Sunday Herald is the date of its establishment, the year 1891, the oldest expatriate general periodical. It represents an interesting probe into the way of thinking expatriate community over time, due to historicals events in Europe is also becoming a journal created by exiles. Reflection on the events of 1989 shows the wiewpoint of its creators, for the most part voluntary contributors evaluation evolution from a distance and taking into account their own life experiences and ideas. Texts excel straightforward rawness, linguistic style and emphasis on the Czech national tradition reminiscent of the world thought the first half of the twentieth century. The reason is the mix of authors and contributors, there are basically two groups, the first, settlers living in the United States for many generations are taking linguistic composition of the czech language and intellectual world of his parents and grandparents, second, post ,,February,, and a smaller part, post ,,August,, exiles to bring the picture of home in form, it would be remembered at the time of their escape. Film and TV School (FAMU) is one of the three faculties of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. The Academy educates its students in the field of cinema, television, digital media and communication. It was founded on the 28th November 1946. In my work I have focused on the period after the Velvet Revolution in 1989 to 1993 in which FAMU was seeking its own new identity and shape. I have decided to border this period by the year 1993 because of the changes in legislation. The new Act 273/1993 provided some new perspectives on production, distribution and archivation of audiovisual works which led into the cancellation of the state monopoly in this field. At first I have focused on the history of the faculty and the most important moments which led to changes. I have listed the professors of the most important creative departments so I was able to provide a more detailed analysis of the key topics. One of the most important parts of my thesis is FAMU during the years of the Velvet Revolution because it is the period that brought the biggest changes. I have followed in providing the analysis of the faculty after the transformation including the breakdown of the staff and the appraisal of the inner structure. Une etude des pieces de jeunesse d'Armand Salacrou (l'incroyant en quete d'une imprudence divine)Stokle, Norman January 1961 (has links)
Le casseur d'assiettes, Tour à terre, Le pont de l'Europe et Patchouli contiennent les thèmes majeurs du théâtre d'Armand Salacrou. Par l'analyse de ces quatre ouvrages, qui constituent le théâtre de sa jeunesse, cette thèse tâche de se mettre aux prises avec les idées métaphysiques de l'auteur.
Le thème dominant - celui des tentatives d'une humanité désespérée à provoquer 'une imprudence divine' - aussi bien que des thèmes associés - l'absurdité de la vie, le problème de maintenir une morale claire sans référence à la religion, le concept d'un déterminisme mécaniste - tous sont illustrés par une étude de chacune de ces quatre pièces à leur tour.
Après une note biographique sur Salacrou qui fait mention, en particulier, des influences principales sur sa pensée et son oeuvre, nous avons esquissé les idées métaphysiques de son théâtre.
Les chapitres III, IV, V et VI se consacrent respectivement, à une analyse, en ordre chronologique, de ses quatre pièces de jeunesse. D'abord, Le casseur d'assiettes établit le ton du théâtre salacrlen - il faut que l'homme réveille Dieu de son sommeil célèste pour provoquer 'une imprudence divine'. Dans Tour à terre, c'est par un 'dérèglement de tous les sens' auprès d'Isabelle, que Pierre espère causer une telle imprudence. Le pont de l'Europe est une suite de la même recherche désespérée, mais cette fois, Jérôme, le héros, se tourne vers son propre passé à l'espoir de trouver une solution au mystère de la vie. Patchouli - personnage qui donne le titre à la quatrième pièce - cherche une preuve de l'existence de Dieu au cours d'une investigation dans l'histoire.
La conclusion de cette thèse met en perspective le théâtre de jeunesse de Salacrou par rapport à toute son oeuvre théâtrale. Nous verrons comment ses idées métaphysiques, annoncées des les premières pièces, attelgnent leur pleine expression dans les pièces de sa maturité. The aesthetics of either/or in Samuel Beckett's novelsMurphy, Peter January 1970 (has links)
This thesis is concerned basically with the philosophical and aesthetic implications of the "yes or no" dialectic in Samuel Beckett's novels. While some aspects of this problem have been noted by critics (especially Richard Coe and Hugh Kenner), their full significance has not been elaborated. This thesis is especially indebted to Hugh Kenner’s provocative discussion
of "art in a closed field" in Flaubert, Joyce and Beckett: The Stoic Comedians. But a new line of exploration
is opened up by developing the notion of "art in a closed field" in conjunction with Kierkegaard's philosophy of either/or and Beckett's "yes or no." Such an approach allows for an awareness of the "existential " nature of Beckett's writings and helps emphasize the urgency of the emotional appeal of Beckett's characters as they make their "choices." A key question the thesis attempts continually to answer is: what are the nature and consequences of this "choice" made within the closed field of art and life?
In Murphy the “yes or no" theme is dealt with in terms of the dualisms of Cartesianism and schizophrenia. (Note: Since the completion of my thesis, G.C. Barnard's Samuel Beckett: A New Approach which deals extensively with schizophrenia has appeared. He fails, however, to relate the psychological with the philosophical dimensions of Beckett's art and thought.). My own attempt to come to terms with Beckett is eclectic - but all discussions centre around the "yes or no" conundrum.
A significant contribution to the study of Beckett's thought is, I believe, made in the discussion of Watt by indicating the relevancy of Kant and Hume to Beckett's philosophy of form - his aesthetics of the absurd. Beckett's indebtedness to Enlightenment thought,
especially Descartes, has been recognized since Kenner's pioneer work. But the extended discussion of this debt in terms of Kant and Hume shows the complexity of this heritage as it influences Beckett's art.
Tracing still further this intellectual tradition in the trilogy Molloy, Malone Dies, The Unnamable, it is possible to discern Beckett's Kierkegaardian-like parody of Hegelian rationalism and aesthetics. The philosophical underpining of Beckett's progressive treatment of the "yes or no" dialectic is thus made clearer. The discussion
of How It Is in terms of the pornographic form illustrates how Beckett's relentless pursuit of his artistic premises' leads him to a unique philosophical treatment of what is usually regarded as a sub-literary genre.
The conclusion, "No's Knife," deals briefly with some of the social and cultural implications of Beckett's art. This area of Beckett criticism is most weak and is often marred by an obvious failure to study in depth Beckett's work. The strategies of waiting : a study of action in Samuel Beckett's playsWhite, Richard Kerry January 1968 (has links)
This essay is principally concerned with the nature and possibilities of action in Samuel Beckett1s four major stage plays: Waiting for Godot, Endgame, Krapp's Last Tape, and Happy Bays. The problem arises from the fact that each of these plays is organically inconclusive, indicating that the action is not causally structured in the Aristotelean sense. Action is therefore examined in terms of the characters' separate activities: how they are initiated and terminated, their internal order, and their relation to each play as a whole.
The three basic sources employed for criteria are Beckett's critical essay, Proust; his early novels, Murphy and Watt; and Johan Huizinga's Homo Ludens. Proust provides a clear indication of Beckett's theories on time, habit, and friendship; Murphy and Watt are seen as character prototypes; and Homo Ludens is useful in that it supplies a working definition of play.
After a detailed examination of each play in the above terms, the general conclusion reached is that in all cases Beckett has portrayed a state of being as opposed to a process of becoming. In other words, the characters feel and act as though they are caught in an endless present: in their situations they feel cut off from their past, and at the same time they cannot plan and project their activities toward a known goal, for the future is completely uncertain. Consequently, aside from those moments when the characters have no effective control over their actions, and aside from those actions governed by some form of necessity, everything they do during the course of the plays is done simply to fill the enormous void of time.
Considered separately, each activity or strategy of waiting is seen to conform to the characteristics of play as defined by Huizinga, and furthermore, each activity is seen as a habitual response to reality. The similarities between one activity and another are conditioned by two fundamental factors: a subject-object dichotomy, or the relation between the individual, the world, and other people; and death, the one event in human life which is certain, but not fixed. The differences between the various activities, on the other hand, are conditioned primarily by the ages of the characters: the older a character is the more he loses contact with the world and other people, and this affects the scope of his activities.
It is finally concluded that Beckett has portrayed the fundamental isolation of western man—the tragicomedy of individualism. This thesis deals with the design and construction of a variable geometry truss (VGT) of the double-octahedral (pyramid-pyramid) geometry. The truss is expected to be the focus of several experimental research projects. In this thesis, a kinematic model is formulated, and the forward and inverse kinematic problems are solved. Issues of motor and instrumentation choices are addressed. Dimensional choices and the important problems of joint design are examined. A computer simulation is performed for force and vibration analysis.
A fully collapsible double-octahedral variable geometry truss with three degrees of freedom was built using NC machining technologies. An improved second generation twenty-one degree-of-freedom truss will be built based on this original test article. / Master of Science

An evaluation of changes in supply structure on the economic viability of farm supply cooperativesVogler, Larry L. January 1989 (has links)
The volatile economic world of agriculture in the past two decades has had a significant impact on agribusinesses. Among these agribusinesses are farm supply cooperatives. Consolidation of farm supply cooperative stores could help to correct many inefficiencies which they face. This research attempted to create a model which would help cooperative managers consider consolidation of cooperative stores or product lines as a method to correct inefficiencies and lower the costs of doing business. A microcomputer based linear programming model which simulates the product/trade flows of a farm supply cooperative trade area was developed. This model simulates consumer behavior by minimizing the net cost (purchase price plus cost of transport) of purchasing agricultural supplies to the patron. Using the simulated product flows, the financial situation of the trade area was presented. The model was tested by analyzing several consolidation scenarios based on the costs, prices, and asset capacities of a sample trade area. Consolidation of the feed and fertilizer product lines into one location was found to be a very successful cost saving scenario for the sample trade area. / Master of Science
