Graciano, Igor Ximenes January 2008 (has links)

______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Sérgio Sant’Anna’s narratives can be characterized by the concept of self-reflexive conscience, as it was developed by Hayden White, for they invariably tend towards their own mechanisms of representing the world and “the other”. Therefore, the literary gesture – the disclosure in the fictional text of the difficulties and consequences of creative writing – becomes a central theme in Sant’Anna’s work. In order to analyze this aspect in his literary corpus, this thesis was divided in three chapters, each one focusing in one aspect of Sant’Anna’s literary gesture. The first chapter deals with the limits, or the insufficiency, imposed by this gesture, whether as an expression of a generation’s anxieties or as a practice that is incomplete in relation to other arts, in particular the plastic arts. The second chapter focuses on the narratives in which the result of the literary gesture presents itself as a farce. In contrast with the first chapter’s discussion, which deals with the insufficiency of literary expression, the main questioning here is the legitimacy of that expression, since the narratives are conceived as pure artifact, in which the characters are only faked masks of the authorial voice. Finally, the third chapter is centered on works that serve as the starting point in which to speculate about how far the fictional discourse goes beyond the literary sphere, revealing the relations between individuals in the “real world”. In those works, it is apparent that the narrator is trying to bring the reader closer to his own perspective, at which time the narrative resembles a game in which the prize is the complicity between narrator and reader. Hence, it is suggested a two-way street in which life constitutes and is constituted by the imaginary, and vice-versa. In the words of Carlos Santeiro, a character in Um romance de geração, it is all about the “possible possibilities” of the text and beyond the text itself, since the agreement between author and reader takes in the presuppositions of many discursive instances, whether they are fictional or not.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This thesis aims to analyze the paths taken from two contemporary Brazilian writers, Jair Vitória and Sérgio SantAnna, both were published in the Seventies and in the Eighties, by editora Ática, in a collection called Autores Brasileiros. Those two writers have followed much different careers and paths inside the Brazilian literary field. Sérgio SantAnna is today, one of the consecrated names in Brazilian literature, with books translated to other languages and adaptations for the cinema and theater. Jair Vitória, although being published in the same collection that SantAnna participated, wasnt legitimated in the literary field. The differences in their literary paths, according to this thesis, are that extra-literary aspect, such as family origin, privileged experiences, like the access to education and cultural products, and contacts with the agents from the literary and intellectual field, in the Seventies and in the Eighties, and today. Obviously, the position of each of those writers has influenced their reportorial choices and formal experiences. It is possible to observe that the extra-literary aspects influenced the literary ones. It is still an aim to this thesis show the characteristics of the Autores Brasileiros collection, its changes throughout its publication more than ten years and its real contribution as a legitimated agent for the unknown writers inside the Brazilian literary field.
