Journey to healing : themes and stages in change for women survivors of abuse by intimate partnersAllain, Julia Anne 10 April 2008 (has links)
The experience of successfully ending a relationship with an abusive partner is seldom explored, although abuse has been experienced by 29% of married Canadian women (Johnson, 1996, cited in Morrow & Varcoe, 2000). This study used a phenomenological design and a critical social science approach to explore the lived experience of women who ended a relationship with an abusive partner. Seven in-depth interviews were analyzed, and encounters with social support from the justice system, counselling agencies, and transition houses were examined. A five-stage model to describe the change process emerged from the data. Metathemes illuminated important internal and external aspects of change during each stage. Childhood gender socialization influenced participants to stay in abusive relationships. Nevertheless, resistance to abuse was seen to have occurred from the beginning. Changing beliefs about gender roles and relationship expectations emerged as an important part of learning and influenced decision-making. Loss of hope and realization of harm led to a shift in decisional balance that culminated in determination to end the relationship. Simple goals evolved to become complex goals as change continued. Participants who attempted to understand their experiences reached a stage that included evolving and healing. Healing also involved a balanced lifestyle, in accordance with the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model. The model's terminology describes a woman in the successive stages of change as a learner, an actor, an evaluator, a survivor, and a thriver. The model is compared with the Transtheoretical Model of Change, and surprising reports of very low self-efficacy at the point of ending the relationship are discussed.

Die behoefte aan ondersteuning van vroue in landelike gebiede wat by intiemepaargeweld betrokke is : 'n ekologiese perspektiefVan Breda, Edna Elizabeth 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Social Work)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Intimate partner violence is world wide and in South Africa an increasing social problem that
leads to life-threatening history of injuries and psychosocial problems. Intimate partner violence
is a global phenomenon prevalent in all socio-economic, race, religion, cultural and geographical
boundaries. Although women with a lack or low income is more at risk of intimate partner
violence and this reinforces their dependency of the intimate partner violence relationship. The
largest percentage of South Africa’s poor population lives in rural areas that make them more
vulnerable for social problems because of their lack of adequate resources. Women in rural areas
involved with intimate partner violence are physically isolated from a supportive social network
and must travel far distances to gain access to formal support resources.
The goal of the study is to gain an understanding of the support needs of women in rural areas
that are involved in intimate partner violence from an ecological perspective. To achieve this
goal, the objectives are: to explain the nature, extent and origin of intimate partner violence as a
social problem; to discuss the relevance of the ecological perspective as a theoretical framework
regarding the analyses of intimate partner violence; to describe the support needs of women in
rural areas that is involved in intimate partner violence; to investigate the experience of women
in rural areas that is involved in intimate partner violence regarding the availability of support;
and to offer recommendations regarding the promotion of the support needs for women in rural
areas that is expose to intimate partner violence.
Combinations of a quantitative and qualitative research approach were used in the study. The
study further assumed an exploratory and descriptive research design due to the lack of
information on support that is available to women in rural areas that are involved in intimate
partner violence. A purposive sampling method was used to select the participants. Data was
gathered by means of a semi-structured questionnaire, which was administered during 20
individual interviews. This allowed for a holistic view of the participants beliefs about, or
perceptions of the topic. The design of the questionnaire was based on the information obtained
from the literature review.
The findings of the empirical investigation mainly confirmed the findings of the literature study
that those women in rural areas that are involved in intimate partner violence support needs, from multiple levels of the ecological perspective. This support entails both informal and formal
support resources which vary from concrete, informational to emotional support in order to cope
with stressful life situations.
The most important recommendations resulting from the study indicate that social workers must
use an ecological approach during service rendered to women in rural areas that are involved in
intimate partner violence. This approach can be used to identify and strengthen support resources
on a micro, meso, exo and macro system level.
The study further indicate that social workers must collaborate with different government sectors
such as health care, police and law enforcement in order to create a multi professional team that
focus on the social functioning of families and the community as a entity. Social workers that
render intervention services to women in rural areas that are exposed to intimate partner violence
should focus on all levels of social work intervention. The recommendation emphasises the
importance of women and the communities’ awareness regarding intimate partner violence to
promote women independency and to promote and facilitate support groups.
Vroue in landelike gebiede wat by intiemepaargeweld betrokke is,
wat nodig is vir vroue in landelike gebiede wat by intiemepaargeweld betrokke is, te omskryf;
betrokke is, toon.

Organizational Perceptions of Women's Vulnerability to Violence in the Wake of DisasterWilson, Jennifer L. (Jennifer Lyn) 08 1900 (has links)
Women as a group hold little power in the social system which increases women's vulnerability to domestic violence. According to Merton (1970), social problems may be revealed through the disaster recovery process. A coraHunity1s organizational response to social problems such as wife abuse depends upon organizational members' perceptions. The data suggest that organizational perceptions of domestic violence largely depend upon the setting or environment in which an organization exists and operates. A second factor that greatly determines an organization's perception of domestic violence after disaster is organizational type. Organizations which provide services to domestic violence victims pre-disaster are more likely to perceive domestic violence following disaster than organizations which do not provide domestic violence related services prior to disaster.

Health care for intimate partner violence : current standard of care and development of protocol managementJoyner, Kate 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil (Sociology and Social Anthropology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The World Health Organisation recognises intimate partner violence (IPV) to be of major
consequence to women’s mental and physical health, yet in South Africa it remains a
neglected area of care. Within a professional action research framework, this study
implemented a previously recommended South African protocol for the screening and holistic
management of IPV in women in order to test its feasibility and to adapt it for use in the
primary health care (PHC) sector of the Western Cape. It also aimed to identify the current
nature of care offered to female survivors of IPV. Thirdly, it aimed to learn from the process
of training and supporting (nurse) researchers who were new to the action research paradigm
and methodology.
Successfully implementing and evaluating a complex health intervention in the current PHC
scenario required a flexible methodology which could enable real engagement with, and a
creative response to, the issues as they emerged. Guided by the British Medical Research
Council’s framework for development and evaluation of randomised controlled trials for
complex health interventions (Medical Research Council, 2000, p.3), this study was
positioned within the modelling phase. Professional action research used a co-operative
inquiry group process as the overarching method with the usual cycles of action, observation,
reflection and planning. Altogether five co-researchers were involved in implementing the
protocol and were members of the inquiry group. A number of techniques were used to
observe and reflect on experience, including participant interviews, key informant interviews,
focus groups with health care providers at each site, quantitative data from the medical
records and protocol, field notes and academic literature.
Binne ‘n
professionele aksie-navorsingsraamwerk, implementeer hierdie studie ‘n voorheen aanbevole
2000, bl.3), was hierdie studie binne die modelleringsfase geposisioneer. Professionele aksienavorsing

Social welfare services offered at shelters to female victims of domestic violenceVan Zyl, Ann-Marie 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Social Work (Social Work))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / An exploratory and descriptive research design was selected together with a
combination of both a quantitative and qualitative research approach to obtain the
necessary information, insight and knowledge regarding the social welfare services
offered to female victims of domestic violence in shelters. The motivation for this
investigation stemmed from the lack of information on social welfare services offered
to these female victims. The researcher became aware of this lack of information due
to the fact that only limited studies and investigations had been done into the social
welfare services offered to female victims of domestic violence within South Africa.
The goal of this study is therefore to gain a better understanding of the social welfare
services offered to female victims of domestic violence in shelters in order to provide
recommendations to social service practitioners for the improvement of social welfare
services in such circumstances.
The literature study firstly focused on the theories, conceptualisation and dimensions
of domestic violence in order to gain an understanding and knowledge base of the
theories that describe domestic violence, concepts that provide an understanding of
the phenomenon of domestic violence as well the dimensions of domestic violence.
Furthermore, the literature study focuses on the policies, legislations and the
government’s commitment to address domestic violence in South Africa. The primary
focus of the literature study was to investigate the social welfare services that are
offered to female victims of domestic violence in shelters.
The researcher contacted the Department of Social Development of the Western
Cape in order to identify the shelter organisations that offer social welfare services to
female victims of domestic violence and finally a purposive sampling was done of ten
shelters in the Western Cape Metropole area which offer social welfare services to
female victims of domestic violence. A qualitative and quantitative investigation was
performed by means of conducting semi-structured interviews with the aid of an
interview guide. The results of the investigation mainly confirmed the findings of the literature study
that domestic violence is an inherent part of the life in South Africa, also that
domestic violence has a variety of causes and consequences and that social welfare
services offered to female victims of domestic violence are an important part of the
process of empowerment in shelters.
The recommendations were aimed at services in shelters and professional persons
involved in the rehabilitation and empowerment of abused women during their
accommodation in the shelters. The recommendations also included further research
to explore the impact of these social welfare services on female residents, and to
address the areas where social welfare services fall short in order to provide insight
into the development of other social welfare services that are needed by female
residents when entering a shelter.

Casework intervention for abused women in the Moses Kotane Local MunicipalityTwala, Thembi Maria Carol 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research investigates casework intervention for abused women in Moses Kotane
Local Municipality.
The purpose of this research is to present a theoretical and practical framework from a
casework perspective for dealing with abused women. The motivation for the study
was based on the need of social workers to have a framework when applying
casework during intervention with abused women. The framework will offer guidance
and will ensure that the service rendered to abused women is of a good quality.
The objectives of this study is to investigate the nature and extent of the abuse of
women in Moses Kotane Local Municipality, to explain the causes and consequences
of abuse, and to describe casework intervention strategies to address abuse of women.
The research covers the nature and prevalence of abuse of women as well as the
causes of abuse. The consequences of abuse of women are also outlined in the
research report.
A practice perspective, a theory and a model which can be applied during intervention
with abused women, is also included in the report. A practical framework is also
included with the help of literature reviewed.
The empirical research involved both qualitative and quantitative methods. This
section presents findings in the form of tables and figures and gives an analysis of the
findings. The findings were analyzed and compared with the findings from previous
studies undertaken by various authors. The findings can be used as a guideline by
social workers when applying casework during intervention with abused women.
Recommendations are also included in the report.
benut is.
outeurs onderneem is.
