Revealing Elements

Queen, Andrew Micheal 14 May 2001 (has links)
The design and construction of a building presents many conditions where materials must be joined and many opportunities where the workings may be revealed. By revealing the additive process, the joining of the pieces, the connecting of the elements, and the relation of the parts to the whole, one may discover the workings and gain an understanding of the thing. It is within this understanding, this awareness of materials, that we may strengthen our connection with a place. The vehicle for studying these ideas of architecture is a public library for the town of Riner, Virginia. The building is a construction of elements; base, frame, enclosure, division, and machines. It is in how these things are put together with hierarchy, importance, truth, and honesty where one gets to architecture. / Master of Architecture

Poulin, Sandra 01 March 2021 (has links)

requiem: a chapel for blacksburg virginia

Hillery, Alice 25 July 2001 (has links)
The wall in Architecture is primary and paramount. In a hierarchical comparison with other elements, the wall is dominant because of the inherent potential housed within to inform our experience of place. It does more than divide what is in from what is out. It is where Architecture begins its presencing. The juxtaposition of man within nature is always violent. In this role as reconciliator of form and environment the wall shapes our perception of being in nature. The architecture of the wall is the spatial record of the drama between interior and exterior forces acting upon it. We construct walls to keep out from becoming in. At the same time, the wall is where a controlled out is allowed in. What penetrates our world, must come through the wall. The wall must be made to accept openings, carry loads, or transfer that load elsewhere. The wall is a deliberate or delicate connection to the earth. The wall accepts, reflects, mediates, or rejects all that it is confronted with. Architecturally, permanence is expressed by means of the wall. By following the wall, one can understand the configuration of the internal vessel, its perimeter, its zones of focus, and the relationship of parts to the whole. "By knowing the limits of something, you really know something. Then you know its order, because you know its limits...but if you don't know its limits, then you don't know its order..." L.Kahn / Master of Architecture

Image-contact : expériences de transitivité

Volpe, Giorgia 25 April 2018 (has links)

Arce Arce, Gerardo Alberto 26 April 2012 (has links)
Tesis

NATO's response to the 11 September 2001 terrorism : lessons learned

Kouzmanov, Krassi 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This thesis analyzes NATO's decisions and actions in response to the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States and assesses the probable future role of the Alliance in combating international terrorism. In September-October 2001 the United States chose to lead a coalition against the Al Qaida terrorists and their supporters in Afghanistan instead of ceding the initiative to NATO. The necessity for rapid decisions and action, the military capabilities gap between the United States and the European allies, and the lessons of NATO's air campaign in the 1999 Kosovo crisis probably led the United States to make this choice. NATO's contributions to the campaign against terrorism have included sending Airborne Warning and Control Systems aircraft to the United States, deploying naval forces to the Eastern Mediterranean, and conducting preventive action against terrorist groups acting within or from the Balkans. NATO's responses to the 11 September attacks, the unconventional and asymmetric threat posed by international terrorism, and the distinct contributions that the military can make in combating terrorism support the main hypothesis examined in this study: that NATO may be unable to play more than specific limited roles in the fight against international terrorism. / Major, Bulgarian Army
