Identidade e cooperação : os governos Kirchner e Lula e a construção de uma identidade coletiva em defesa (2003-2010) /

Milani, Lívia Peres. January 2016 (has links)
Abstract: The main subject of the present work is Argentina and Brazil governments' conception of national identity and regional cooperation in the period between 2003 and 2010. The main objective was to analyze in which ways the governments related the regional dimension and the national one, with emphasis in Defense cooperation. Therefore, it was intended to analyze if these governments have provoked changes in the identity representations of Brasil and Argentina, with influences in each country perception of South America, how the reciprocal relationship was defined, if there was formulated new narratives and which policies were proposed for South America. It was analyzed as well how the two countries acted in the region, in de South Defense Council (SDC) formulation and in the main regional crisis that occurred in that period. The methodology was based in documental analysis of Brazil and Argentina representatives' pronouncements, normative defense documents and in its actions during the period. It was also necessary to contextualize historically the reciprocal interactions and the relations of each country with South America. The conclusion is that in Brazil and also in Argentina, national identity was combined with a conception of regional collectivity. Nevertheless, the collective representation remains fragile, in spite of the developments in the period between 2003 and 2010, and the national dimension prevails strongly. / Mestre

France, Italy and the 2002/2003 Iraq crisis

Fenton, Anne Marie 09 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / France opposed the US-led intervention in Iraq in March 2003 while Italy supported it. Domestic dynamics, including popular opinion and growing concern for Muslim sentiment, exerted a secondary influence on those decisions. Other factors that influenced the leaders of France and Italy to take opposing stances on the prospective intervention included security and threat assessments. Discord in US-French relations was exacerbated by disagreements over other international issues, especially the role of the UN Security Council. This thesis assesses the relative weight of these various factors in the French and Italian decisions, and examines the interplay of the key national decisions made by American, French and Italian leaders. The thesis concludes that French and Italian decisions were influenced by factors in addition to the issues in question-that is, whether the Iraqi regime had complied with the UN Security Council resolutions calling for the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and certain delivery means and, if not, whether the use of force was an appropriate and justified course of action. It also concludes that the severe damage to US-French relations may be overcome as Paris and Washington cooperate in meeting international security responsibilities. The European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy may face greater challenges, owing to the significant intra-EU differences revealed during the Iraq crisis. / Major, United States Air Force

Why they hate us : disaggregating the Iraqi insurgency / Disaggregating the Iraqi insurgency

Steliga, Mark A. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution unlimited / The violent and diffuse nature of the Iraqi insurgency has become a major obstacle to reconstruction and the withdrawal of coalition military forces. The central problem with the coalition's counterinsurgency strategy is that it fails to take into account the diverse goals and historical motivations of the groups involved. A coalition counterinsurgency strategy flexible enough to deal with Iraq's insurgent groups differently as opposed to monolithically will be more effective in achieving stability in Iraq. This thesis argues that the Iraqi insurgency can be disaggregated into categories that will better assist policy makers in identifying and understanding insurgent groups. Sunni, Shi'ite, and transnational categories are used to divide insurgents, showing each to have specific traits. Categories of insurgents are further divided, where insurgent groups are examined in more detail. Based on the disaggregation, recommendations for counterinsurgency strategy orientations are proposed. America's longterm legacy in the Middle East will depend on the conditions of our departure from Iraq. It is only through a more thorough understanding of Iraq's insurgent groups and the proper application of a counterinsurgency strategy which accounts for the differences between groups that America will be able to make this legacy a positive one.

Production of A thousand clowns

Sowle, Clifford John 01 June 1968 (has links)
The project chosen for partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching in the field of Theater Arts was the production of Herb Gardner’s comedy, A Thousand Clowns. This particular play was chosen because it met production requirements more closely than any other script considered for the project. The project involved, after selection of the script, casting the characters, a six-week rehearsal period, consulting with the technical staff on matters of lighting, setting, and costumes, four performances at the Portland State College Idea Theater, two performances at the Oregon State Penitentiary, and the compiling of a complete Play Production Book which describes all phases of the production. Existing standards of play direction and projection book composition were observed throughout the production period. Special emphasis was placed on each actor’s development of his character, remembering that an educational theater situation is also a learning situation for all concerned. Character relationships became extremely important to the sense of script, as the play is actually built on a series of character sketches in which we see many contemporary American types. The play’s conflict is seen through character and is obvious from the first few lines of Act I. Murray Burns has made his value judgments on American society and has found the latter to be far below his expectations. He is now attempting to live by his own eccentric rules and, at the same time, retain custody of his nephew, who is in the process of being removed from his home by the Bureau of Child Welfare. Into this theme of individuality versus structure is woven the familiar boy-meets-girl pattern. The entire play, consequently, depends on character and inter-character relationships. The play’s pure entertainment value was stressed, rather than any moral message which might have been present in the script. The play is funny, but there are definite deficiencies in the areas of plot development and the play’s philosophy. The purpose of the production was to present consistently a humorous, enjoyable evening of theater for the audiences and a beneficial learning situation for the actors, director, and production staff. After several casting difficulties and minor technical slow-downs, A Thousand Clowns enjoyed near capacity houses at P.S.C. and an extremely warm reception from the members of Oregon State Prison’s Upward Bound program. The show increased in effectiveness at each performance. Character came through to the audiences. Serious pace problems involving quick timing from beginning to end were solved. The actors did the work themselves. They improved their craft and learned and benefitted from this experience. From the director’s standpoint, the experience was enjoyable and profitable, provoking new ideas and calling upon new methods to work them out.

Graduate recitals and document : pulse, phrasing and pitch organization in Cinque variazioni by Luciano Berio

Wyber, Leslie Paulette 05 1900 (has links)
This document examines Luciano Berio's Cinque Voriationi for solo piano (1952-3, rev. 1966) from the perspective of a performer seeking to convey something of the organization of its musical material to a broad audience. Criteria for identifying elementary partitioning (pulse) and grouping (gesture, phrase segments, and phrases) are explored. In analysing relationships between phrases and phrase groups several things must be considered: specific pitch issues, distinctions between primary and auxiliary or accompanimental material, and contour. Throughout the document, suggestions are given for successful realization of fundamental grouping structures in performance. Although the piece has elements of serial construction, it is primarily underlying linear motion which gives sections cohesiveness. Also, certain pitch classes are given special emphasis and become vital reference points. The placement of and linear movement around these emphasized pitch classes create traditional tonal implications, to varying degrees throughout the work. Cinque Variationi is a set of variations for which no theme is provided, and it is far from obvious what is being varied. After examining the grouping structures of this piece, it becomes clear that variations refer to each other in unsystematic ways, and that pitch centers serve as reference points across variations.
