Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The research assignment examines pertinent factors affecting the political, economic and social landscape of the development of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Domestic conditions within the PRC are influencing its foreign policy behaviour in the international arena. The PRC's internal environment will thus determine the extent of its external presence. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die werkstuk bestudeer die relevante faktore wat die politieke, ekonomiese en sosiale landskap ten opsigte van die Republiek van China (PRC) se holistiese ontwikkeling beïnvloed. Omstandighede binne die Republiek beïnvloed die land se buitelandse beleidsgedrag in die internasionale arena. Dit sal dus regverdig wees om te sê dat binnelandse faktore 'n beslissende rol speel ten opsigte van hoe die land homself binne die globale arena hanteer.

The main question here is about the foundation of the hydroelectric power station of itaipu in 1976, when the native people are involved with the construction of the barrier, later on there is a conflict between the natives and the owners of the Itaipu concerning the land. This research project helps to analyze many news articles characteristics that were written in this region, combining these, we will be able to know more about these natives. The observation of these documents indicates the difference between the ideological posture of news papers and the editorial line of each one, both with similar interest, motivated mainly by the politics and the regional economy. They are elements that influenced succession of the news and the configuration of the natives in the regional news, these vary between omission and denunciation / Esta dissertação tem o objetivo de identificar através, da análise de alguns jornais de circulação na região Oeste do Estado do Paraná, as transformações sofridas pelos indígenas Avá-Guarani com a construção da Usina Hidrelétrica de Itaipu e conseqüente inundação de suas terras com a formação do reservatório de água no Rio Paraná. O recorte temporal em questão pontua-se do início dos alicerces da Usina hidrelétrica de Itaipu em 1976, quando as terras indígenas são comprometidas para a construção da barragem, se estendendo às duas décadas seguintes, quando se desencadeia um embate entre indígenas e Itaipu pela demarcação da terra. A pesquisa se sustenta na análise das noticias divulgadas pela mídia escrita na região, que permitem visualizar características distintas adotadas pelos jornais, de acordo com o seu compromisso, que perpassa tanto representações de ausência, como de presença na abordagem sobre estes indígenas. Essa observação dos documentos indicou diferenças entre a postura ideológica dos jornais e a linha editorial de cada um, vinculadas a um tipo particular de interesse, motivado principalmente pela política e economia regional. São elementos que tiveram influência na sucessão das notícias e na configuração da questão indígena na imprensa regional, que variam entre a omissão e a denúncia
