Critical Reaction to Serge Koussevitzky's Programming of Contemporary Music with the Boston Symphony Orchestra 1924-1929

Morgan, Richard S. (Richard Sanborn) 08 1900 (has links)
Serge Koussevitzky, conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1924-1949, had, throughout his career, a reputation as a champion of modern music. The anticipation of his arrival in Boston in 1924 sparked a great deal of public debate about his reported modernism which the critics reflected and contributed to. This thesis analyzes the critical reaction, preserved in scrapbooks of newspaper clippings at Symphony Hall, Boston, to Koussevitzky's programming of contemporary music during his first five years with the BSO.

Spółka Nakładowa Młodych Kompozytorów Polskich (1905-1912) and the Myth of Young Poland in Music

Hebda, Paul Thomas 12 1900 (has links)
This study deals with the four-composer Polish musical association, Young Polish Composers' Publishing Company, which became commonly known as the group Poland in Music. Young Poland in Music is considered by Polish and non-Polish music historians to be the signal inaugurator of modernism in Polish music. However, despite this most important attribution, the past eighty-odd years have witnessed considerable confusion over the perceptions of: 1) exactly who constituted the publishing company, 2) why it was founded, 3) what the intentions of its members were, and 4) the general reception its members' music received. This paper addresses and resolves this multiple confusion. Chapter I presents an introductory survey of the political, socio/cultural, and musical developments of Poland between 1772 and c1900, the period of the Polish Partitions through the beginnings of the "Young Poland" era. Chapter II presents a discussion of the facts surrounding the founding of the publishing company, as well as a discussion of the eighty-odd years of historical misinterpretations that have developed about the composers' company and its relationship to "Young Poland in Music." Chapter III discusses the interpersonal relationships of the composers and other persons directly involved with them and their company, and the impact that these relationships had on the publishing company. Additionally, the chapter brings into focus the specific relationships between the musicologist, Adolf Chybiński, the company, and its individual members. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the actual publishing activities of the company. Chapter IV examines the three concerts sponsored by the company and their critical receptions in Warsaw and Berlin through the surviving reviews and comments of leading contemporary music critics, the concert participants, the composers' close colleagues, and the composers themselves. Finally, Chapter V contains a brief discussion of the music presented on the three concerts, characterizing the works within the context of their initial critical reception.

Fiction and the incompleteness of history: Toni Morrison, V.S. Naipaul, and Ben Okri. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2005 (has links)
Specifically, in her novel Beloved Morrison redefines the slave-narrative tradition and reveals the discredited history of slavery by unveiling the "interior life" of African American ancestors and rendering memories heretofore unacknowledged and unspoken in classic slave autobiographical narratives. Through a hybrid prose that mixes fiction with history in the novels The Enigma of Arrival and A Way in the World , Naipaul illuminates "areas of darkness" in the diasporic world of East Indian Trinidadian peoples and provides new ways of transforming the English literary and cultural history. Focusing on West African identity and community, especially the poorest and the most powerless, in the novel The Famished Road Okri brings a mythic and fantastic dimension to postcolonial fiction as a way of finding images to portray what the public media and the outside world fail to record and comprehend, and gives voice to people who are generally without power and almost without any place in a world of inequality and injustice. Probing into specific representations of incompleteness in the historical novels of Toni Morrison, V. S. Naipaul, and Ben Okri, this thesis underscores the indispensable role of fiction in representing life, rewriting history and enlarging reality. / With reference to Paul Ricoeur's conception of the interconnectedness between history and fiction, in particular his analyses in The Reality of the Historical Past, this comparative literary study examines narrative strategies that three contemporary writers of fiction---Toni Morrison, V. S. Naipaul, and Ben Okri---have devised to counteract incompleteness of historical representation. This thesis argues that history as a mode of rendering the past and a way of representing reality is essentially incomplete. In other words, history is incomplete as a systematic written account comprising a chronological record of past events, circumstances, and facts, and as a story or a narrative of events connected with a real or imaginary object or person. Fiction, however, with its underlying capacity to transform and transfigure reality, imagines as well as repatterns unrecognized or misrepresented aspects of individual and cultural histories. In their works of fiction, Morrison, Naipaul, and Okri purposefully address various kinds of historical negation, absence, and incompleteness. / Zhu Ying. / "May 2005." / Adviser: Timothy Weiss. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-01, Section: A, page: 0180. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2005. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 219-233). / Electronic reproduction. 'Ludic passage' : abstraction in post-war British literature, 1945-1980

Ferris, Natalie January 2016 (has links)
This thesis traces a line of literary experimentation in post-war British literature that was prompted by the aesthetic, philosophical and theoretical demands of abstraction. Spanning the period 1945 to 1980, it observes the ways in which certain aesthetic advancements initiated new forms of literary expression to posit a new genealogy of interdisciplinary practice in Britain. It is the first sustained chronological study to consider the ways in which a select number of British poets, authors and critics challenged the received views of their post-war moment in the discovery of the imaginative and idealizing potential of abstraction. At a time in which Britain became conscious of its evolving identity within an increasingly globalised context, this study accounts for the range of Continental and Transatlantic influences in order to more accurately locate the networks at play. Exploring the contributions made by individuals, such as Herbert Read, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Christine Brooke-Rose, as well as by groups of practitioners, such as the British concrete poetry movement, small press initiatives and Art & Language, this thesis offers a comprehensive account of the evolving status of abstraction across cultural, institutional and literary contexts. The discussions build a vision of an era that increasingly jettisons the predetermined critical lexicon of abstraction to generate works of a more pragmatic abstract inspiration: the spatial demands of concrete poetry, language as medium in the conceptual artwork, the absence of linear plot in the new novel.
