Addressing issues of overcrowdedness in Eastern Cape Schools

Coetzee, Jacobus Petrus 11 1900 (has links)
Issues of overcrowdedness in Eastern Cape schools have become very prominent in the media. The qualitative research in this study reiterates its existence and its implications for both learners and teachers. A need exists to curb the declining schooling standards. Large-scale in-service teacher training in an immediate joint effort by the Education Department and the school is necessary to address these serious issues. Classroom situations with low pupil:teacher ratios, classroom atmospheres conducive to teaching and learning, and an improved quality of education should be strived for. The effective attainment of the ideals of outcomes-based education requires improved teacher management and leadership to better disciplined classes. The treatment of any backlogs and inequalities evident in overcrowded classes should aim mainly at the upliftment of disadvantaged learners, who are still suffering under the effects of the previous education dispensation. Relevant recommendations and a suggested model to rectify the situation are proposed. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Comparative Education)

Exploring the factors that affect academic achievement in grade 6 mathematics classrooms : a case of solving word problems / Exploring the factors that affect academic achievement in grade six mathematics classrooms

Kunene, Nothile Abrijard Tivelele 28 November 2014 (has links)
The study explored factors that affect academic achievements in Grade 6 mathematics classrooms in a case of solving word problems. It investigated empirically the causes and perceptions that lead to difficulties in solving word problems and eventually identified strategies for teaching them. The constructivist philosophy was adopted. The study used the mixed-method design with quantitative data complementing the qualitative information. In gathering data, a word problem task, questionnaires, a class observation schedule, face-to-face and focus group interviews were used, focusing on SFS (pseudo) school learners and their teachers as a convenient sample. Data analysis was done in an integrated fashion where concurrent triangulation was followed. The statistics results illustrate that factors such as English language proficiency adversely affect the academic achievements of Grade 6 learners when solving word problems. Reading instructions aloud repeatedly and explaining key mathematical concepts have emerged as key strategies in understanding and solving word problems in mathematics. / Inclusive Education / M. Ed. Language proficiency and reading ability as predictors of academic performance of Grade 7 English second language students in submersion contexts / Language proficiency and reading ability as predictors of academic performance of Grade seven English second language students in submersion contexts

Lendrum, Julie-Ann 11 1900 (has links)
In South Africa learners do not achieve as well as their international counterparts on tests of literacy, and language proficiency is often blamed for their poor academic performance. In this study, the relationship between English language proficiency, reading ability and the academic performance of Grade 7 students in submersion contexts was investigated using quantitative methods. The participants of the study were Grade 7 students based in a former Model C school in the South African city of Johannesburg. Their English language proficiency and reading ability were measured by means of The Proficiency test English Second Language: Intermediate level and the Neale Analysis of Reading Ability tests respectively. The students’ performance on these tests was correlated with the students’ average summative assessment results using the Pearson-product moment correlation. Results showed that both English language proficiency and reading ability were significantly correlated with academic performance, with language proficiency having the most robust correlation. These findings indicate that teachers should aim at improving language proficiency by using multilingual teaching strategies that support home language as a cognitive tool. / English Studies / M.A. (TESOL)

The experiences of teachers in addressing the academic wellness of juvenile offender learners

Manzini, Theresa Lydia Badiktsie 05 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the experiences of teachers in addressing the academic wellness of juvenile offender learners in the Correctional Centre. The main aim was to explore and understand the experiences of teachers in addressing the academic wellness of juvenile offender learners in a Correctional Centre School. In order to achieve this aim, the researcher used Bronfenbrenner’s eco-systemic theory (1977) and the Wellness theory by Hettler (1980) as a theoretical framework. The study was conducted at one of the Correctional Centres in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Purposive sampling was used, and two Correctional School teachers were selected. The study was qualitative in nature, embedded within an interpretive paradigm and used a phenomenological approach. After ethical measures were addressed, data were collected using the semi-structured interviews (Henning, Van Rensburg & Smit, 2004). The findings revealed that teachers implemented effective teaching strategies towards the enrichment of the academic wellness of the juvenile offenders in the Correctional Centre. Teachers indicated that there are barriers to learning in the Correctional School. Level of literacy and numeracy skills are low among juvenile offender learners. Some learners are not interested in learning and they have poor educational background. However, teachers revealed from the findings that indicate that effective schooling rehabilitates and could lower recidivism. An additional theme indicated that learning and teaching support materials (LTSM) are not adequately available. Moreover, teachers need empowerment and development in the Correctional setting and to be equipped or skilled adequately on necessary knowledge to handle special school environment and its challenges. Recommendation was made that to enhance and improve juvenile offender learners’ academic wellness, ample time spent during lock-up should instead be allocated to the Correctional School, be used efficiently and effectively. / Inclusive Education / M. The impact of grade 10 learners' behaviour on their academic performance in mathematics

Hagoramagara, Franco 10 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to identify types of behaviour manifested by learners during mathematics instruction, and the impact that this behaviour might have on the mathematics performance of learners. The study was conducted in Far East cluster of Johannesburg East District, in the province of Gauteng, South Africa. At the time of the study the Far East cluster of Johannesburg East District consisted of a population of seven public high schools, of which two schools were randomly sampled to participate in the study. Participants consisted of (n=10) Grade 10 mathematics learners, 2 mathematics teachers and 2 heads of mathematics departments (HODs). Data from learners were collected using a set of their assessment scores accumulated over a period of six months, that is, from January 2014 to June 2014 (Section 1.3.3). Also, semi-structured interviews were carried out with learners to determine types of classroom behaviour they perceived to influence their mathematical performance. The aim of documenting learners‟ assessment scores (document analysis) was to determine their average performance in Grade 10 mathematics over a stipulated period. Teachers and HODs completed questionnaires to identify types of classroom behaviour that learners manifested during mathematics instruction. The study followed a qualitative approach with phenomenology research design (Section 3.2). The study identified several types of classroom behaviour that characterized mathematics instruction in both schools, such as making noise and not doing classwork and homework activities. In addition, the study established that forms of behavioural patterns that are manifested by learners during a mathematics instruction influenced their performance in the subject. Huitt‟s (1997) model was used to conceptualize and interpret the results. / Mathematics Education / M. Ed. (Mathematics Education)

Anxiety and lack of motivation as factors affecting success rates in bridging mathematics

Sofowora, Samson Oluwaseun 11 1900 (has links)
The aversion to the study of mathematics and the resultant poor performance by students generally cannot be overemphasized and this still poses a great threat to the needed skills in the science, technology and commerce sector in South Africa. This study therefore tends to explore the importance of Mathematics to students and the economy globally by focusing on which contributive psychological factors are responsible for low performance in mathematics among Pre degree students as a case study. In addition also, the teaching and learning strategies used in the classroom that will help curb mathematics anxiety among students will be looked into. Furthermore a test to ascertain if poor teaching methods or pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics’ teachers influence anxiety thereby leading to poor performance in mathematics will be carried out. By utilizing a mixed method approach, an integration of the qualitative and quantitative approaches, the study attempted to provide an insight into the poor performances in Mathematics by Pre-degree students in a Private Institution of higher learning by exploring the following affective domains: 1) Anxiety 2) Motivation (lack of either the Internal & External type) and also considering the teaching strategies adopted on the other hand. The theoretical framework applied to this study was three fold in nature, namely, to investigate the nature of the relationship between mathematics anxiety and mathematics achievement on one side, secondly, to investigate the nature of the relationship between motivational orientation and mathematics achievement on the other side. Finally, it will investigate the relationship between teaching methods and mathematics achievement. The major findings that emanated from this study were as follows: there is a strong impact of the affective factors (anxiety, beliefs, emotions and motivation) on mathematics learning and success rates among Pre-degree students in South Africa. This study shows the importance of affective factors (such as anxiety, negative attitude, lack of motivation) in determining the success and or failure of mathematics learning, with the intention of promoting and encouraging positive traits, attitudes and beliefs in the students. The issue of teaching strategies was however not of a strong impact on success rates in bridging mathematics among the students as their lecturers were commended to be on top of their subject, but only that strategies to teaching mathematics must be dynamic, effective and varied as much as possible to meeting the students diverse learning styles . / Mathematics Education / M. The relationship between sense of coherence, time-to-degree and academic achievement in the non-traditional student at a distance learning institutions

Ley, Louise 17 March 2014 (has links)
Stress in non-traditional students may be associated with psychological stress which could adversely affect academic and job performance. Sense of Coherence a resource enabling people to manage tension in a health promoting could positively affect performance. The objective of this study was to investigate how SOC, time-to-degree and academic achievement influence each other in non-traditional students. A cross-sectional survey design was used in this descriptive study. The convenience sample consisted of three hundred and sixty six non-traditional students at a distance learning institution in South Africa. Secondary data for this research came from students who had completed the short form OLQ-13 as part of the official study material for a research module at a particular distance education institution. No theoretical relationship could be found between SOC, time-to-degree and academic achievement. The empirical relationship proved that SOC could not be used as a predictor of time-to-degree and academic achievement of the particular sample under investigation. / Industrial & Organisational Psychology / M. A phenomenological study of the instructional leadership practices of school principals in three high-performing independent schools in Gauteng

Kathrada, Zerina 15 August 2019 (has links)
The core role and responsibility of the school principal is to be an instructional leader. The principal sets the tone in terms of teaching and learning in the school. In this study I focus on school principals at independent schools in Gauteng and explore their instructional leadership practices. To understand these practices I drew on Weber’s instructional leadership model and distributed leadership. In this interpretive, qualitative, phenomenological study I purposively sampled three independent schools in the Gauteng province based on exceptional academic achievement. I selected their school principals as participants. Data was generated using semi-structured interviews, collage inquiry and artefact inquiry. The findings indicate that the day-to-day instructional leadership practices of the participants are quite expansive and are geared towards ensuring quality in teaching and learning. Furthermore, they receive the requisite support from stakeholders and mediate the challenges they experience in their instructional leadership in multiple ways. / Educational Management and Leadership / M. The academic performance of orphaned learners at high schools in Shamavunga Circuit, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Ringani, Tsakani Gladys 06 1900 (has links)
The study investigated the academic performance of orphaned secondary school learners between the ages of thirteen and eighteen in the Shamavunga Circuit. The study used the qualitative method. This included the sampling of ten orphaned learners from one school in the Shamavunga Circuit. The qualitative component of the study involved sampling three educators and three guardians of orphaned learners from one secondary school in the Shamavunga Circuit. This study was aimed at investigation the perceptions of educators and learners of the academic performance of orphaned learners at secondary schools in the Shamavunga Circuit, Limpopo province. The study found that the educators were of the view that, as compared to their counterparts, orphaned learners are more likely to display unruly behaviour, a lack of concentration and an inability to complete their written schoolwork. The educators also suggested that because the majority of orphaned learners were heading their families (child-headed), there was no one to monitor and supervise them. On the other hand, it has been suggested that the majority of orphaned learners were staying with their caregivers/guardians. The study also revealed that the educators were not well trained in terms of dealing with orphaned learners. In other words they lacked the proper skills and knowledge required to deal with orphaned learners. On the other words, the orphaned learners were of the view that some of the educators were not treating them well as they called them names and they were also not providing them with the support that they should have been receiving from adults who should be playing a parental role in their lives. Furthermore, some of the orphaned learners suggested that the caregivers (guardians) with whom they lived misused their grants for their own benefit. The study also revealed that the guardians of orphaned learners were often not coping and were uneducated. Accordingly, they were unable to adequately meet the needs of these orphaned learners. In conclusion, the study recommended interventions at the school, government as well as the community levels. For example, it is suggested that grandparents (guardians) be provided with support as they were becoming exhausted as a result of having to look after the orphaned learners. It is also suggested that the government build more drop-in centres and orphanages and also provide training for the educators who have to deal with the orphaned learners. / Educational Leadership and Management / M.
