The Development of a Management Training Program Using Adlerian Theoretical Principles

This study was designed to determine whether participation in an eight hour training program based on Adlerian theoretical principles would influence managerial attitudes. The effects of the training curriculum on three attitudinal dimensions were investigated: leadership style, acceptance of self and others and level of dogmatism. It was hypothesized that Adlerian training would increase the development of managerial human relations competence. Eighty-one managers participated in the study. The experimental group, comprised of 40 line managers, received eight hours of Adlerian training conducted in two one-half day sessions. The training was both didactic and experiential in content and contained modules on lifestyles/management styles, conflict resolution, effective communication strategies and understanding personality dynamics. The control group, comprised of 41 managers, did not receive training but participated in the pre-testing and post-testing process. Managers completed The Leadership Opinion Questionnaire, The Acceptance of Self and Others Questionnaire, and The Rokeach Dogmatism Scale, prior to the first training session and again two weeks after the final training session. A one-way analysis of covariance revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups on both the Consideration and Structure dimensions of the Leadership Opinion Questionnaire. This suggests that managers in the experimental group demonstrated a more participative and less authoritarian management style two weeks after training was completed. No significant differences were found between the two groups on managers' level of dogmatism or acceptance of self and others.

Dos blaybt tsu zen : le journal yiddish de Montréal, Der Keneder Odler, Maurice Duplessis et le Québec, 1936-37

Durant l'entre-deux-guerres, la communauté juive de Montréal, forte d'une vague d'immigration importante qui s'est déroulée quelques années auparavant, s'est dotée de plusieurs institutions, dont un quotidien de langue yiddish, Der Keneder Odler (L'Aigle canadien). Ce journal, fondé en 1907, qui atteint son apogée durant les années 1930, devient une référence pour les Juifs immigrants de la ville qui cherchent à appréhender leur nouvelle société d'accueil. L'Odler joue en effet un rôle essentiel dans l'intégration socio-économique des yiddishophones de Montréal et il reflète aussi la structure organisationnelle juive dans la ville. Au même moment, des changements politiques importants se produisent au Québec, dont la fin de 39 ans de gouvernance sous le Parti libéral de la province au profit de l'Union nationale et de son chef, Maurice Duplessis, qui remporte l'élection provinciale du mois d'août 1936. Dans cette thèse, nous considérons la perception de l'équipe éditoriale de l'Odler envers ce changement politique de grande ampleur. Notre hypothèse de base est qu'en examinant les éditoriaux du Keneder Odler durant la première année de Duplessis à la tête de la province, nous serons en mesure de mettre en lumière les particularités idéologiques de la communauté juive immigrante, ainsi que sa perception unique de la politique au Québec et des relations entre Juifs et Canadiens français qui en découlent. Les Juifs de Montréal sont en effet confrontés à une situation politique et culturelle exceptionnelle en Amérique du Nord et au Canada, du fait de la présence dans la province de deux groupes majoritaires en situation de tension, soit les Canadiens français catholiques et les anglophones protestants. Les Juifs yiddishophones représentent la première minorité d'envergure à s'établir dans la métropole canadienne à n'être ni chrétiens ni anglophone ou francophone, et ils développent conséquemment une perspective vastement différente de leurs concitoyens et s'intéressent à des enjeux différents. Le changement politique dans la province, de pair avec la montée généralisée du fascisme, du nazisme et de l'antisémitisme dans le monde occidental durant les années 1930, représente un contexte pour analyser le discours éditorial du Keneder Odler, articulé par les membres d'une minorité culturelle et religieuse en voie d'intégration à la vie politique, sociale et culturelle de Montréal. La question se pose donc en ce qui concerne la perception de Duplessis de la part des éditorialistes du Keneder Odler. La position du journal envers Duplessis se caractérise-t-elle par un rejet ou une opposition, ou plutôt par une acceptation ou une perception positive? En procédant à une analyse en deux partie, soit statistique, sur quatorze mois de juillet 1936 à août 1937, et discursive pour ce qui est du contenu des éditoriaux portant sur Duplessis et la politique québécoise, nous pouvons soutenir que la perception que l'équipe éditoriale du Keneder Odler a du premier ministre unioniste est neutre, sinon positive à l'occasion. Les inquiétudes des éditorialistes se concentrent davantage sur les individus entourant le premier ministre que sur Duplessis lui-même. Il apparait donc que la position de l'Odler envers Duplessis est caractérisée par un processus de normalisation.

Adult education and the social economy : rethinking the communitarian pedagogy of Watson Thomson

The goal of this thesis is to analyze the philosophy and pedagogy of an almost forgotten figure in Saskatchewan history, whose work has had a lasting impact on the theory and practice of adult education. Watson Thomson, who was appointed as director of the Adult Education Division (AED) by the newly elected CCF government of Tommy Douglas in 1944, initiated an ambitious program designed to animate the citizenry of Saskatchewan, bring a variety of educational services to the common person, and develop co-operative and community enterprises throughout the province. Thomsons work is significant for a number of reasons. First, I compare and contrast it with the pedagogy of Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire. Second, I show that it was influenced by the humanistic philosophy of Personalism, especially that of Emmanuel Mounier. Third, and perhaps most importantly, Watsons philosophy embodies insights from the depth psychology of Alfred Adler enabling him to advocate a distinctive, dialogical pedagogy. Fourth, his influence as director of the AED was considerable as can be gauged from the fact that within one year of its formation, the division had organized over 500 study-action groups and more than 100 cooperative enterprises. Fifth, Watsons educational achievements are important not only for historical reasons but as a model for the development of social economy enterprises today, as evidence from a recent UNESCO report shows. The thesis uses an interdisciplinary approach of intellectual biography, historical documentation, and philosophical and psychological analysis in order to establish a comprehensive account of the theory and practice of this important figure.

Disertacijoje nagrinėjamas Individualiosios psichologijos teoriniu požiūriu pagrįstos tėvų mokymo programos STEP (angl. Systematic Training for Effective Parenting; Dinkmeyer, McKay, Dinkmeyer, 1997) efektyvumas. Mokymo efektyvumo rodikliais pasirinkti auklėjimo stiliaus ir suvokimo apie vaiko elgesį bei tėvų žinių apie auklėjimą pokyčiai. Darbe siekiama išsiaiškinti, ar grupių dalyvių ir vadovų sociodemografinės charakteristikos ir/ ar dalyvavimo STEP programoje veiksniai yra susiję su tėvų mokymo efektyvumu. Taip pat keliama prielaida, kad STEP programos efektyvumui įtakos turi ir grupių dalyvių ir vadovų gyvenimo stilius pagal A. Adler. Empirinėje darbo dalyje pristatomi 2011-2012 m. atlikto trijų etapų tyrimo rezultatai. Apibendrinus tyrimo duomenis nustatyta, kad STEP programa yra efektyvi siekiant suteikti tėvams žinių apie vaiko auklėjimą, skatinant retesnį motinų autoritarinio ir viską leidžiančio auklėjimo stilių naudojimą ir vaiko elgesio kaip mažiau nepriimtino suvokimą. Poveikis išlieka stabilus 3-4 mėn. laikotarpiu. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad motinų amžius, išsilavinimas, gimimo eiliškumas, tikslinio vaiko gimimo eiliškumas ir motinų dalyvavimas su partneriu bei programos namų darbų atlikimo dažnumas yra susiję su STEP programos efektyvumu. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The doctoral dissertation aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the Adlerian parent education program STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting; Dinkmeyer, McKay, Dinkmeyer, 1997). Changes in parenting style and parental perception of child‘s behavior as well as knowledge on parenting were measured as indicators of education efficacy. The effect of various program participant- and leader-related characteristics and participation in the program factors for these changes were explored. The significance of Adlerian lifestyle dynamics as reflected in lifestyle themes for predicting the education efficacy were also assessed. In the empirical section of the dissertation, the results of the research study with pre-, post-test assessment and follow-up carried out in 2011-2012 are presented. The findings showed that the STEP program is efficacious for increasing knowledge on parenting, decreasing maternal authoritarian and permissive parenting style and maternal perception of the target child’s emotionally charging behavior. The follow-up assessment three to four months later indicated that the changes were stable. The results also indicated that maternal age, education, birth order position, target child’s birth order position and participation with a partner, homework assignments completed are significant for the efficacy of the STEP program with mothers. A psychosocial perspective on the personality development of the serial murderer

The phenomenon of serial murder is a crime characterised by a paucity of scientific information and an excess of popularised fictional material, contributing to the existence of inaccurate perceptions of serial murder. Although serial murder has been committed since the fourteenth century it only gained notoriety with the intense media coverage of the Jack the Ripper case in 1888. One of the most important reasons for society’s morbid fascination with this phenomenon is because of the view of it as a “motiveless crime”. Available literature shows that research undertaken to determine the origin and the motivation behind serial homicide generally focuses on singular aspects of serial murder. In most cases the research is directed by theories of the psychoanalytic school, most notably that of Sigmund Freud. Another research approach is to develop models and methods for classifying serial killers. Despite the value of these models and the research that has been done the information they can provide is limited. In most cases the research and the models focus on singular aspects associated with the development of serial murderers, for example, the internal conflicts experienced by the child. The goal of this study is to determine which internal and external factors influence the personality development of the serial murderer. The research therefore focuses on how these factors were internalised and expressed behaviourally by the individual. To achieve this the psychosocial perspective, which consisted of three psychological theories, was used to determine the role of both internal and external influences in the personality development of the individual. The method of research deemed most suitable to undertake the study is the qualitative approach, and more specifically the explanatory case study method. The data for the research was obtained by using a semi-structured interview and relevant documentation concerning each of the two case studies. Seven research questions were formulated to find answers to the personality development of the serial murderer and his behaviour. The questions were also formulated to ensure the validity of the data and to substantiate the findings based on the psychosocial perspective. The psychosocial perspective was used to analyse the two case studies and to compile a detailed explanation for the personality development and the personality structure of each of the serial murderers. The three psychological theories were combined in such a way that it could show the influence of internal and external factors on the personality development. This included the influence of the family atmosphere as well as behaviour and personality types that developed. In conclusion the extent to which answers were obtained regarding the seven research questions and the extent to which the aim of the research has been achieved is highlighted. Winston Churchill’s ‘Black Dog’: a psychobiographical case study for depressive realism

Text in English / This qualitative psychobiographical study sets out to explore and describe the life of Sir Winston Churchill within the context of his lifelong experience with depression, his ‘Black Dog’. The aim of the research is to present a case for depressive realism with Churchill as the single case study. The reconstruction of Churchill’s life as a psychological narrative is contextualised within the theoretical framework of Alfred Adler’s Theory of Individual Psychology. Data was collated via biographical and life history material. Data was analysed by means of thematic analysis. Data trustworthiness and ethical considerations were adhered to. The findings of this study reveal that Churchill’s depression had positive gains of him striving to contribute to society, potentially demonstrating that depressive realism exists as a side-effect of depression. The significance of which, conceivably substantiates the idea that positive aspects of depression do exist, enabling a potentially more encouraging and constructive outlook for individuals suffering from depression. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)
