Maximal Clique Scheduling: A Simple Algorithm to Bound Maximal Independent Graph Scheduling

Sutuntivorakoon, Kanes 06 September 2012 (has links)
In this paper, we consider interference networks where the connectivity is known globally while the channel gains are known up to a particular distance from each node. In this setting, we provide a new achievability, called Maximal Clique Scheduling (MCS), which is a special case of Maximal Independent Graph Scheduling (MIG Scheduling) proposed earlier. The strategy is evaluated using the notion of normalized sum rate which is a metric to evaluate performance of networks with mismatched knowledge. The achievable normalized sum rate of the proposed MCS strategy is easier to analyze for certain classes of networks and can be used to bound the normalized sum rate of MIG Scheduling. We investigate the normalized sum rate achieved by MCS for two classes of networks. The first class is formed by interference networks where each link is connected with probability $p$. The second class is derived from Wyner 1-D model of placements of base stations and mobile nodes. We find that increasing knowledge about the network leads to increasing normalized sum-rate. However, in a random network, the increase is slower as compared to Wyner network because most nodes are far away from a node and hence learning more helps less until the whole network is known.

Multi-View Imaging of Drosophila Embryos

Groh, Paul January 2008 (has links)
There are several reasons for imaging a single, developing embryo from multiple view points. The embryo is a complex biomechanical system and morphogenesis movements in one region typically produce motions in adjacent areas. Multi-view imaging can be used to observe morphogenesis and gain a better understanding of normal and abnormal embryo development. The system would allow the embryo to be rotated to a specific vantage point so that a particular morphogenetic process may be observed clearly. Moreover, a multi-view system can be used to gather images to create an accurate three-dimensional reconstruction of the embryo for computer simulations. The scope of this thesis was to construct an apparatus that could capture multi-view images for these applications. A multi-view system for imaging live Drosophila melanogaster embryos, the first of its kind, is presented. Embryos for imaging are collected from genetically modified Drosophila stocks that contain a green fluorescing protein (GFP), which highlights only specific cell components. The embryos are mounted on a wire that is rotated under computer control to desired viewpoints in front of the objective of a custom-built confocal microscope. The optical components for the orizontallyaligned microscope were researched, selected and installed specifically for this multi-viewing apparatus. The multiple images of the stacks from each viewpoint are deconvolved and collaged so as to show all of the cells visible from that view. The process of rotating and capturing images can be repeated for many angles over the course of one hour. Experiments were conducted to verify the repeatability of the rotation mechanism and to determine the number of image slices required to produce a satisfactory image collage from each viewpoint. Additional testing was conducted to establish that the system could capture a complete 360° view of the embryo, and a time-lapse study was done to verify that a developing embryo could be imaged repeatedly from two separate angles during ventral furrow formation. An analysis of the effects of the imaging system on embryos in terms of photo-bleaching and viability is presented.

Varför tycker du inte som mig!? : Livsåskådningars struktur, funktion och immanenta konflikt

Liljeskog, Aron January 2011 (has links)
This report is an attempt to clarify how religious and non-religious views-of-life [livsåskådningar] are created through the collaboration and opposition of religious and scientific elements/ideas. This with the hope of reaching a fruitful result related to the solution of world-view related conflicts, such as the ones existing between science and religion, on an individual and societal level. This is accomplished with the help of two assertions: (1) Mankind has a need to explain its existence and surroundings. (2) Religion and science has their origins in the same seed and aim to serve the same purpose, or function. Together these two assertions lay the theoretical foundations of this report which implies that all humans have an innate need of sustaining a stable world-view. The result of this report is that a final solution to world-view related conflicts are beyond reach as our mental and physical nature limits us. However there are strategies for minimizing world-view related conflicts effect on society.

Intensiv lästräning : En interventionsstudie med Rydaholmsmetoden i årskurs 7

Egerhag, Helén, Svärd, Evalotta January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine how the Rydaholm method works for pupils within reading difficulties in secondary school. The aim was also to analyze how students perceive the work with the method. We used a quantitative method in terms of a study of intervention with 15 students in grade 7. A qualitative method was also used with interviews, this to assess how the students perceived the work with the Rydaholm method. The results of the study showed that most students increased their test results in terms of decoding. The intervention was conducted over a period of five weeks, which may have contributed to a certain effect of learning of the test. The interviews with the students revealed a mainly positive attitude to the work with the method. During the interviews some students revealed that they experienced exclusion by working with the method, specifically as one-to-one tutoring was required outside the normal timetable. In search of a relational perspective, it’s important that the work is done in cooperation with the student. Thus, the organizational conditions may implicate difficulties for interventions of this kind.

Diversification Management of TV Stations¡GInternet Business Entry Strategies and Performance Assessment

Chang, Jin-an 30 August 2010 (has links)
Nowadays, most of the TV stations in Taiwan have the same acts, which are involving in online business, but different in scopes. Some of them are running all kinds of different tasks online, such as e-commerce, ad-sells, pay per view and information offering. However, others are just providing the information offering service. According to this, we can notice that there has no identical processing procedure in the industry. Every firm has its own strategy about running business online. And it seems like the different entry strategies have play a important role in it. Thus, the study focuses on knowing how TV stations decided to run online business and formulated their entry strategies while conducting the diversification management. Within that, it also contains issues of strategic goals, business scopes and performance evaluations which will also be discussed in the study. This article uses case study approach and analyses two TV stations¡¦, Formosa Television and TVBS, diversification strategies. Combining the results and theories with secondary sources, we suggest that: (1) TV stations¡¦ Internet strategies are based on digital strategies. (2) The Internet plays a support function to the TV stations. (3) Diversification defines the scopes of the Internet business. (4) Owners¡¦ attitude. (5) Popularity decides the marketing platforms. (6) Functional resource-based view. (7) Program division decides the results of the promotion. (8) A mixing departmental performance assessment. (9) Unique performance assessment between different strategic activities.

Lei, Chun-Yu 15 July 2012 (has links)
With the changing economic structure, from the textile, food, petrochemicals, steel,to high-tech industry, capital and technical requirements are gradually increasing. With the liberalization and internationalization, market competition was intensified. The large conglomerates have strong financial, human, technical resources and capabilities, who are more competitive to face the intense environmental change. Taiwan 100 Group's asset size is 600 times than 40 years ago. As a result, large conglomerates grasp Taiwan's economic lifeline. The majority of conglomerates engaged in diversification, but which resources and capabilities can engage in what kind of diversification to deliver competitive advantage for conglomerates is an important subject. Therefore, this study chooses two long history and successful business group in Taiwan, which are Far Eastern Group and Yuen Foong Yu Group. To investigate that what kind of resources and capabilities they use to implement diversification strategies. Then escalating group¡¦s resources and further expand the scale of the groups. According to this study, the analysis showed that the Far Eastern Group and Yuen Foong Yu Group, technology, human resources, assets, industry position, industry business experience, management ability, organizational ability, are the key resources and capabilities to perform any kind of diversification strategies.

A case study of the Resource-Based View to Acer group's Reengineering

Lee, Chin-Tai 31 August 2012 (has links)
As the leading brand in the international PC industry, Acer has been encountered countless challenges on dramatically environmental change when it endeavored to create and operate its own brand. To achieve the aim of sustainable management and the strategy of organizational growth, Acer has embarked on its reengineering several times since it was established. The purpose of this study is based on the Resource-Based View to uncover what kind of key factories contributed in Acer¡¦s two time of reengineering? And what kind of unique resources and capabilities were created? This study also characterized and catalogued these unique resources and capabilities to figure out clearly that what kind of main resources and capabilities existed at the first glance. There are three stages for Acer¡¦s transformation: the first time reengineering was happened in 1992; the reengineering in 1998 was called the quasi-reengineering stage that Acer adjusted its organizational structure to relocate operational direction; the second time reengineering was happened in the end of 2000. Based on above three different stages, this study analyzes the effect of internal and external environment as well as the operational strategies on each stage to infer its resources and capabilities. Moreover, This study categorizes these resources and capabilities by the classify method of Fong- Cher Min (2000) into four groups, Tangible Asset, Intangible Asset, Human Resource and Organization Capability, and discuss how Acer used these resources and capabilities to foster them became the Sustainable Competitive Advantage to overcome the harsh IT industry environment. By the way of analyzing the case company in depth, this study found that the probability of resources or capabilities can be upgrade into the Sustainable Competitive Advantage was not only affect by the properties such as Appropriability or Inimitable, but also greatly influence by outside environment. Furthermore, the next time success of reengineering was attributed to those of resources or capabilities which have been accumulated since earlier periods. Therefore, this study suggests that a firm should continuously adjust its competences as well as accumulate reengineering experiences to cope with the unpredictable environment.

Taiwan Chemical SME¡¦s Growth Strategy in China Market (Unsaturated Polyester Resin Company A/B as Research Cases)

Chuang, Chiu 30 August 2004 (has links)
This research explores the growth strategy of Taiwan chemical SMEs in China market. In 2003, China has surpassed USA as the largest FDI receiving country while the trade across the Taiwan Strait for the same year , estimated by Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council, had climbed to USD 46.3 billion , around 24% growth vs. 2002. It will be valuable to explore how Taiwan chemical SMEs, the most active participants in the international business, shape their growth strategy with the constraint of resource scarcity. The resources-based view suggests that a firm¡¦s unique resources and capabilities provide the basis for a strategy. The research selects two case companies in Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR) industry to identify the resources relative to the shaping of the growth strategy. Furthermore, it also explores the relationship between the internal resources of the case company and its choice of growth strategy. We thus develop four prepositions to facilitate the discussion. We conducted in-depth interviews with the two case companies to reach the following conclusions. They are summarized as follows: - A SME with more manager controlled ownership structure tends to more aggressively pursue the growth. - A SME with pursuing more R&D investment will be more committed to growth. - Human Resources in SMEs are not a dominating role in pursuing a growth strategy. - Top managements¡¦ perception of the external environment reflects their personal experiences

The Resource Based View to analysis the different business model of the portal websites in Taiwan

Lu, Shao-chi 30 June 2006 (has links)
The development and application of internet successfully changed human¡¦s life. For example, when going shopping ,you don¡¦t go outside and compare the different prices in different stores. With the various applications of internet, all kinds of information form internet is overloading and the internet users are hard to explore the websites which is useful and meaningful. Therefore, the portal website is created to solve the problem. Jerry Yang established the first portal website named Yahoo! which is based on a catalogic search engine, and the Yahoo! Business model became the basic framework of portal websites. In Taiwan, Yam is the first Chinese portal website and then Pchome and Yahoo! kimo entered the market and shared the market value. Because of the internet bubble in 2000, The rising situation of market competition has changed rapidly, and only the survivors can face the crisis and decide to change their business models to find the definite position. The research is based on the framework of RBV to discuss the different business model of the three representative companies¡ÐYam, Pchome Online and Yahoo! kimo. According to the RBV, we can understand the resources of the three companies and analysis how to use the different resources to form their business model. The result of the research shows that the relationship between resources and business model, and describe the different shapes of the three companies. I hope that the case study of the research can be an good example to other potential portal website to create their competitive advantage
