Metadiscursive interaction in research articles : a case of Indonesian scholars writing in Bahasa Indonesia and English

Suratno, Antonius January 2012 (has links)
This study presents an analysis of research articles (RAs) written in English (Eng) and Bahasa Indonesia (BI) by 6 Indonesian scholar writers, each contributing 5 RAs in Eng and 5 RAs in BI. The rhetorical features of these 60 pre-published RAs which represent 6 different disciplines (Ecology, Cultural Studies, Applied Linguistics, Economics, Medicine, and Literature) were examined to reveal metadiscursive interaction using the interpersonal metadiscourse (IMD) taxonomy of Crismore et al. (1993) and self-mentions adapting Hyland's (2002c) and Harwood's (2005) models to find out: if writers differ in their deployment of interpersonal metadiscourse and self-mentions across BI and Eng; if differences of education, disciplines and publication experiences influence authors' deployment ) of these elements in the writing of RAs in BI and Eng; and if their understanding I of discourse community and interaction effect their strategies in the writing of RAs in BI and Eng. Using mixed techniques of quantitative and qualitative analysis, the results show that metadiscursive interaction in Eng RAs is significantly different from that of BI RAs with varying patterns across disciplines under study. As regards self-mentions, despite variations in the patterns and frequency of use, the eo-text analyses indicate similar discourse functions in that writers project themselves into their discourse to signal their attempt to engage in the unfolding texts and involve the readers into the propositional content of the texts. The findings indicate high levels of contextualisation in writers' efforts to interact with readers and these appear to place high regard on the values embedded in disciplinary culture which reaffirm a previous finding by Hyland (2004), typifying the dynamic nature and fluidity of the genre of an RA, besides also showing each individual's writing style. Combined together, IMD and self-mentions revealed that metadiscursive interaction is a matter of degree of intensity and explicitness, as a result of the inherent disciplinary culture that has sanctioned each discourse community's members.

曲面結び目のカンドルコサイクル不変量の多重化公式

成瀬, 透 23 March 2015 (has links)
A surface knot is the image of a smooth embedding of a connected closed surface in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. A framing of a surface knot is a section of the unit normal bundle of the surface knot. The n-parallel of a framed surface knot is the union of n parallel copies of the surface knot obtained by pushing it along the framing. In this paper, we show that the quandle cocycle invariant using a finite quandle X of the n-parallel of a framed surface knot can be presented by the rack cocycle invariants using finitely many racks which are determined by X (independently of n) of the framed surface knot (Theorem 4.5). In particular, when X is the dihedral quandle R_p of order of odd prime p, we show that the R_p coloring number of the n-parallel of a framed surface knot F can be presented in terms of the R_p coloring number of F and the divisibility of the framing of F in the first cohomology group of F (Theorem 4.6 (1)), where we naturally identify the set of framings of F and the first cohomology group of F (Proposition 3.7). Further, for the Mochizuki 3-cocycle of R_p, we show that the quandle cocycle invariant of the n-parallel of a framed surface knot F for odd n can be presented in terms of the quandle cocycle invariant of F and the divisibility of the framing of F (Theorem 4.6 (2)). Further, when X is the tetrahedral quandle Q_4, we show that the Q_4 coloring number of the n-parallel of a framed surface knot F can be presented in terms of the coloring numbers of F for Q_4 and a certain rack determined by Q_4 and the divisibility of the framing of F (Theorem 4.15). In order to show the above results, we develop a method to describe framed surface knots in terms of their diagrams. We present a framed surface knot by a surface knot diagram with arcs written on it, and show that two framed surface knots are isotopic if and only if their diagrams with arcs are related by certain moves (Theorem 3.6), which is a generalization of a theorem of Roseman for usual surface knot diagrams. Further, we introduce the rack cocycle invariants of framed surface knots, and show its isotopy invariance by using Theorem 3.6 (Theorem 3.11). / Kyoto University (京都大学) / 0048 / 修士 / 修士(理学)

Women in nineteenth-century creative partnerships : the 'significant other'

Rose, Lucy Ella January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of women in artistic and literary professions, the representation of women in art and literature, and the rise of feminism through these discourses by re-viewing the lives and works of three historically neglected nineteenth-century female figures: Christina Rossetti, Mary Watts and Evelyn De Morgan. It aims to show how these pioneering professional women writers and artists achieved and promoted greater female empowerment and liberation through their creative practices and familial or conjugal creative partnerships. Challenging longstanding perceptions of these female figures as stifled, submissive or subordinate gender ‘Others’, I aim to show how their formation of creative partnerships with artistic men – namely, Gabriel Rossetti, George Watts and William De Morgan – can be seen as career-enabling and self-empowering strategies. This thesis thus identifies structures previously interpreted as straightforwardly patriarchal – that is, Victorian male/female conjugal and familial relations – as sites of creative female agency. It also focuses on moments of protest or struggle in the female figures’ partnerships and works in order to trace the development of their creative identities and feminist voices, offering a more nuanced understanding of power relations between the sexes as well as of the relationship between feminism, art and literature in the period. An analysis of previously unexplored, unpublished archival material and understudied works by these figures in relation to twentieth-century feminist and gender theory shows how they engaged with and contributed to early – as well as prefigured later – feminist discourse. In particular, I explore the ways in which their literary and visual texts can be seen to embody Hélène Cixous’s concept of écriture féminine, revealing the subversive elements of ostensibly conventional works. This thesis thus offers alternative visions of these female figures as ‘significant others’ who were active and influential in their partnerships as well as in contemporary women-centred debates.
