Philippe Sollers considère que la fiction est plus réelle que la vie. C'est le point de départ d'un projet d'écriture qui place son expérience au diapason d'une quête de démystification des idéaux de la modernité. Sa stratégie consiste à faire de sa vie un roman ou un essai pour tenter de vivre « le plus fictivement possible ». De là l'importance d'approcher son oeuvre comme une activité autobiographique conçue non pour flatter le Moi (comme beaucoup le croient), mais pour s'allier aux écrivains les plus fervents de « l'expérience des limites » et, avec eux, se faire le révélateur des idéologies et du fanatisme. Sollers souhaite ainsi élever le soupçon au rang de style littéraire, repérant les imposteurs assujettis au conformisme de l'époque. Créant un jeu ironique à l'intérieur duquel les contradictions agissent comme une stratégie de confrontation volontaire, Sollers prétend éviter la récupération par le monde médiatique soumis aux impératifs de la lisibilité. Ce jeu littéraire va ainsi à contre-courant de la culture commerciale divertissante tout en n'hésitant pas à s'y mesurer en participant à son spectacle. Sollers, dans un ouvrage comme Mystérieux Mozart, développe en effet une stratégie autobiographique d'opposition qui consiste à mettre en valeur des figures de légèreté, d'érotisme, de liberté. Ses références reposent toujours sur des choix esthétiques qui transgressent « la conformité au nihilisme ambiant ». Dans cet univers éminemment référentiel, Sollers construit ses alliances pour mener ce qu'il appelle une « guerre du goût ». Dans ce système de masques, il s'agit en fait de retrouver le « Paradis ». Celui, perdu, de l'enfance comme celui de la langue et du Verbe (pour reprendre les termes mêmes de l'écrivain). Pour soutenir cette logique du paradis, Sollers ramène au jour un monde de valeurs. C'est donc en moraliste qu'il organise sa stratégie qui lui permet d'élaborer une conception critique du monde moderne dont la littérature serait l'instrument et la condition du « bonheur vrai ». This thesis is a comprehensive thematic study of the unique prose poetry collection Wild Grass by the famous modern Chinese writer Lu Xun. It provides a general survey of previous Wild Grass studies both in China and abroad in the past 70 years in Chapter 1. The survey clarifies the achievements and defects of those studies, and finds that they are still insufficient and can and should be further expanded. By employing a comprehensive methodology, including close reading, rhetorical analysis, intertextual interpretation, and some standard psychoanalytic insights, the thesis explores the themes of Wild Grass on three different levels. In Chapter 2, on the historical level, the thesis reveals the theme of social and political criticism of the dark reality of mid- 19208 China. In Chapter 3, some Wild Grass poems are interpreted on the philosophical level to show the theme of Lu Xun's meditations on the ego, will to life, and the meaning of human existence. In Chapter 4, the thesis examines some Wild Grass poems on the emotional level to display Lu Xun's dilemma of love and moral responsibilities at a crucial juncture of his life when he contemplated deserting his old-style wife and accepting a young lady's love. Some poems are informed by a strong awareness of repentance, which is essentially an embodiment of Lu Xun's sense of morality and responsibility. In its conclusion, the thesis summarizes the intellectual and artistic values of Wild Grass, deeming it a magnificent book marking a creative peak in Lu Xun's career and an achievement in modern Chinese literature of the twentieth century. Lu Xun's spirit of struggle, awareness of repentance, and subjective emotion and lyricism that are incorporated in Wild Grass have become an important legacy for Chinese literature and the Chinese people. The symbolic and surrealistic features, the expressionistic characterization, the structure of the logical dilemma, and elegant language make Wild Grass a great modern masterpiece.

A. S. Byatt attempts to recover lost voices in Possession and Angels and Insects (a collection of two novellas) by examining the limiting roles of women in literature and society. Chapter one examines Possession in which the characters search for their connections to the literary past, ultimately locating them through a lesser-known, female, Victorian poet. In chapter two I consider "Morpho Eugenia," the first novella in Angels and Insects. Byatt illustrates how the male gaze names women and defines their roles. In the second novella, "The Conjugial Angel," analyzed in chapter three, Byatt (re)tells Emily Jesse's story, one formerly appropriated by Alfred Tennyson in In Memoriam. I conclude that Byatt attempts to relocate her heroines from the margins to the center by deconstructing hierarchical patterns of storytelling. Rather than replacing male-monopolized narratives with female ones, Byatt undermines the dominating viewpoint by demonstrating the way in which it obscures all other perspectives.
