Stereoskopie a kameraman / Stereoscopy and the Cinematographer

The thesis is a study of stereoscopy from a cinematographer's point of view. It views stereoscopy in it's entire spectrum of today's use - from rides in theme parks, over commercial narrative films, to documentaries with a cultural value. It briefly takes a look at the early theories of binoculars, the early stages of stereoscopy discovery and stereophotography. Next it briefly focuses on the history of stereoscopy in cinema from its beginning, to it's renaissance in the 1950's up to today. Thereafter the thesis continues with a description of the principles of depth perception, with keywords like disparity, parallax, convergence and accommodation. It mentions the importance of non-stereoscopic depth cues to the process of stereopsis. The next part concentrates on the stereoscopic window, which is analogical to the frame and it's borders in conventional cinema. It investigates the screen size, the distance limit of the far plane and stereoscopic window violation. It continues in breaking down the stereoscopic image and factors that influence the size perception of objects and figures in it's space, as well as analyzing the perception of the whole image depending on the viewer's position to the screen. Attention is given to a special case of stereoscopy - orthostereoscopy. Depth bracket, native parallax and terms such as stereo comfort zone, depth budget and depth bracket are defined to create an understanding of the importance of the concept of the depth chart. The aesthetics of depth is demonstrated on a few recent stereoscopic films. A general overview of equipment for stereoscopy follows - rigs, 3D monitors and software. The thesis continues in discussing the tools of the cinematographer divided into two groups - non-stereoscopic and stereoscopic. The non-stereoscopic are linear and colour perspective, atmosphere blur, focus and camera movement. While the stereoscopic tools are interaxial distance and convergence. The cases of hypostereoscopy and hyperstereoscopy are understood as tools of the trade as well. The next chapter is dedicated to the specifics and limitations of stereoscopic imaging - the necessity of perfect pairing of cameras, lenses, the specifics of framing for stereoscopy, issues related to the mirror in the rigs, lighting and use of optical camera filters. The next part of the thesis briefly covers related topics that have an impact on the image as well. Namely set design, post-production, with stress on colour grading, and various stereoscopic projection systems, including autostereoscopy. The last part of the thesis is an interview with cinematographer Andrew Lesnie, ACS, ASC who shares his experience on shooting the Hobbit. The conclusion is a reflection on the question, if stereoscopy is a tool and it also tries to estimate the future of stereoscopy in film and television.

Development of Process Models for Multiphase Processes in the Pore Space of a Filter Cake based on 3D Information

Reliable information about the micro-processes during filtration and dewatering of filter cakes allows more accurate statements about process development and design in any industrial application with solid-liquid separation units. Distributed particle properties such as shape, size, and material influence the formation of the porous network structure, which can show considerable local fluctuations in vertical and horizontal alignment in the cake forming apparatus. The present work relates to a wide range of particle sizes and particle shapes and presents their effects on integral, but preferably local, structural parameters of cake filtration. Current models for the relationship between particle properties and resulting porous structure remain inaccurate. Therefore, the central question focus on the model-based correlation between obtained tomographic 3D information and characteristic cake and process parameters. In combination with X-ray computed tomography and microscopy (ZEISS Xradia 510), data acquisition of the structural build-up of filter cakes is possible on a small scale (filter area 0.2 cm²) and a conventional laboratory scale (filter area 20 cm², VDI 2762 pressure nutsch). Thereby, the work focuses on structural parameters at the local level before, during, and after cake dewatering, such as porosity, coordination number, three-phase contact angle, characteristics of pores and isolated liquid regions, the liquid load of individual particles, tortuosity, and capillary length, and the corresponding spatial distributions. Seven different particle systems in the range of 20 and 500 µm, suspended in aqueous solutions with additives for contrast enhancement, served as raw materials for the filter cake formation. Image data processing from 16-bit greyscale images with a resolution of 2 to 4 µm/voxel edge length includes various operations with a two-stage segmentation to identify air, solid particles, and liquid phase, resulting in a machine learning-based automated approach. Subsequent modeling and correlation of measured parameters rely on experimentally verified quantities from mercury porosimetry, laser diffraction, dynamic image analysis, static and dynamic droplet contour analysis, as well as filtration and capillary pressure tests according to VDI guidelines. The tomography measurements provide microscopic information about the porous system, quantified using characteristic key parameters and distribution functions. By studying the cake structure concerning the local distribution of particle size and shape and the resulting porosity, segregation effects can be avoided by increasing the feed concentration of particles, whereby swarm inhibition of particles in the initial suspension strongly hinders or completely suppresses layer formation in the cake according to distributed particle properties (Publication A). In the subsequent dewatering of the filter cake to the irreducible saturation, the measurement of the local coordination number as well as the remaining liquid volumes at the particle contacts allows the determination of a discrete liquid load distribution by correlation with the respective particle volume (Publication B). The determination of the capillary length - shortest capillary for single-phase pore flow and capillary of least resistance for multiphase pore flow - provides modeling approaches for the cake formation from publication A as well as the dewatering process from publication B (Publication C). The parameter sets obtained also help to transfer and extend existing, theoretical models of multiphase pore flow to the application example of filter cake dewatering (Publication D). Die Schriftenreihe informiert über die Ergebnisse der experimentellen Entwicklung eines automatischen 3D-Bildanalysesystems zur Vermessung von Milchkühen und dessen Vernetzung mit dem Herdenmanagementprogramm, um den Milcherzeuger bei dessen Entscheidungen zu unterstützen. Im Rahmen des Verbundprojektes konnten wertvolle Erkenntnisse zu Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von 3D-Bildanalyseverfahren im Milchviehhaltungsbereich festgehalten und Lösungen für detektierte Problemstellungen gefunden werden. Durch die sichere, regelmäßige und objektive Erhebung von 3D-Daten wurde es möglich, in Form von Trendauswertungen die Entwicklung der Körperkondition darzustellen, Körpermaße stressfrei zu erheben und Ansätze für eine Gangbildanalyse zu entwickeln. Maßgeblich für den Erfolg von 3D-Bildanalyse-Verfahren in der Milchviehhaltung ist die Anbindung an eine Tiererkennung, die sich in ihrer aktuellen Struktur in Form von Insellösungen als größte Herausforderung darstellte.
