Atasu Topcuoglu, Reyhan 01 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)

It examines informal home-based work with an understanding based on two foci, which are market relations and traditional gender roles. It develops its own suggestions of conceptualisations, namely deliberate concealment and devalorisation by obscuring, building up these concepts abstractly in the theoretical sections and concretely the analyses.

The Ethos Of Architects Towards An Analysis Of Architectural Practice In Turkey

Fehim Kennedy, Nilgun 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
A certain architectural &quot / ethos&quot / come into being as a result of the specific training which architects receive as producers of space, of their dual status as artists and professionals, of the conditions in which they live and the social status of their profession. This ethos is a product of the architects&#039 / collective habitus. The attitudes of architects regarding their position in the building industry, their role in society and their self-image (or its lack of) as artists determine the transformation within the architectural profession under the impact of the changes in society. This study investigates architects&#039 / professional practice by focusing only on those architects working independently and mostly having their on offices. Thirty-one architects were grouped by age, gender, the faculties from which they graduated and province of residence and work. The international influence on architectural discourse, the effects of architects&#039 / organisations and their professional ideology were introduced as additional variables for investigating the nature of their habitus. The interviews revealed that the architects&#039 / &quot / spontaneous professional ideology&quot / (SPI) is the main adhesive of their collective habitus and ethos, and it force architects to think in a specific way about space, the sovereignty of architecture, its art component, its legitamacy, architects&#039 / devotion to their profession, their feelings of superiority over clients and users as well as their overall code of conduct.

Dynamics Of Youth Euroscepticism

Kucukural, Onder 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT Dynamics of Youth Euroscepticism K&uuml / &ccedil / &uuml / kural, &Ouml / nder M.Sc., Department of Sociology Supervisor: Dr. Mustafa Sen December 2005, 138 pages The aim of this thesis is to describe the dominant features of Euroscepticism in Turkish context and to understand its main dynamics with special reference to a particular group, the youth in Turkey. A field research was conducted in order to understand youth&rsquo / s EU support. The field research involved a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques in order to attain multi-layered perspectives on Euroscepticism. The research is representative at a country-scale and the participants were 4542 senior students of high schools in twelve cities of Turkey. One of the striking findings of the research was the high percentage of Euro-optimists when the survey was applied and the dominance of Eurosceptic discourse during one to one and group interviews. According to the research results two strands appear to be dominant in youth&rsquo / s Euroscepticism. The first is moral degeneration discourse that is articulated by a threat perception to Turkey&rsquo / s culture and lifestyle. The second one is nationalist discourse that is expressed by threat perception to the unity and integrity of the nation and the state. Considering the main motivation of the youth in their appropriation of these two discourses I argued that the identity theories provide plausible explanations for the understanding of this phenomenon. The identity is formed around the &ldquo / we&rdquo / concepts that are mainly derived from Turkish nationalism and culture. Besides, the Turkish state&rsquo / s founding principles and the atmosphere created during the 80&rsquo / s and onwards seems to contribute to this construction.

An interdisciplinary approach in understanding internet as a practice : a case study of internet cafes in a small town

Uzuner, Demet 01 November 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims at understanding how Internet being a particular technology, integrates into daily practices in a small town. By doing this, it follows a theoretically informed ethnography based research concluding that the relationship between technology and society cannot be grasped by analysing both as separate entities. Hence, it attempts to develop a theoretical and methodological framework that is constantly aware of problems raised by dualistic assumptions analysing technology-society or human-nonhuman as separate entities one impinging upon other. It is this awareness that led the study to apply Bourdieu&rsquo / s concept of habitus and Latour&rsquo / s concept of actant into its field of inquiry. These two notions promote an understanding that takes into account the contingency of practices and provides researchers with the analytical means to comprehend technologies within the contexts of their &ldquo / use&rdquo / . It is also denoted by the findings of the study that a particular &lsquo / technology&rsquo / does not create a &lsquo / social impact&rsquo / but as itself being social, it allows this already occurring practice to find an avenue for its expression.

Sacrifice at Ugarit

Urie, Donald McKellar Leitch January 1944 (has links)
The purpose of the present enquiry is to give an account of the sacrificial system revealed in these texts. The institution of sacrifice is only one of the many aspects of Semitic religion on which the texts shed much light. A cursory examination of the texts makes it clear that both in the mythological and ritual texts sacrifice occupies a prominent position. It is obviously a complex and highly developed institution with a large specialised vocabulary. Our purpose is to attempt a description of the institution of sacrifice as it is portrayed in the texts – its rites, its significance, and the relation in which it stands to the other Semitic systems of sacrifice, particularly that of the Israelites. Previously little was known positively about the sacrificial system of the Canaanites. It was deduced that it must have borne a general resemblance to that of the other Semitic peoples. How we have abundant first-hand evidence about the Canaanite sacrificial system. Much of the evidence is still obscure, but a great deal admits of no doubt, and its value for comparative Semitic religion can hardly be over-emphasised.

A unificação da Síria e o jihād de Nūr ad-Dīn na crônica Kitāb al-Kāmil fi l-ta\'rīkh, de Ibn al-Athīr / The Syrian unification and the Nūr ad-Dīn jihād in Ibn al-Athīr\'s chronicle, Kitāb al-Kāmil fi l-ta\'rīkh

Emily Fonseca de Souza 31 August 2016 (has links)
In our dissertation, we study the extract of Ibn al-Athīr\'s chronicle, Kitāb al-Kāmil fi l-ta\'rīkh, reporting the years of Nūr ad-Dīn\'s governmet.
