The significance of place in the prose writings of Hervé BazinHallam, Diana January 2004 (has links)
Manuscript evidence from the Archives Municipales in Nancy provides insights into the way in which Bazin used his settings to create verisimilitude and structure. His use of place is also significant from a thematic point of view. His experiences at his childhood home, Le Pâtys, seem to have been particularly formative, inspiring the Rezeau trilogy. Throughout his writing career, Bazin would re-examine his most dominant place-based concerns in a variety of fictional contexts.;Bazin analysed the way in which some individuals identified themselves strongly with their homes, drawing their sense of identity and continuity from their environment. However, he was also interested in the effect of exile on such rooted people whose close relationship with a specific place was broken or interrupted.;Bazin's portrayal of interpersonal relationships also led to important place-based themes. He showed the tendency of individuals to turn their homes into personal fiefdoms or territories at the expense of others. He also considered the phenomenon of running away from home, examining the motives of those who took flight. Bazin's novels assert the particularly close association between women and the home but also seen to question the ability of men and women to live harmoniously under the same roof.;The outdoors tends to provide places of retreat for Bazin's characters and his novels suggest that the beauty and complexity of the natural world is a source of solace of life. Indeed, Bazin's affection for the natural environment seems to have inspired much of the more philosophical writing of his later years in which he considers man's role and responsibilities in relation to the uniqueness of his planet.;Overall, by means of his novels and his non-fictional writing, Bazin affirms the importance of place in determining man's identity, relationships and ultimate significance.

Beyond melancholia : Algeria and its spectresBrisley, Lucy Anne January 2013 (has links)
This thesis problematizes the recent transdisciplinary turn to melancholia by grounding the concept within the literature of three contemporary Algerian authors: Assia Djebar, Yasmina Khadra, and Boualem Sansal. If Freud figured melancholia as a pathological response to loss, much recent scholarship has reconceptualized it as an ethico-political model of remembrance that safeguards the memory of the lost or marginalized other. Yet the recent and ubiquitous depathologization of melancholia is only possible insofar as theorists overlook its more insidious elements. By analyzing how melancholia emerges within the postcolonial novels of Djebar, Khadra, and Sansal, this thesis reveals how melancholia in fact undermines an ethico-politics of remembrance, further displacing those lost others that theorists of melancholia would recuperate. Divided into two sections, the first part of the thesis thus challenges the ethico-political viability of melancholia as a mnemonic model. Through close readings of the texts, the first four chapters reveal postcolonial melancholia in Algeria to be imbricated in amnesia, immobility, repetition, victimhood, apolitical retrospection, and the unethical appropriation of the lost object. Part II investigates how the authors imagine different models of remembrance that move beyond the limits of the mourning and melancholia dyad. If melancholia has been depathologized, it nonetheless remains ensnared within a binary system in which the subject either forgets (mourns) or engages in a putative act of hyper-remembrance (melancholia). Building upon the recent theory of Dominick LaCapra, Mireille Rosello, and Judith Butler, the final two chapters explore the critical potential of ‘working upon’ the past. As an on-going and conscious model of remembrance, ‘working upon’ actively resists the closure inherent to mourning but it also circumvents the melancholic (re)appropriation of the past and its lost others. Ultimately, then, this thesis signals the need for emergent models of memorialization that move beyond the restrictions of the Freudian binary of mourning and melancholia.

Observer of the daily Cameroonian realities, Calixthe Beyala published, in 1987, a novel entitled C’est le soleil qui m’a brûlée. In this novel, she shows the reader how a woman, victim of tradition, uses her body as means to reconquer herself and to find her freedom. In 1994, she wrote and published Assèze, l’Africane. And in 2003, she published Femme nue, femme noire.
After a careful reading of the three novels, the reader can easily discover that Calixthe Beyala places woman in the center of her literary preoccupation. And she examines, in her fiction, two themes, tradition and modernity. What does she mean by tradition and modernity? How does she examine these two themes in the novels of our study? What solutions does she propose to the woman, firstly, to liberate herself from the yoke of tradition and male’s domination, and secondly, to reconquer her body, herself and her emancipation? / Classics and World Languages / M.A. (French)

Seydou Badian, inveterate observant of the daily realities of his native milieu published in 1957 a novel called Sous l’Orage. Marcel Khombe Mangwanda, eyewitness of his native terrirory daily events, mostly those of the professional milieu, on his side, published in 2008 a book called Le Porte-parole du président.
After a careful reading of the two novels, we can notice that the two African writers have carefully scrutinized a common theme in their literary work, conflict of generations.
What do they mean by conflict of generations? How do they understand and exploit this theme in their respective novels? Which solutions do they propose to old people and to the youths on one hand, to leaders on power and to the people on the other hand, to eradicate the conflict which is in Africa, not only an obstacle to individual blossoming, but also an obstruction for the development of the society, of the country and of the African continent? / Classics & World Languages / M.A. (French)
