Vivir tras el golpe. Trayectorias sociales de personas que sobreviven a in traumatismo craneoencefálico

Sanz Victoria, Silvia 05 March 2015 (has links)
The protagonists of this research are people whose existence has been marked by a blow to the head; a strong impact on the skull following a car accident, a motorcycle accident, a hit by a car, or a fall at the workplace ... A severe traumatic brain injury changes the life not only of the person who suffers from it, but also his/her immediate environment, especially, those family members that become the primary caregivers. This situation could be described as a perverse consequence of technological progress of our society. On the one hand, because the most common reason that originates the frequency and virulence of it are traffic accidents. On the other hand, the current technological advances in the field of road safety and medical care have made possible the survival of these people, who were just dying in the crash before. This progress, unfortunately, has not been produced in parallel with the necessary improvements in attention to many social problems that occur once stepping the reality of hospitals and rehabilitation centers. The overall objective proposed by this doctoral dissertation is to reflect and analyze the social trajectories of the survivors of a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). To this end, the current thesis is framed by Disability Studies and approaches to this reality from three theoretical pillars. First pillar depicts the critical reflection that leads medical anthropology to the hegemony of the biomedical ideology in our context. Second pillar considers the approach to disability as a form of social action, conditioned by social interactions, their normative bodies, and social, political and economic factors. To this end, two different theoretical approaches are developed: Symbolic Interactionism Theory of Goffman and a Theory of Practice of Bourdieu. And third pillar shapes the reflection from the perspective of the concept of citizenship, one of the most genuine issues of social anthropology: the management of difference; particularly, differences in the human functioning. This doctoral dissertation is an ethnographic research with an abductive and open design; that have opted for an emerging methodology that concatenate discovery and validation. The research was carried out using a combination of techniques (participant observation in several ethnographic scenarios; multiple life stories ⎯parallel and cross⎯; and the analysis of documentary realities) with a strategy of analysis based on the constant comparative method and the theoretical saturation. Actual ethnography is structured into three chapters. In the first chapter, the processes experienced by people living with a TBI (the person who have suffered the accident and his/her family members) in the province of Barcelona are reconstructed from the time of the accident. It is confirmed that TBI is configured in the lives of people not only as a medical diagnosis, but also as a complex social process in which interactions, transactions and contradictions between different institutions and stakeholders implied (healthcare and social services managers and professionals; bureaucrats of different systems of government / administration, insurers and workplace accident mutual insurance companies; lawyers, prosecutors and judges, etc.) are interwoven. In the second chapter, it is analyzed how the society (public and expert opinion) defines and represents the TBI and, therefore, sustains its existence. Based on these considerations, and analyzing its impact on the processes of recovery of personal autonomy of the persons with TBI, this chapter develops an analytical proposal: a typology of processes of people living with a TBI. In the third chapter, the analysis focuses on the needs expressed by this group, especially two aspects that are recurrent in all analyzed processes and also in the documentation consulted: the lack of information throughout the process and discontinuity of care. Analyzing these themes from the critical knowledge generated by this investigation, permits identify aspects that, in general, tend not to be challenged and can help envision alternatives that transform the reality of the survivors of TBI.

La ciencia del médium. Las investigaciones psíquicas en España (1888-1931)

Graus Ferrer, Andrea 24 February 2015 (has links)
In this PhD dissertation I examine the development of psychical research in Spain from 1888 to 1931 through four case studies that involved a Spanish scientist and either a Spanish or a foreign medium. I demonstrate that there was no institutionalized movement in favour of psychical research in Spain. Most researchers carried out their work with mediums individually, especially in the case of physicians who were interested in modern psychiatry and psychology. In an attempt to move beyond local history, in this dissertation I frame the case studies within what I consider to be significant stages of psychical research in an international context, particularly the French context, which I argue was the most influential in Spain, both for spiritism and for psychical research. I firstly conclude that Spanish psychical researchers did not transform mediums into mere subjects of study. Hence, the distinction between the subject of study of psychical research and the spiritist medium continued to be very vague throughout the period considered (1888-1931). Secondly, I argue that the scientists involved assumed that being a prestigious scientist was enough to become an expert on psychical research. Additionally, I show that to proclaim themselves as experts they used social criteria, such as having well-established contacts with foreign scientific authorities or having studied the most celebrated mediums. Finally, I argue that, taking into account the lack of an institutionalized movement of psychical research as well as the difficulties researchers faced in finding support within the scientific community, the spiritist movement acted as an occasional ally: it published scientists’ work on psychical research and it provided them with study subjects. Therefore, I conclude that demarcating psychical research from spiritism was not a priority in Spain.

Tying the knot and kissing childhood goodbye? early marriage in educationally expanding societies

Chager Navarro, Sonia 21 November 2014 (has links)
As adolescence progresses, having more or less freedom of choice influences the different events that characterize the transition to adulthood for women, with the initiation of sexual activity, first marriage and childbearing often being perceived as key steps in family formation. In the domain of marriage, in particular, even though in the last decades, an increase in the age at marriage has occurred in most countries worldwide, still to date many young girls will keep marrying before their eighteenth birthday. This practice prevails across much of Africa, Asia and Latin America, and in some form or another exists throughout the world. To date, although regional variation within national boundaries can be found, an early median age at first marriage is still prevalent in Middle/West Africa and the South of Asia, followed by the East/Southern Africa, Southeast Asia, and to a lesser extent the Caribbean and Central America. However, national figures can often veil an elevated prevalence of early marriage for some regions or population sectors. In the last decades, nonetheless, early marriage has been slightly diminishing, more so in some countries than others. Hence, this changing pattern arises one main question: Why is the postponement of marriage really taking place? There are two main forces usually employed for its explanation: education and labour force participation. There is a general awareness among social scientists of the association between age at union formation and the educational level achieved, in which education is seen as being a strong agent on family change. The fact that studies show that, systematically, women with more years of schooling tend to delay their entry into first union, brings upon the idea that in a scenario in which a great educational expansion has been taking place, marriage timing will evidently alter. Hence, one would expect to observe later ages at first marriage. And, due to the fact that in many countries there has been an increase in the age at marriage as well as an educational expansion, occurring almost in parallel, both phenomena have often been linked together. Consequently, in terms of the prevalence of early marriages, the expected outcome would be a descent of child brides as more girls reach higher levels of education. Hence, in the present thesis on early marriage, instead of performing in-depth analysis of those regions in which child marriage is a profoundly rooted practice, the focus is mainly on some of those countries in which there is some change in the marriage timing towards its delay as well as an increase of female schooling levels. Thus, one developing country for each continental region - that is India, Kenya and Colombia - comprise the Doctoral dissertation's major body -, with India representing the one which child brides have historically been a common feature in their society; while certain populations within the Kenyan context have also practiced such early marriage timing; and in Colombia unions happen somewhat later. Yet, although these three countries have seen relatively impressive gains in their female educational expansion, they present three different scenarios in terms the possible effect of the change in the educational structure on marriage timing and on the prevalence of early marriage specifically. So, with data from the Integrated Public Use of Microdata Series international project (IPUMSi) and the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program, the central aim in the present research has been to provide some evidence on this regard by comparing three different experiences -India, Kenya and Colombia- since they have all undergone major advances in terms of educational achievement, as well as changes in their early marriage prevalence.

Malaver Narváez, María Carmela 04 February 2016 (has links)
The main objective of this dissertation is to deepen the mirror, the body and identity as crucial themes in the construction of meaning in the novel "Ifigenia" by Teresa de la Parra (1924). This study aims to demonstrate that the evolution experienced by the main character is achieved every time she looks at the mirror. The mirror's reflection gives the character a new identity. It will be shown that the mirror acts as proof of that identity, which will be constantly changing as it is an endless work in process. This is the fundamental narrative process as through this premise Teresa de la Parra sets the main character and consequently the whole network of events in the novel. The thesis is divided into four chapters: Chapter I will be a preamble to present the author herself and how she was seen by her contemporaries. It also establishes the methodology and it explains the concepts that will be developed throughout the work and it starts approaching the novel through Venezuelan and Latin American criticism. In Chapter II we will take a closer look to the character through her reflection in the mirror. At each appearance in the mirror there are new thresholds and doors unfolding; once these are passed the character is connected with a new identity. In chapter III the importance of beauty throughout the work is shown. We will take a brief tour of its history through time, in the life of the author and perform an analysis of the character and her environment to determine how the " myth of beauty " influences the heroin’s identity. In Chapter IV the effects of aromas will be linked to emotions. Perfumes and scents have a special relevance in the novel, as they influence the outcome of the work. An approach to the history of perfume will be made to show which elements can be found in the novel. The scent will also be linked to the identity of the main character, since it works as her mirror and reflection. It will be proven that smells bring awareness to the main character, and this will be key for the outcome of the novel. The perfume also acts as a mark, it is the expression of the subtleties of the soul and a device that elevates feelings to the point of being another liberating element that gives power in the domestic sphere, in the prison of the room where the character can write, read and fly away from her reality.

Medicalización y política internacional en el Ecuador del siglo XX: El Instituto Nacional de Higiene y Medicina Tropical “Leopoldo Izquieta Pérez”

Aguas Ortiz, Juan Carlos 09 February 2016 (has links)
In the past century, the Rockefeller family influenced the entire world through seventy-five different institutions in fields such as art and its preservation (cultural heritage), economic development, medicine, public health, education, international relations, natural parks and environment (natural heritage), religion, social welfare and philanthropy. In 1913, after the disintegration of the Standard Oil Company, John Davison Rockefeller Sr., John Davison Rockefeller Jr. and Frederick T. Gates created the Rockefeller Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation was, from the start, to fund international programs with the aim of increasing the influence of the United States around the world. One of the organizations that helped to channel its work was the International Health Division (1913-1951). This institution developed and implemented programs that unfolded according to strategic interests of the United States in the fields of medicine, public health, education and philanthropy worldwide. Recent studies have shown that the programs developed by the Rockefeller Foundation determined the socio-economic situation of many countries in the 20th century. These studies suggest that the “aid” of the Rockefeller Foundation, through International Health Division, make available a high-level scientific medicine for countries deemed as developed, while in countries considered poor and/or underdeveloped the Rockefeller Foundation funded the implementation of health campaigns and the creation of local health agencies to keep useful agricultural economies, a healthy workforce and disease-free maritime ports for raw materials. This “aid” to these countries would have created health structures specifically aimed at the increase of the volume of production and thereby to the short-, medium- and long-term recovery of investments. However, such “aid” would not have served to promote an independent, sovereign and wide-ranging development program which, based upon the research and disease control, allowed those countries to overtake the boundary of underdevelopment. In this context, the encounter of the Rockefeller Foundation with the Ecuadorian state occurred between 1916 and 1946. During that period, and under well-defined interests, the Rockefeller Foundation addressed the “eradication” of the yellow fever in the port of Guayaquil and the creation of a laboratory for the research and control of infectious diseases, essential for the strategic interests of the United States during World War II which was consolidated during the Cold War. The “aid” of the Foundation also responded to the interests of their local peers who, during the interwar period, focused on the increase of the workforce output and the expansion of markets and areas of production. In all, the “aid” of the Rockefeller Foundation acted as a complementary force to the works of the Pan American Health Organization, the Institute of Inter-American Affairs, the World Health Organization and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. In this respect, this dissertation contributes to the historical understanding of the processes of re-conceptualization of scientific research in public health that took place in Ecuador through the activity of American international aid agencies between 1895 and 1965. Specifically, through the study of the foundation and establishment of a central laboratory as a key piece in the development of public health policies, we provide arguments and tools to understand the design and development of such policies in Ecuador in connection with the conceptual and methodological transformations that took place in the field of biomedicine in that period; to analyze the combined role of the Rockefeller Foundation, the US government, and international aid organizations in the development of these policies; and to identify and characterize the transformation of the colonial strategies in America in the 20th century, their relationship with the design and management of public health policies internationally, and their intersections with dynamics of social inclusion and exclusion.

Les adaptacions cinematogràfiques d’obres teatrals a Catalunya 2000-2010. Disseny i procediments compositius

Vilardell Grimau, Teresa 01 February 2016 (has links)
André Bazin said, in the context of the composition of the film adaptations of plays that the theater was a "false friend”. We have investigated why. The research used the corpus of film adaptations (2000-2010) theatrical texts written in Catalonia to analyze in the field of theater and film design, the specific composition of the film adaptations of theatrical texts. The enunciation of the text and theatrical functions of the main text and secondary, as well as the various methods of composition are key elements of the investigation.

Castro Garcia, Òscar 2 February 2016 (has links)
The question cognition organisms without nervous system is the main goal of my research. From the moment I began to study the fundamentals of biosemiòtica and its origins basing on studies of marine biologist Jakob Johann von Uexküll (1864-1944), has expanded my own training philosophical and scientific acquiring a phenomenological sense of what we call life.In fact Uexküll was rejected studies biology at the time, despite being one of the pioneers who studied reflexes stimuli in peripheral nerves of marine invertebrates. His affinity for the vital issue seen from the standpoint of the study subject (subject alive) was one of the key n that was confronted with the vision of the development of neo-Darwinian times, mechanistic, reductionist and physical - chemical biological physiology. His alliance with the vitality of Hans Driesch misinterpreted always ended up being subject to rejection within the scientific community, although he was the father and teacher of the ethology Konrad Lorenz.I noticed that the developments on the issue of what is life, not part of the corpus of biology. De facto, I can not shelter the concept of a vine, as we speak of a "Ding an Sich" is a numen. In fact the question of life is a question of the "phenomenon of life," or vital phenomenon, since it is what we can reasonably ask categories according to Kant reason. The question for life should be a question ontological becomes a question epistemology, epistemological, and may be questioned in a phenomenological _com object of cognition / conscientious subject cognicer / conscious, and as such "subject of living." Mutatis mutandis, the question cognition itself is an insoluble question.Cognitive science provide approaches that enable us to fit within cognition processes of perception, appreciation, sensitivity, representation, etc.Artificial intelligence has evolved significantly by offering new paradigms of artificial life and their hybrids organic response to the condition of the possibility of adaptive behaviors key to developing self organized robotics. In these studies the embodiment of cognition personally tend to speak of "incorporation" - is the basis for the development of new studies, such as phenomenology of cognition, or allowing neurofenomenología provide an objective study of the subject cognoscent .But cognition is still subject of complex living systems, or rather of higher animals, humans and "animated".But less has been done agencies? Also, until recently, has come to see the behavior of bees and ants and other invertebrates beyond behavioral added. The study of complex systems allows us to see as a collective phenomenon becomes a phenomenon of cooperativity, including one can speak of collective intelligence, putting finger between the selfish gene which we are so proud . But if we go down to the primitive organisms, no special nervous system, then the phenomenon of cognition had vanished. There we found a reason to talk about this phenomenon. But that was Humberto Maturana 1970, released a statement which led tail.In his book "Biology of Cognition" in its page 13 specifically says "living systems are cognitive systems and the process of life is a process of cognition. This assumption is valid for all agencies, whether or not the nervous system. " Maturana's assertion establishes the status of co-emergence between auopoiesis and perception surrounding medium as a cognitive process that identifies the autopoietic processes in biological organisms, both unicellular beings as multicellular This statement adds a second Maturana regarding cognitive processes: "If a living system enters a cognitive interaction, its internal state is transformed in a way relevant for maintenance, and it enters a new interaction, without loss of identity. In an organism without a nervous system (or its functional equivalent) of their interactions are physical or chemical nature (a molecule is absorbed and starts an enzymatic process or a photon is captured and a step in photosynthesis occurs ).For that agency relationships between physical events are held is your domain interactions. " That is, the body without cognitive processes in the nervous system and is plausible although interactions are physical-chemical nature, their cognitive process is out of this domain, rather maintains a significant relationship to the process autpoiètic. This relationship is primarily for emergency cognoscent an observer to study the phenomenon. In an otherwise not be seen any cognition or observers aware of what they perceived themselves or by organizations. In fact the problem is Tomas Nagel on the bat extrapolated to any organization: how to be a body being that agency? My hypothesis is based on cognitive processes can be identified in organisms without nervous system. My question is not about cognition itself, but for those processes that make it possible, allowing for biogenic s'automantingi and enriched - as it is called Pamela Lyon- these brainless organisms I chose to slime molds, for various reasons explained in the preamble and which are closely linked to assertions about Uexküll capaciat have a specific Umwelt. But what Umwelt perceived a body that can not represent themselves inside the environment around him, much less how there can be "carriers of meaning" (in terms of own Uexküll) in the environment? They can perhaps distinguish what is essential for survival of what is not? How do they perceive? such as signal transduction from outside to an amoeba?not only from a biochemical point of view (which is complex but manageable in the development of biomedicine and microbiology), but from the perspective of semiotics applied to the biological characteristics of the organisms themselves. I focused on slime molds s.Physarum plasmodium polycephalum in particular, for their exceptional be a giant single-celled organism, but plurinucleat with capacities mé s still outstanding. But this presents its companion pseudoplasmodi, multicellular no less exceptional doscoideum the Dictyostelium.I refer also inevitably known as prokaryotes Escherichia coli. I have developed my work dividing it into two fundamental aspects of study: The first part was epistemology towards organisms. That is we start specifically from the theory of knowledge and scientific disciplines. Beginning with the foundation of biosemiòtica, to continue after the phenomenology of cognitive biology. After deepen subsystems, showing specific examples of organisms and their internal components, primarily the cytoplasm. In this way we aim to focus the plausibility of a speech on the "proto-cognition" in these subsystems (agents proto-cellular and intracellular phenomena and stability, both structural homeodinàmics). After this stage we biocomunicació the phenomenon to discuss the mecanostransducció signals a fundamental stage for decision making and ability to discriminate to make sense of what happens endogenously exogenously. Hence we study biology, cognitive perspective of phenomenology. This entails an historical approach that allows us to see in biology experimental and theoretical conceptualizations of the first confrontations on the concept of cognition - understood before as "psychology" .- protozoa and how his speech, like that of Uexküll not lost force (bridging the gap of these diachronic scientific discourse that, being children of their time, deserve considerable attention). Then we go to the foundations of cognition representacionistes not to place discourse appropriate to fit the reality of bodies. And finally we talked about the biology and cognitive minimal cognitive principles that outline the state of affairs on their plausibility in organisms without nervous system, which in fact is the theory in question. The second part of the bodies epistemology from its methodological development research. So we give priority to know briefly what a slime molds and more specifically the Physarum plasmodium polycephalum, its physiological and morphological grounds that make organisms are exceptional. Then we started a brief history of slime molds from the history of biology, mycology, until today, part of protistology From this moment the development of investigations in accordance with the question about the condition of possibility of cognition, offering interesting and exceptional developments that allow at least deeply challenged by a categorical formulation of the phenomenon of agency As part of cognition as indisputable part of the case. The issue can not be resolved, nor intended. Rather, the goal is the proper fit within the relevant disciplines, and provide guidance consistent and constructive phenomenon of cognition, which is tautological phenomenon of life, but contains both natural and artificial. Or as Aristotle tells us, "Being a subject means that something given / specific subject (πρᾶγμα) without being separable part (μέρος) own, can not exist outside (χωρίς) of what they are" (Categories II, 1st 24- 25). Keywords: Cognition, biosemiòtica, interdisciplinary, Physarum polycephalum principles minimal cognitive semantics molecular tensegrity, buffer, biogenic, autopoiesis, biohermenéutica, systems biology, regulation, agencialitat, adaptive behavior, enactividad autopoietic lace teleonómico, organicismo qualitative Proto -qualia.

Albrich Viñas, Sergi 28 January 2016 (has links)
The Font de les Bagasses Unit (Pons, 1977) (Montsec Mountains, NE Iberian Peninsula) hosts a rich assemblage of larger foraminifera, which was described for the first time in the early 20th Century from the locality of Tragó de Noguera (Marginal Mountains). The locality was submerged under the water of the Santa Anna reservoir. In this work, a detailed architectural study on selected agglutinated larger foraminifera including Choffatella aff. rugoretis Gendrot, Hemicyclammina chalmasi (Schlumberger), Cuneolina conica Orbigny, Cuneolina cylindrica Henson and Dictyopsella kiliani Munier-Chalmas has been carried out. Moreover, the biostratigraphic range of agglutinated larger foraminifera and their associated porcelaneous and lamellar-perforate foraminifera are also established. The age of the assemblage is early Campanian. The biostratigraphy of Campanian-Maastrichtian carbonate platforms is largely based on the genus Orbitoides. However, while the taxonomy and the chronostratigraphic age of the youngest species of this genus are well established, there are still many controversies on the earliest species. In this work their morphological characters using a large collection of samples from the type-localities and from continuous sections in the southern Pyrenees have been restudied. Based on these new observations, the long forgotten species O. sanctae-pelagiae is reinstated, while O. dordoniensis is considered a junior synonym of O. santae-pelagiae. Successive populations of O. hottingeri, O. sanctae-pelagiae and O. douvillei show gradual morphological changes in time marked by an increase in the size and complexity of the macrospheric embryonal apparatus, an increase of the size of the adult specimens of both generations and the progressive appearance and development of true lateral chamberlets. The Font de les Bagasses Unit in the southern Pyrenees preserves a high-resolution archive of the evolution of the earliest Orbitoides. Strontium isotope stratigraphy indicates that the oldest species, O. hottingeri, appeared in the earliest Campanian, close to the Santonian-Campanian boundary, and was replaced by O. sanctaepelagiae at a level closely corresponding to the boundary between the Placenticeras bidorsatum and Menabites delawarensis ammonite zones.

Génesis y legitimación del pensamiento histórico

Puig Punyet, Enric 23 January 2014 (has links)
Time from which the historical perception of the Western world operates, from which we can assert that we live “in time”, is understood as a linear, objective, absolute, simultaneous and spatial time. And some ascertainments specially affect these five characteristics: taking into account that the only element from which time can be perceived is cyclic (in its astronomic, mechanic and atomic variants), some problems appear regarding linearity; the same happens with objectivity if we think that the time we perceive internally (regulated by circadian rhythms and the thermodynamic dialectic between generation and corruption) does not allow us to measure this assumed external time; the only guideline that can be used to set up a unique time between the subjects A and B is the Earth movement and its derivations. This calls into question the ontological position of the quality of absoluteness and the quality of simultaneity. Lastly, it is at least suspicious that time, which is understood as independent from space (even if nothing moves, it is said that time passes by), is always dependent from it for its correct measurement. It is evident, in consequence, that the time that rules systematically over the man, and that it is categorically understood that there is no possible reinterpretation, becomes a problem in front of the pair of questions that put under scrutiny its most intrinsic features. In front of this inaccuracy of its definition itself, a tour is proposed in the next pages; this tour will guide the reader through diverse conceptions that have forced the concept to make clear that maybe its most fundamental structure is not as we think. Thus, the aim of this work is two-sided, and is correlatively presented in two parts. Firstly, the absolutist definition of the concept “time” is put under analysis, a definition that from the modernity has been the only way from which Western culture has lived the temporality phenomenon. To accomplish this issue, the concept is analyzed through alternatives of comprehension of temporality that some theoretical approaches have suggested: first, pre-Newtonian approaches; second, contemporary Physics approaches; third, contemporary phenomenological and ontological approaches. These three approaches will offer a map to the reader about the frame in which the legitimation of the absolutist definition of the concept “time” over the rest was produced. Finally, the tour will show how this process of legitimation occurred inter-subjectively to a deep transformation of the concept. The reverse of the same fundamental aim of this work is based on an archeological framework (in Foucaltian terms) of the causes that led to the transformation of the concept and brought Newton and Kant to the need to legitimate a transformation that actually had been taking place gradually by historic contingences. The basis of this transformation will be find in three major historic contingences that have deeply defined the Occidental world: patriarchy, Judeo-Christian monotheism and capitalism.

Berenguer Clarià, Joaquim 20 January 2016 (has links)
Our research concerns eighteenth century Spain and is focused on the development and diffusion of Differential and Integral Calculus or Calculus of Fluxions, as it was known in Great Britain. The analysis of Differential Calculus, as a new field of mathematics in eighteenth century Europe is not a new topic, but it has often been used to approach this topic from the “centre” and via the well-known scientists Isaac Newton or Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Our thesis focus on the reception of this new calculus into Spain, through Tomàs Cerdà (1715-1791). Cerdà was a Catalan Jesuit devoted to the teaching of mathematics in Barcelona and Madrid, in the mid-eighteenth century, and who published several mathematicals texts and prepared many others for future publication. One of these manuscripts is a treatise on Differential Calculus, the Tratado de Fluxiones, which is a translation and an adaptation of another book, The Doctrine and Application of Fluxions (1750) by an English mathematician, Thomas Simpson (1710-1761). Thus, the main aim of our thesis centers on the analysis of the role of Cerdà in the introduction of Differential and Integral Calculus in eighteenth Century Spain, by means his Tratado de Fluxiones. Cerdà appropriated Simpson’s fluxional calculus and managed it into a new shape, basically by thinking of his pupils. The main topics of our thesis are how and why Cerdà decided who would be his guide for the introduction of Differential and Integral Calculus and what his own contributions were to this work. To that end, our research is aimed at a better understanding of the process of popularisation of scientific knowledge, in such a way that it becomes an active part of the building process of this knowledge.
