The increased awareness of the cemetery and its importance to the city's history created numerous requests for the purchase of burial plots. As a result, a 1965 ordinance that had ended the sale of burial plots in the cemetery was overturned allowing for the interment or dispersal of ashes on the cemetery's grounds. Despite it's rediscovery, the Old City Cemetery remains a tranquil place. Today, visitors come for various reasons. For many, the cemetery's Confederate section, surrounded by 10 foot boxwoods and filled with majestic sugar maples looming over rows of small stone markers, is the main attraction. But for others, the cemetery is a place of solitude. Panoramic views of the distant mountains and the timeless essence of this "garden cemetery" provide an atmosphere for contemplation. / Master of Architecture

All places in the world have multiple levels of existence. Of these, we can establish a fairly clear distinction between the specific and the universal. Within the uniqueness of a place's specific, local qualities can be found the common universals that they represent. Here lies the shared experience of all mankind. When people travel, they come into contact with new places and people with whom they have mutually unfamiliar experiences. When they share these experiences, an important cross-fertilization occurs in which people learn not only about other possible existences, but also more about their own. Even more importantly, they gain new vantage points from which to examine universal truths and to know a poetic existence. This thesis is an exploration of this exchange and how it can reach its fullest potential using the means of architecture. / Master of Architecture

Quinze sujets souffrant de cauchemars chroniques depuis une moyenne de 13.7 ans sont assignés aléatoirement à deux groupes: traitement immédiat et traitement différé. Les sujets sont traités pendant quatre semaines à l'aide de la technique d'exposition imaginaire de scénarios altérés. Celle-ci consiste à modifier par écrit la fin du déroulement d'un cauchemar, puis à visualiser à l'état de veille les images constituant cette nouvelle histoire. Les sujets sont évalués au pré et post-traitement pour la fréquence des cauchemars et la qualité du sommeil (agenda quotidien du sommeil et des cauchemars), ainsi que pour la détresse psychologique (SCL-90-R, IASTA, IDB). Une réduction de la fréquence et de l'intensité des cauchemars est rapportée pendant le traitement. Cependant lors de l'évaluation post-traitement aucune réduction de la fréquence des cauchemars chez les deux groupes n'a été démontrée. Il semble que l'arrêt de l'exposition après les quatre semaines de traitement a entraîné une augmentation considérable des cauchemars. Cet effet d'augmentation étant jusqu'ici inconnu, de futures recherches sont à considérer. Des alternatives sont également discutées.

The electoral process of 1996 is configured in a political arrangement in the city whose bid is based on democratic principles in order to enhance the citizenship and social rights In that context aims to assess the practices of the Participatory Budget through the relationship established between civil society and municipal administration noting the areas of sociability the strategies the learning and its developments in the city everyday They also want to score and limits the progress of relations between different social actors in view of a democratic and participatory management. / Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar avaliar e socializar as práticas de gestão participativa e democrática vivenciadas no município de Sobral com enfoque na experiência do Orçamento Participativo estimulada pela Prefeitura no período compreendido entre os anos 1997 a 2004 Esta experiência proporcionou ao município a articulação das principais forças vivas no território e ao mesmo tempo demarcou outro momento político após passar quatro décadas mergulhado num contexto político em que predominavam as práticas clientelistas e paternalistas Essa situação nos remete a questionamentos referentes aos alcances das mudanças e os desafios que um modelo de gestão democrática deve enfrentar ao buscar introduzir alguns espaços e canais para perseguir uma gestão compartilhada envolvendo representantes da sociedade civil e da administração pública como foi a proposta para Sobral no período abordado. O processo eleitoral de 1996 configurou-se em um arranjo político no município cuja proposta se alicerçava em princípios democráticos de modo a valorizar a cidadania e os direitos sociais. Nesse contexto pretende-se avaliar as práticas do Orçamento Participativo através da relação instituída entre a sociedade civil e a administração municipal verificando os espaços de sociabilidades, as estratégias, os aprendizados e seus desdobramentos no cotidiano do município Também se pretende pontuar os avanços e os limites das relações entre os diferentes atores sociais na perspectiva de uma gestão democrática e participativa.

En el presente trabajo pretendo examinar críticamente el pensamiento de Paulo Freire, específicamente en dos de sus primeras obras: La educación como práctica de la libertad y La pedagogía del oprimido. Dichas obras representan lo que podríamos llamar la primera etapa de su pensamiento. En ellas se establecen las líneas generales que, con algunas variaciones, seguirán presentes a través de toda su obra. Mi intención es reconstruir el concepto de ‘vocación ontológica’, el cual desempeña un papel fundamental en su obra. Según él, los hombres tienen como vocación ontológica el humanizarse, el ser más, el ser sujetos. Lo opuesto de su vocación ontológica es la deshumanización, la reificación. Espero mostrar algunas consecuencias políticas de tal concepción.
