Andúgar Martínez, Lourdes 04 February 2016 (has links)
This thesis includes the analysis of the faunal remains of two settlements from the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula: Gatas (Turre, Almería) and La Bastida (Totana, Murcia). The results of this analysis extend the current information related to livestock model at argaric society (ca. 2200-1550 ANE). This work starts with a brief introduction to the historical problems of the management of animals in the Copper Age and the Bronze Age circumscribed to peninsular southeast. It follows a detailed explanation of the methodology used in this archaeozoological analysis specifying the procedures and criteria that have been followed and the parameters considered in the taphonomic analysis of the samples studied. Thanks to this analysis, it has been possible to guarantee the validity of the data analyzed. There follows a briefly presentation of the settlements from where come the faunal remains analyzed. It includes a section about the history of the research of the sites, a second part dedicated to their chronology and a final part in which are explained the contexts from where the remains come. There is a description of the composition of both samples showing the frequencies of representation of the remains of each species by three quantification units: the NR, NMI and the weight of the remains. It has been also possible to determine the productive strategies based on the composition of the sacrificed animal population. This has led to the identification of a specific level difference in relation to dairy, meat and wool production and traction. This work also provides information related to the health conditions of animal populations in Gatas and La Bastida, representing a direct indicator of their living conditions in contexts of animal exploitation. In this thesis issues concerning the obtainment and consumption of food of animal origin have been discussed as well. It has been pointed out the practices followed in the butchery and preparation of food. In order to do this, the skeletal variability of each species, anthropic cut marks on bone surfaces and patterns of fracture of portions and skeletal elements have been analyzed. It has been possible to define and compare between both samples the processing patterns of the animals, food preparation and anthropic cooking marks documented in the bones. Finally, it has been compared the specific representation of the samples of Gatas and La Bastida with other contemporary sites of the Copper Age and the Bronze Age from the peninsular Southeast , in order to contextualize them spatially and chronologically.

Le tombe di giganti di Is Lapideddas (Gonnosnò-OR). Archeologia della morte di una comunità nuragica

Pische, Alessandra 02 February 2016 (has links)
This doctoral thesis analyzes the four giants tombs of Is Lapideddas (Gonnosnò-OR) and combines two different types of studies: archeology and anthropology. The burials are date back to the Bronze Age according to radiocarbon dating (1391-1228 cal BC); they are located in an area where other burial structures (as pit-graves) are used for primary and secondary inhumation. The review of anthropological studies in Italy, and primarily, in Sardinia, highlights the use of anthropometry and morphometry to describe the ancient history of an area and its population. Data on anthropological studies from the Bronze Age in Sardinia relate in particular to diagnostic bones (such as the skull and long bones) and neglect the overall analysis of bone specimens and the grave goods within: this has led to the general acceptance of morphometric and morphologic characteristics as the fundamental basis for recognition of a particular social group. The next review of the archaeological contexts of the Bronze Age has allowed us to capture the unique aspects and chronological phases of one of the most articulate periods of the recent prehistory of Sardinia. The analysis focuses mainly on contexts clearly indicating stratigraphies and, through the sole use of material indicators, we observe the development of the different periods according to elements of continuity and change highlighted in each step. The chronological analysis and, in particular, the use of absolute chronology, is crucial for the correct chronology of the development of "Nuragic civilization". The application of new methods of investigation (such as the sum of the probabilities and Bayesian statistics) is essential in the review of radiocarbon datings of the Bronze Age and allow a better understanding of the formation and development of the reporting period. The understanding of a Nuragic community like the one buried in Is Lapideddas graves cannot ignore the analysis of archaeological and natural environments that deeply characterize the island. In relation to the funeral manifestations, particular emphasis is given to the giants tombs that appear, like “nuraghi”, the most representative monument of the "Nuragic civilization". The analysis of Is Lapideddas graves, from an architectural point of view, reveals the importance of these buildings to social and religious relations. The analysis of human bone remains is fundamental to the understanding of social groups buried here. The findings have a varied degree of preservation reflecting the damage suffered by the graves over time. Only from the bone remains of Tomb 4 has it been possible to define the mode of deposition of the deceased in the burial chamber, which was done mainly using primary inhumation. The presence of pit-graves for secondary deposition (one of which also dated to the Bronze Age: 1380-1276 cal BC) appears indicative of the periodic emptying of the graves for new burials. The study of human bone remains of the four graves focuses primarily on the basic aspects of the reconstruction of paleo-demographic analysis such as the Minimum Number of Individuals, sex and age at death estimation of the population buried. These aspects are fundamental to the understanding of their use and the rituals practiced there. The analysis shows, always with particular reference to the Tomb 4, the presence of all biological categories and highlights how the burial was used for members of the community without exception: the presence of fetuses and newborn individuals emphasize the inclusion of individuals despite their age. Regarding sex, the preponderance of females may be related to problems due to pregnancy, childbirth or the mobility of the population (especially males) for different reasons such as transhumance, trade, etc. The last part takes into account osteometric data, epigenetic characters and the paleopathology aspects.

Pocostales Plaza, Luciana 05 February 2016 (has links)
The fresco technique, executed with lime putty as conglomerating material, has been used since thousands of years ago. However, the crystallographic and physico-chemical processes which make the fresco painting possible have been described in a general way, as part of the carbonation process of the intonaco itself. When approaching the technique from the point of view of the painter-stucco plasterer, it has been observed that the evolution of the superficial film of the fresco painting during the hours of the execution period (period of 0-20 hours, approximately) does not correspond to the evolution of the stratums which form the intonaco: its texture, stiffness and compactness are specific. The reason for this thesis is to investigate the formation and development of this superficial film. For this purpose, I have turned to the characterization of antique fresco paintings from the roman and romanesque periods, and I have compared them with experimental test tubes of fresco. Thanks to this process, it has been observed the presence of a film of geliform appearance in the whole of the characterized paintings, both in the antique paintings and in the experimental test tubes. For the characterization and the formation study, as well as the evolution of this geliform film, a set of fresco experimental test tubes have been realized, and have been thoroughly studied during a time range of 0-24 hours. Moreover, samples of days, months and years have been included, with the aim of assessing the evolution of this film through time. The characterization and the observation of this film have been carried out by means of different analytical techniques: POM (Petrographic Optic Microscope), count and measurement of particles through the treatment of images by means of the program IMAGEJ, SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy with atomical X-ray Spectroscopy) and FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). Please note that, for the development of this investigation, the system of detachment and vacuum forming of samples has been optimized. This optimization has been considered a novelty and has led to the securing of a process patent. This optimization has enabled the observation in detail of the morphological and crystallographical evolution of the pictorical film. The conclusions show that, over the surface of an intonaco/intonachino painted as a fresco, it can be seen the development of an amorphous gel composed by calcium carbonate. Below this gel, there is an interface on which specific crystalline growths are developed and evolved. These are generated in supersaturated conditions, conditions that accelerate de speed of growing promoting split growth phenomena. Thanks to the fast evaporation of the aqueous film –water and pigment-.Below this interface, the intonaco/intonachino surface can be found, that contribute with particles that convert quickly the composition and evolution of the film as to be gradually transformed in a colloidal dispersion. The description and evolution of this gel-film has consequences on the field of investigation of fresco painting, the investigation of lime putty as a conglomerating material, as well as the the preservation and restauration methodologies of fresco paintings and lime-based wall paintings.

Heras Mora, Francisco Javier 10 December 2015 (has links)
The Republican period in the Extremadura region (southwest of Spain) has been raised from the historiographical perspective, as a transitional stage –between protohistory and the Roman world. The starting point was the Roman peoples -lusitanians, vetones, túrdulos and naturally celtics-. They were walking towards urban social model, until the changes precipitated by the arrival of the Romans. A biased and uncritical reading of archaeological evidence could confirm these theses; however, it remained to explain certain physical evidence hardly understandable in the context of local societies by simple contact with Rome during the last two centuries before the Era. The objective of the research is to define the terms of the Roman presence in this territory, specifying the military impact in the archaeological record in those early days. Also we want to weigh the relevance of the reasons which led the expansion of Rome. To achieve this aim, we have done a synthesis and characterization of the Republican period in the archaeological sites of the region. It pays special attention to the material component of its registration and the signs of change in the stratigraphy of each site and building techniques. After a review of the geography of the remains related with the mineral resources and the monetary, we were able to elaborate an analysis of the identity dimension of registration. It seeks to identify the foreign component through the presence of certain items previously defined, related logistics and activity of the Roman army. Also we want to clarify the chronological terms, in order to achieve a proper fit of the physical evidence in the historical context of the Roman expansion. To do this, it will emphasize the dates and especially in comparison with other materials repertoires reference sets. The result of this research allows us to stablish a very close relationship between the Republican occupation of the sites and the footprint of the Roman army. In short, it shows a very prominent interest of Rome for mineral resources, especially in silver and lead, as it is reflected in the military trail in the mining.

Espai domèstic i cultura material.

Cortés Elía, María del Agua 29 April 2016 (has links)
The work is fruit of the research that carried out in the county of the Berguedà (Catalan Pyrenees), a study of the space where lives in the rural houses and in the homesteads, of the internal structure of the space where has developed the life and the familiar relations, of the elements furnish that they have formed, these spaces and the relations with the uses that of them did his inhabitants. The study treats the house as a aggregate, but mainly has centred in the living internal space of the family and of the elements that find in each one of these spaces and that it identifies them. The work have analysed the spaces where developed the familiar life (the common spaces: entry, room, cooking, fire to land, the gone out...., the private spaces: bedrooms, oratory, ....) And others in those that carried out the economic activities of survival (the zones of work: stables, mixer and oven, workshop; the zones of storage: cellar, pantry, granaries,....), and the elements to each space that identify the activity. The primary aim has been to document the inner space of the rural houses before different elements cause that these change or disappear definitively. Therefore it has realised an exhaustive inventory of houses and spaces that has allowed to have of a corpus descriptive of objects and of structural elements to shed light on the modifications that have given along the life of the house and the reasons of these since the Middle Age until starts of the 20th century. The work has leaned with the analysis of historical documentation and of iconographic and photographic elements, that help us to describe the historical evolution of the spaces and the elements. The geographic condition of the territory worked provides us a differentiation between the houses of the two geographic zones of the territory with economic systems very specific: the agricultural houses of the flat, and the livestock of mountain. The study of the spaces brings implicit to reach conclusions of the relation between spaces and users with different readings of social type, historical, symbolic and economic of the domestic space from structural descriptors, morphological and material related with the material culture and his relation with the space. In this work I want to suggest some criteria that offer a reflection on the organisation of the space to the farms, show that the study of the inner space of the houses provides us information as important how what rotted extract of the research from an archaeological site, since can follow track the historical information from the systemic context of each one of the spaces and of the objects associated. The fast disappearance of the organisation of the rural domestic space, that has kept till lately time with few modifications since finals of the Middle age, caused this study that gives us information of how the rural economic system conditioned a specific structure of the living spaces of the house with historical concrete variables and geographic, giving as a result a typological study of spaces, structural and characteristic elements constructive in what architecture, archaeology and ethnology go hand in hand.

Arroyo Ureña, Adrián 18 December 2015 (has links)
Over the last decades there have been numerous research studies focusing on different aspects of lower Pleistocene archaeological sites in east Africa, which have generated a huge amount of data about the stone tool knapping abilities of early hominins, as well as the general characteristics of the collections. In addition, at various sites it has been determined that hominins were fracturing bones to access marrow and also cracking open nuts. In this research sphere, analyses of the lithic assemblages of sites such as Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania) have identified stone tools with percussive marks on their surfaces, expanding the hypothesis that pounding activities were an important part of hominin behavioural repertoires during the Early Stone Age. This thesis focuses on the identification and analysis of stone tools that could have been involved in pounding activities, at sites from West Turkana (Kenya) and Olduvai (Tanzania) that cover a chronological period between 2.3 and 1.5 my. The main goal was to determine which tool types were possibly involved in pounding activities, and to assess the significance of these implements at two sites broadly contemporaneous sites located in different geographical areas. The analysis of archaeological materials presented is based on observations drawn from a reference collection of experimentally-used stone tools generated as part of an experimental program including both modern human and chimpanzees participants. Applying to these tools a methodology combining techno-typological study, low magnification (<100x) microscopic analysis and the spatial distribution of use-wear traces using GIS techniques enables the characterisation and recognition of distribution patterns of percussive marks on stone tools used on different activities: bone breaking, meat tenderizing, plant processing, nut cracking and bipolar knapping. With ethological studies demonstrating that various extant primates species use stone tools to crack open nuts, it is significant that the integrative methodology harnessed here includes the comparison of Pleistocene archaeological assemblages with pounding tools resulting from primate activities in order to assess differences and similarities between their morphologies, use-wear trace characteristics, and particular processes leading to their formation. The results obtained highlight that use-wear trace signatures have different distributions on the working surfaces of pounding tools that vary according to the activity undertaken. In addition, the formation of percussive traces is constrained by a range of factors such as raw material types, duration of use, and the contact material that is processed. This thesis shows the differences between the pounding tools from West Turkana and Olduvai not only in absolute terms but also in the diversity of tools. Fundamentally; the analysis of archaeological and chimpanzee stone assemblages allow us to define the characteristics that will enable the identification of percussive tools in the archaeological record, as well as the importance of this tool class within lower Pleistocene lithic assemblages.

Puche Fontanilles, Josep M. 11 January 2016 (has links)
Archaeology as a scientific area follows this unchangeable law. It is obvious to state that archaeological work in our time is largely unlike 100 years ago. It is likewise apparent that difficulties considered and epistemological bases are different. An early-XXI century archaeologist drastically differs from a colleague from the middle XX century. We are amply entitled to state that tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis. Yet, within this incessant change we can discern a relic. An element has stayed steady, without substantial change. Namely, the drawing of architectonic antiques. This is a paradox. One of the essential topics in archaeology, particularly of that devoted to ancient architecture, has remained unaware of the changes underwent by archaeological practice. Thus, an archaeological draughtsman from the XXI century hardly distinguishes from one from the early XX century. Indeed, novel instrumentation and equipment are employed nowadays, but the concept behind has remained essentially unaffected. Therefore, regarding archaeological structural drawing, a new Latin expression should be conceived: omnia mutantur, nos non et mutamur in illis. It can be easily observed that the epistemological consideration of archaeological drawing has been historically postponed ad calendas graecas. A deep and critical reflection on the reasons why drawing is actually needed, on the definition of archaeological drawing itself, and on its purposes has not been contemplated. Nor has there been a well-defined idea of which expression mechanisms should be implemented in order to achieve the expressive objectives of archaeological drawing, either. These deficiencies coincide presently at an historical moment in which the development and implementation of novel massive data acquisition (MDA) technologies are challenging the traditional documentation and graphical representation. In order to cope with and to overcome these challenges, this Thesis considers in the first place the definition of archaeological drawing, with the purpose of establishing its restrictions and the background in which it should be situated. This is linked directly to the parameters of general graphical representation. Archaeological drawing is, first of all, drawing, and hence it is not possible to make a reflection on this topic without determining the intrinsic nature of graphical representation. And it is drawing on the basis that it allows the reproduction, the analysis, the comprehension, and the explanation of reality. The third aspect considered in this work is that of the draughtsman’s role and training. The present role, desirable training and abilities that should constitute the background of the person who must generate this graphical documentation are also analysed herein. Once defined the draughtsman’s role, the available tools are considered, and a reflection is done on the implementation of novel technologies, their benefits and drawbacks, and above all the future challenges to be met. An epistemological discussion at this revolutionary historical moment is introduced on this topic. In order to look into the future, it is absolutely necessary to sketch the historical development of archaeological drawing, from its beginnings to the present day. Based on the study of this evolution, an attempt is done to understand the present ways of drawing as well as to foresee which its fate could be in case a deep and critical reflection on this topic be not undertaken. Next, a specific grammatical basis for graphical language is proposed. Drawing is seen as a language, and as so a specific grammar, semantics, as well as orthography, are required. From the consideration of these aspects, this Thesis proposes a graphical language focused on the specific needs of the archaeological-architectonical drawing. Finally, conclusions for future prospects are drawn from the different aspects examined in this work. The current capacity to actually address the present changes and the unavoidable future challenges which will shake up the field of graphical documentation is considered, while pointing up to existing epistemological gaps and proposing correction tools, with the ultimate purpose of contributing to transform a periculum in mora into a post nubila, Phoebus in the area of architectonical-archaeological drawing.

Anàlisi de la xarxa de comunicacions i del transport a la Catalunya romana: estudis de distribució i mobilitat

De Soto Cañamares, Pau 20 June 2010 (has links)
The basic concept which this work has been articulated with is that the analysis of the Roman economy was also reconstructed from the distribution and the mobility of goods. Several methodological approaches are used to these days that also suggest how Roman transport works. The analysis of data provided by the archaeological material is certainly one of the most important as the recording is just the result of the movement of such goods. The study of ancient sources describe in its passages such issues as transportation, the purchasing or selling of products or aspects of Roman law, which also represent a source of valuable information. Meanwhile, this work provides a view of the use of infrastructure and the simulation of the movement as indispensable to know the benefits and shortcomings of the transport system created in Roman times. A thorough analysis of each distribution models set (both temporary and cheap) provides valuable information for understanding the mechanisms of the Roman economy and society, but also presents a series of shortcomings that make its interpretation a incomplete result. It is therefore obvious that the combination of all of them should allow a more global perspective of the Roman economy, especially in matters of the movement of goods. The knowledge of infrastructure is essential to obtain a more accurate knowledge of the freight transportation. Therefore the first part of this work has been presented to study the communications network of the Catalan territory. The lack of previous studies which globally, thoroughly and systematically treated the whole set of communications on this Roman territory, forced to devote a significant part of this project precisely to the gathering, documentation, analysis and digitization of Romanian communications. This project has taken into account while analyzing the whole infrastructure of Roman roads which existed in Roman times, whether through land environment, river or sea. Hence, the knowledge of infrastructure and working of transport has been used as a basis for interpreting the economic particularities of the north east region of Tarragona in Roman times. The results of this thesis has been, therefore, developing a model of the commercial movement which can help to a better understanding of the economic and political peculiarities of this region and to provide with new answers to the questions about mobility in Roman times as it might be the distribution of archaeological material in Catalonia. The simulation results have allowed to obtain, with quantified data, assessment of costs and time needed to transport goods from different parts of the Catalan territory. Quantification of transport costs is an indispensable tool to justify if the archaeological record follows, for example, patterns of market strategies or on the contrary it is being influenced by other elements such as a state grant to finance all or part of the transportation costs. In fact, it can be understood that this work has attempted to first evaluate numerically the particularities of the Roman communications in Catalonia. Moving away from more or less intuitive perceptions or assumptions, the results of this study provide an estimated quantification of transport costs in terms of a market system. As it has been seen throughout the whole work, coincidences or differences between the model and the archaeological documentation allow to indicate peculiarities of the system.

Towards Functional Analysis of Archaeological Objects through Reverse Engineering Processes

da Silva Dias Moitinho de Almeida, Vera 12 December 2013 (has links)
Archaeology seems to be a quintessentially ‘visual’ discipline, because visual perception makes us aware of such fundamental properties of objects as their size, orientation, form, colour, texture, spatial position, distance, all at once. I assume that human behaviour in the past can be asserted on the examination of archaeological observables in the present. In any case, I take into account that there are also non visual features characterizing ancient objects and materials. Information that should make us aware of many functional properties of objects is multidimensional in nature: size, which makes reference to height, length, depth, weight and mass; shape and form, which make reference to the geometry of contour, surfaces and volume; texture, which refers to microtopography (roughness, waviness, and lay) and visual appearance (colour variations, brightness, reflectivity and transparency); and finally material composition, meaning the combining of distinct elements to form a whole, and the manner in which such parts are combined. This research is based on the more global idea of Perception (from the Latin perceptio, percipio), usually defined as the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. It should be understood not as the passive receipt of these signals, but the integration of learning, memory, and expectation. This research explores different ways of understanding the very idea of archaeological perception, which involves top-down effects as well as the bottom-up process of processing some sensory input. The bottom-up processing is basically low-level information that’s used to build up higher-level information (e.g., shapes, forms and textures for object recognition and functional explanation). The top-down processing refers to an archaeologist’s concept and expectations (knowledge) that influence perception. The approach adopted here is to follow current computational theories of object perception to ameliorate the way archaeology can deal with the explanation of human behaviour in the past (function) from the analysis of visual and non-visual data, taking into account that visual appearances and even compositional characteristics only constrain the way an object may be used, but never fully determine it. I suggest that perceptual properties should be rigorously measured and coded if archaeologists intend to understand how objects were produced and/or used in the past. The insufficiency and lack of a clear consensus on the traditional methods of form description – mostly visual, descriptive, ambiguous, subjective and qualitative – have invariably led to ambiguous and subjective interpretations of its functions. It is thus strongly advisable to systematize, formalize and standardize methods and procedures more objective, precise, mathematical and quantitative, and whenever possible automated. In this context, I intend to develop a framework based on three dimensional geometrical digital models to measure, describe, test and analyse the use and behaviour of archaeological artefacts. I try to understand the possible relationships between the geometry, material, and function(s) of archaeological artefacts by suggesting new ways of studying the way behaviour in the past can be asserted on the examination of archaeological observables in the present. In this research, a novel framework is applied to three case studies which span a broad diachrony ranging from the Palaeolithic in Cantabria to the Neolithic in Catalonia, Spain. In respect to the archaeological objects, these encompass rock art, sculptures, lithics, and bows, as well as a wide variety of raw-materials. Each case study addresses its own archaeological questions, has particular aims, and therefore approaches. They are not intended to be exhaustive, but to provide a rounded picture in terms of the framework´s potentialities and effectiveness.

Gonzalez-Ramirez, Andrea 02 December 2014 (has links)
This Doctoral Thesis presents the results of an investigation that has an empirical basis/research on the Ancient Chavin civilisation who had an archaeogical site with a set of stone sculptures shaped heads. An apical portion together with carved stone sculpture and a unique context indicates original use in megalithic masonry, some of these representatives in situ show a standardised form in the upper third of the main buildings of monumental architectural complex jobs. These monoliths are located in a narrow inter mountain valley in the Central Andes dating back to between 1200/500-400 BC. This doctoral's research is based on a set of objects from a museum collection and on an archaeologically complex temporo- spatial dimensions. Therefore this aims to question some core theoretical and methodological aspects traditionally used in the archaeological study found in the figurative representations. From a general theoretical point of view, it is argued/hypothesised that the interest in the study of archaeological figurative representations stems from all social materiality. In the first instance it is believed that this is derived from the realisation of human labour. Then at a substantive level it is argued that their specific interest concerns which derives it's existence from the social needs of political-ideological or simply idiosyncratic, whose explanatory factors are not in a plane of identifying types of social organisation but it must be understood on a case by case basis. Since the available evidence of the production and reproduction of social life is symbolised/reflected in the productions and use of the figurative representations in a particular historical situation in a relationship. The development of these theoretical starting points lead to three main questions:1) What was the level of standardisation of production of the sculptures?2) Does the existence of standardisation would allow it to identify it as a skilled job?3) If this is a specialised job would that be considered as compatable with other subsistence activities or be considered as exclusive? The integration of the results obtained from different analysis of the physical and figurative stone sculptures of properties indicates a high degree of standardisation that is reinforced by the presence of two main groups of exclusive representations. A review of the history of some techniques of direct carving in stone sculptures. The results of the analysis on the set of objects and their integration in different constructions phases of a new process of architectural production, suggests that such standardisation result from a specialised production possibly accompanied by the institutionalisation of knowledge transfer systems. In addition with further archaeological evidence found for the production and reproduction of social life available, could further strengthen the hypothesis of a concentration of the domination of intellectual production by minority groups, whose economic benefit would still require empirical evidence.
