A select study of Texas Principal Preparation Programs and their Relationship to Adult Learning and the Professional Leadership Responsibilities of their GraduatesStyles, Delesa Haynes 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between principal preparation programs in Texas and professional leadership practices and responsibilities based on Mid-continent Research for Educational and Learning's (McREL) 21 leadership responsibilities. The study also examined the relationship between Texas principal preparation programs and Knowles's principles of adult learning. Through an online survey, the study solicited practicing principals' perceptions as to whether McREL's 21 leadership responsibilities and Knowles's principles of adult learning were included in their principal preparation programs. Quantitative findings indicated there were no significant differences between principals' perceptions of their principal preparation programs and the university/certification program in which they obtained their principal certification. Additionally, there were no significant differences between principals' perceptions of their programs and the year their principal certification was completed. There were also no significant differences between principals' perceptions of their programs and the geographic location of the school district in which they were presently employed. However, the study found there were significant differences in two areas of leadership responsibilities when comparisons were generated between principals who were fully certified before assuming the role of principal and those who were not fully certified: 1) ideas/beliefs and 2) optimizer. Principals who had not completed their certification program scored the two areas higher than those who had. The study also utilized qualitative methodology through in-depth interviews with principal program coordinators and practicing principals. Program coordinators and principals revealed leadership responsibilities of "communication," "culture," and "visibility" as areas of emphasis and importance in their programs. The need for more emphasis in the area of "discipline" was communicated mutually by program coordinators and principals. Principals stated areas of "knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment" and "resources" as leadership responsibilities needing more emphasis. Both program coordinators and principals concurred principal preparation programs should have more emphasis and importance placed upon Knowles's principles of adult learning.

Adult Learning-Focused Professional Development for Dental Hygiene Clinical InstructorsMcGuinness, Meghan Ann 01 January 2016 (has links)
At a dental hygiene program within a community college in New York State, clinical instructors are hired based on their expertise as practitioners. Most clinical instructors lack a background in adult learning theory and practice, which is an issue because their students are adult learners whose average age is 26. The instructors' lack of knowledge in this area challenges their effectiveness. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore dental hygiene instructors' views about what kind of professional development offerings related to adult learning might help improve their teaching effectiveness. The conceptual framework for this project study was Lave and Wenger's situated learning theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 part-time clinical instructors from the same academic department. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Five themes emerged from data analysis: participants' commitment to teaching, experience with students' attitudes, desire for communication, satisfaction with students' successes, and need for professional development. These findings led to the design of a professional development program that includes content on behaviorism, humanism, social cognitive theory, cognitivism, constructivism, and experiential learning theory. The goals of the program include providing clinical instructors with a background in adult learning theory and identifying ways to implement adult learning theory into clinical instruction. In potentially improving the teaching effectiveness of clinical instructors, this study may result in the better preparation of dental hygiene students and, ultimately, lead to improved patient care.

Quality assurance of continuing professional development programmes for language teachersMlombo, Samson January 2013 (has links)
There seems to be a lack of synchronisation between the acquisition of skills, knowledge, values, teaching techniques, and so forth from professional learning interventions and the application thereof in practice by teachers in general and language teachers in particular. Those charged with ensuring that teachers‟ development needs, in terms of Collective Agreement 8 of 2003 (DoE, 2003), receive attention, seem to be complying with that prerequisite without establishing whether such interventions really do address the need for development.
This study focuses on the quality assurance of workshops meant to address the professional development needs of language teachers. This was explored in terms of learning theories informing methods used when facilitating professional development workshops for teachers and the assessment of teachers during the workshops, including evaluation of the workshops themselves and the quality assurance of those workshops.
The study has found, among others, that the methods used during facilitation are not sourced from a variety of professional learning theories, including different learning styles that accommodate teachers who learn differently from others; a variety of assessment methods is not used to assess language teachers during the workshop sessions and quality assurance of the workshops internally and externally scarcely takes place. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2013 / Science, Mathematics and Technology Education / unrestricted

Access to safe water and improved sanitation remains threatened by the ever increasing
demand in urbanised cities of the world. Adequate management of this problem could
not be achieved through technical and regulatory methods alone. A human values-based
education approach, namely the Human Values Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Education (HVWSHE) programme, was considered a suitable intervention strategy to
bring about the desired changes in attitude and behaviour by the water users.
This research involves an empirical case study approach that explores the experiences
of Laotian teachers as adult learners of the HVWSHE intervention as well as a literature
study on adult education, adult learning facilitation, human values-based education and
teacher beliefs. Focus group meetings, lesson observations, participant observation,
field notes and a researcher journal was used to collect data.
This study revealed that the HVWSHE training programme had a positive effect on the
adult learners’ attitude and behaviour towards a better water-use and sanitation-friendly
