Descriptive Analysis of the Association for the Study of Higher Education Dissertation of the Year Award Winning Dissertation and Recipients, 1979 - 2004

Powell, Monica S. 12 1900 (has links)
This mixed-methodology study examined a set of award winning dissertations to determine what factors may have led to their receiving recognition by the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). The study addressed seven specific research questions which were answered via two different research designs: 1) a survey administered to the 27 recipients of the dissertation award, and 2) through the qualitative assessment of a sample of the winning dissertations. The quantitative survey was distributed to recipients of the Association for the Study of Higher Education Dissertation of the Year award from 1979 through 2004. The survey collected specific information on the personal attributes and characteristics of the award recipients, descriptive information about the award winning dissertations, information concerning the quality of the winner's doctoral experiences, the quality of their relationship with their dissertations advisors and the progression of their careers after winning the award. The qualitative assessment involved applying a set of evaluative questions provided by Gall, Gall and Borg to describe a sample of the award winning documents. The results indicated that recipients of the ASHE award were not representative of education doctoral students as indicated by 2004 data. The results of the study also indicated that, as a group, these dissertations winners were full-time doctoral students, likely recipients of some form of financial assistance (assistantship and fellowships) and were able to complete their dissertations and degrees in substantially less time than typical education doctoral students. The findings also suggest that Gall, Gall and Borg's procedure for evaluating educational research can be used to assess doctoral dissertations.

A Knowledge Map-Centric Feedback-Based Approach to Information Modeling and Academic Assessment

Castles, Ricky Thomas 24 February 2010 (has links)
The structure of education has changed dramatically in the last few decades. Despite major changes in how students are learning, there has not been as dramatic of a shift in how student learning is assessed. Standard letter grades are still the paradigm for evaluating a student's mastery of course content and the grade point average is still one of the largest determining factors in judging a graduate's academic aptitude. This research presents a modern approach to modeling knowledge and evaluating students. Based upon the model of a closed-loop feedback controller it considers education as a system with an instructor determining the set of knowledge he or she wishes to impart to students, the instruction method as a transfer function, and evaluation methods serving as sensors to provide feedback determining the subset of the information students have learned. This method uses comprehensive concept maps to depict all of the concepts and relationships an educator intends to cover and student maps to depict the subset of knowledge that students have mastered. Concept inventories are used as an assessment tool to determine, at the conceptual level, what students have learned. Each question in the concept inventory is coupled with one or more components of a comprehensive concept map and based upon the answers students give to concept inventory questions those components may or may not appear in a student's knowledge map. The level of knowledge a student demonstrates of each concept and relationship is presented in his or her student map using a color scheme tied to the levels of learning in Bloom's taxonomy. Topological principles are used to establish metrics to quantify the distance between two students' knowledge maps and the distance between a student's knowledge map and the corresponding comprehensive concept map. A method is also developed for forming aggregate maps representative of the knowledge of a group of students. Aggregate maps can be formed for entire classes of students or based upon various demographics including race and gender. XML schemas have been used throughout this research to encapsulate the information in both comprehensive maps and student maps and to store correlations between concept inventory questions and corresponding comprehensive map components. Three software packages have been developed to store concept inventories into an XML Schema, to process student responses to concept inventory questions and generate student maps as a result, and to generate aggregate maps. The methods presented herein have been applied to two learning units that are part of two freshman engineering courses at Virginia Tech. Example student maps and aggregate maps are included for these course units. / Ph. D.

Um modelo de pontuação na busca de competências acadêmicas de pesquisadores / A score-based model for assessing academic researchers competences

Rech, Rodrigo Octavio January 2007 (has links)
The present research describes a model that aims finding out and scoring academic researchers skills or competences based on the combination of quantitative indicators that make it possible to measure the production of academic scientists. A special feature concerning our model is the inclusion of quantitative indicators related to the importance of the researchers’ bibliographic production. These indicators allow the evaluation of the production considering both the outcome it has had in the academic community, and the quality level of the place it was published. The study also presents a flexible and extensible architecture specification based on techniques of web data extraction, and on approximate data matching (which is carried out through similarity functions). The architecture has been implemented in a web system whose main feature relies on the integration of several open-source technologies. The developed system allows any researcher to evaluate his/her own scientific production in quantitative terms, automating as well the so many aspects regarding the evaluation task, by making it easier to obtain the indicators and to integrate the different information databases, for instance.

It analyses tools such as norms and guides, offered to students in order to prepare their works, and also the role of librarians in this environment. To understand the behavior of scientists it was made a qualitative research through interviews, that were recorded. The answers were arranged in categories in order to apply content analysis method to get the results. It was observed that demands are changing in face of the academic evaluation criteria which lead researchers to use patterns of international scientific journals, instead of national standards of academic publication.
