Conexão: apartamentos e mídias em Belo Horizonte / Conection: apartments and medias in Belo Horizonte

Ângela Pereira Campos de Pinho 05 October 2005 (has links)
The recente evolution of the modus vivendi and the current behavior tendencies of urban populations may directly result from the wide networking possibilities offered by a number of new means of communication inserted into private living spaces. Therefore one intends to verify the adequacy of contemporary apartment architecture to such a new media and the resulting user's demands. This work is based upon studies on the origins of high-rise dwellings and on the history of the media in the home, both relying on a meticulous empirical analysis of the apartment buildings production throughout the twentieth century. For that matter a sample of the recent apartment building production in Belo Horizonte have been analyzed, reflecting on the effect of project decision on the possibilities of usage of space. As a result one has the evidence of the main technical and projectual factors that define the contemporary apartment, considering the flexibility potential of the built environment. This reflection makes it possible to review project criteria and eventually redesigning private space in high-rise dwellings, in order to help the real estate market production meet the users' demands

Study on Service Quality of and Users¡¦ Satisfaction with Nursing Homes for the Aged ¡V Old People¡¦s Apartments in Kaohsiung County

Chuang, Ming-Te 20 August 2001 (has links)
Study on Service Quality of and Users¡¦ Satisfaction with Nursing Homes for the Aged ¡V Old People¡¦s Apartments in Kaohsiung County Abstract Raising children as insurance against the insecurity of old age has been a deep-rooted concept of the Chinese people. Traditionally, care and nursing of the aged are mostly done in families. However, with the change of social and life styles, as well as the reduction of fertility rate, such kind of concept has been put to a severe test now. In the early stage, a nursing home was mainly the shelter for homeless, solitary and poor old people. The concept of social welfare still remains in the stage of providing relief. Therefore, the old people who lived in the nursing homes were labeled as poor. Besides, ¡§the standard, contents and methods of service provided by the nursing homes also make the general people to halt in hesitation.¡¨ In fact, in addition to physiological satisfaction, the aged will also pursue the psychological satisfaction, i.e., a living worthy of human dignity, at their old age. This is right the ultimate goal to promote the business of nursing homes. Owing to the increasing demand for care and nursing of the aged, the government also encourages the establishment of private nursing organizations for the aged. Hence, the fee-for-service private nursing organizations of ¡§service¡¨ nature emerge gradually, apart from the government-supported nursing organizations of ¡§relief¡¨ nature. The old people who live in such an organization become ¡§welfare consumers¡¨. In Kaohsiung County, the old people¡¦s apartments are run in a fee-for-service mode under the sponsorship of the government, but they have to be responsible for the profit and loss of the apartments by themselves. The purpose of this study is to know the service quality of nursing homes at present and the old people¡¦s satisfaction with the service they received. (1) To understand the service quality of the nursing homes in order to provide a basis of their management for the government. (2) To understand the users¡¦ satisfaction with nursing homes in order to meet the demands of the aged. (3) To discuss the relationship between service quality of the nursing homes and the user¡¦s satisfaction.

Smaller is better : barriers to building affordable multifamily housing at a neighborhood scale

Keane, Nora 04 December 2013 (has links)
Low- and moderate-income Americans rely on affordable housing. It is clear that affordable rental housing is needed, but much of what is getting built, especially in the high-growth West and South, gives rise to negative externalities based on the large number of units in the projects. This report looks at objections to large apartment complexes and makes the case for smaller-scale multifamily developments, studies how housing policy in the US has disadvantaged multifamily development, and investigates barriers to small-scale developments relating to mortgage markets, the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, and the models of nonprofit affordable housing providers. / text

An analysis of secondary suites as a policy instrument in the city of Edmonton

Gratton, Matthew C. 12 September 2011 (has links)
This practicum examines the role of secondary dwelling units (secondary suites), as employed by the City of Edmonton, in the implementation of affordable housing policy. It seeks to understand the context in which the City‘s secondary dwelling unit program was developed, the various components of the program, and the impacts of the program. A review of the literature on this topic, a review of key City documents, a review of permit and grant allocation data, a key informant interview, as well as a survey of targeted neighbourhood residents were used to inform this study. Results from the study suggest that while that the program has made a significant contribution to the creation of affordable housing stock in the city and is generally supported by residents, details of the program may not be well understood by the public. Finally, possible future directions for the program and for research are suggested.

Layers for communition: low-rise, high density apartments in-between urban and suburban

Lee, SeungJu 24 November 1998 (has links)
Housing is one of the most fundamental subjects of architecture, not just for the basic purpose of shelter, but for the place where vitality can be transcended to the people living in them. 'Housing' rather than 'house' marks the intersection between architecture and urban design and the simultaneous existence of the individual and collective. Housing is also a form of material culture. As such, it cannot be understood without studying the cultural and economic conditions of its production. - Rem Koolhaas, 'Conversations with students' With the gradual change in family structure, housing accommodations would be smaller as the family size reduces, however, common open space and active recreation of all types would be enlarged. This would be a greater opportunity to integrate urban with suburban environments - the town's cultural and employment opportunities would be within easy access to the countryside and to nature. "Architecture is an art filled with contradictions. The more we learned about these contradictions in architecture, the more they translate these contradictions into an antitheses; between discipline and freedom, between technology and environment, between modernity and tradition. But....discipline sets limits to freedom, yet it is also its container, the thing that gives it form. These two elements coexist and interact." - Herman Hertzberger, 'Lessons for students in Architecture' The meaning of space can be clarified as dualities; between public and private, light and shadow, positive and negative, horizontal and vertical, man-made and nature, and denotative and connotative. Space is transformed into characteristic place through these changes, layers and sequences of movement. It would undoubtedly guide urban growth toward a more humane living environment which can recover community space set against stereotypical architecture. / Master of Architecture

The In-between: Architectural Mediation Between Commerce and Residence

Tarel, Tracie 26 September 2002 (has links)
Architecture develops from both the art and science of construction. Therefore, structure influences the pursuit of architectural ideas. Devoid of ornamentation, common objects can be enhanced through improving function and articulating their structure. Quality of construction and material durability have an immediate impact on how a thing is perceived. A thing is built once, but observed, studied, and used for its entire existence. It is important to investigate today's building necessities, such as a door, a path, or a wall, to discover inherent opportunities in order to transcend these everyday things and create extraordinary architectural moments. Separating a thing from its general context draws attention to it or to some aspect of it being enhanced. Otherwise, an ordinary thing such as a door can be quite uneventful. But, a door encased in a vertical plane of wood offset from the remaining enclosure draws attention to the quality, texture, and color of the wood. In this thesis, the design of a multi-use, commercial and residential building, bridges between corresponding zoning districts. The project is used as a vehicle to explore the complexities and nuances involved in developing extraordinary architectural form using initially common conditions, local zoning laws, and standard construction techniques. / Master of Architecture
