Increasing Stroke Knowledge Among Fifth Graders Using an Educational School-Based Intervention

BACKGROUND: In America, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death taking more than 130,000 people every year. Early recognition is imperative as survival increases with prompt intervention. Unfortunately, many Americans including children do not know the acute signs and symptoms of stroke, especially those in high-risk communities. Due to the significance surrounding the public health burden of stroke, the purpose of this project is to evaluate a time efficient, mobile device supported stroke education program for fifth graders and their parents who live in a multi-ethnic community. DESIGN: This DNP project implemented a prospective descriptive study. SETTING: The study took place at a local public elementary school in Phoenix, Arizona within a multiethnic community with predominately Hispanic children. DATA COLLECTION: The data was collected in the form of pre and post-tests from the fifth-grade students. Surveys were also given to parents and the teacher. RESULTS: Results from 19 students indicated fifth graders can learn about stroke, recognize the early warning signs, and seek help fast. Data from parental surveys indicated students talked to their parents about what they learned and shared the stroke phone app with them. The study also found a positive teacher perception of incorporating technology-supported stroke lesson into fifth-grade curriculum. CONCLUSION: This study found increasing stroke knowledge among fifth graders using a novel mobile technology supported school-based intervention is possible and, in fact, found students shared the information and stroke application with their parents and families at home. Findings also support the need for continual research on educating today’s youth, targeting high-risk populations, and further fine-tuning this sustainable stroke knowledge program for middle schools across Arizona.

The role of sensation seeking in children's ability to learn alcohol expectancy associations

Sensation seeking is a personality characteristic associated with problematic alcohol use and positive alcohol expectancies, but little research has examined the relationship between sensation seeking and the acquisition of alcohol expectancy information. In a recent study (Steinberg, 2003), sensation seeking was associated with how quickly and accurately college-aged students were able to learn alcohol-expectancy word pairs in a paired associate learning task. In this age group, however, the individuals had fully developed alcohol expectancies that may have influenced their rates of learning. The current study sought to minimize the influence of previously held alcohol expectancies by exploring this relationship in children when the development of alcohol expectancies is just beginning. The participants in this study were fifth grade students. A series of regressions examined the relationship between sensation seeking, alcohol expectancies, current and predicted future drinking with the acquisition of alcohol and expectancy word pairs in a paired associate learning task. Although no statistically significant relationships were found, children with higher drinking frequency and males with higher Thrill and Adventure Seeking (TAS) demonstrated a minor advantage in their ability to match alcohol and expectancy words in cued-recall trials. Although the results of this study are inconclusive, they suggest that sensation seeking may play a role in the acquisition of alcohol expectancies. Future research with refined word pairs and a larger sample size is necessary to further clarify these trends.

The diploma thesis called "Regional Education of the Local Region Taught at the Lower Grade of Elementary School (Based On the Example of ORP Prachatice)" deals with the problems of teaching about local region in the subject of Geography taught at the lower grade of elementary school. The theoretical part koncerns the geographical characteristics of the region and the place of the thesis among the curriculum. The second part consists of the didactical material aimds to 4th and 5th graders of the elementary school in the region of Prachatice. The material has its grounds in the information collected in the theoretical part. The didactical material is supplemented with worksheets and didactic guide for teachers. The practical part is based on the present Framework Educational Pragramme for Elementary Education.
