia; 4) 1960 – it is the beginning of the decline of the issuing of the newspaper and 5) 1970 – it is the end of the school due to the lack of the rural spirit that animate the school during its entire life. The trajectory of the paper was one of deep finnancial difficulties. The word “fight” is always linked to the celebration of the anniversary of the paper as a demonstration of the finnancial difficulties faced by that institution.

A força do estético: reflexões sobre a refuncionalização da arte em \"Pós-modernismo ou a lógica cultural do capitalismo tardio\", de Fredric Jameson / The power of the aesthetic: reflections on art refunctionalization in \"Postmodernism or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism\", by Fredric Jameson

Gabriela Corbisier Tessitore 05 December 2013 (has links)
This study intends to investigate, from the confrontation of the thesis prepared by Fredric Jameson in Postmodernism or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, with an analysis on the historical materiality, the extent of the fusion of the base and superestructure in late capitalism. In this sense, it seeks to clarify where Jamesons essay helps to understand the dominance of postmodernism and how it is unsufficient to explain the situation of material production in areas where neoliberalism and globalization are not developed and, therefore, do not respond fully to the cultural logic that animates financial capitalism. In other words, it is necessary a reality test of the ideology of postmodernism beyond the borders of the Anglo-Saxon world. Thus, it is discussed the possibility of Jamesons thesis of base and superestructure stage of late capitalism be restricted to countries where both flexible accumulation and financial globalization indeed ocurred. This research also aims to make considerations about Jamsons prose in order to point some of its effects and its relations with the denouncing contents of this essay and estabilish their correspondences with the method of the Frankfurt School, more specifically, the one of Theodor Adorno.

“The Prophetic American Voice of Our Day”: The Implications of Wendell Berry’s Cultural Critique for American Education in the Twenty-first Century

Driver, Betty Ann January 2018 (has links)
This study examines Wendell Berry’s cultural critique to identify implications for American education. It explores three themes in Berry’s fiction: land and place, community, and character, and considers Berry’s observations about education in his non-fiction and interviews. The health of natural resources is a fundamental value for Berry who believes that human beings have a moral obligation to be stewards of the Earth. Practicing stewardship enables the creation of valuable places. A vital connection links the health of the natural world and human community. Healthy communities are radically inclusive, work for a sustainable future, and care for those with special needs. Community “members” exemplify qualities of character, knowledge of the community, good work, and neighborliness, all essential for responsible stewardship. The study assesses Berry’s claims that: (1) formal schooling often lacks vibrant association with the local community; (2) our reliance on discrete academic disciplines fosters over-specialization and academic isolation; and (3) the standard for education should be revamped to focus on the health of the community rather than job preparation. American education often serves economic and political agendas that ignore the well-being of natural resources and human communities. In spite of our daunting challenges, Berry maintains hope and charts constructive steps forward. Students learn best, he believes, through apprenticeship and mentoring. The study concludes that with substantive changes education can play a major role in enabling students to grasp the needs of a healthy, life-supporting planet and to develop the skills, values, and disciplines of responsible community members. Replacing corporate-dominated, technology-driven, and shortsighted attitudes and behaviors with restorative practices and values requires commitment from all of society’s sectors, and perhaps especially from our schools, colleges, and universities.
