Creation and evaluation of a web-based learning and discussion tool for elementary school teachers of students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in Nova Scotia

Barnett, Brittany 29 July 2010 (has links)
ADHD is one of the most common childhood psychiatric disorders, with symptoms that are frequently displayed in the school environment. Past studies have measured teachers’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours towards ADHD, but very few studies have aimed to change teachers’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviour through the implementation of an intervention. The goal of the present study was to determine if a web-based medium is an effective tool for supporting knowledge, attitude, and behaviour change in teachers of elementary school children with ADHD. Teachers (n = 20) from Nova Scotia were recruited through word of mouth. Of these participants, 19 completed a 7-week intervention that consisted of presentations, web-links and discussion board activities related to different aspects of ADHD. Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour were measured pre- and post-intervention. Teachers’ knowledge improved from pre- to post-intervention (p = 0.03). In terms of attitudes, although there was no change on the overall measure of attitude, there was a significant change on the Lack of Control (p = 0.001) and Perceived Competence (p = 0.000) subscales. A measure of teacher behaviour toward ADHD did not significantly change. Participants agreed that the content was presented in a way that was usable and easy to understand, the links and discussion board functions were useful, and they learned something new from each of the sessions. The study demonstrated that a web-based medium is a useful tool for knowledge creation and translation and has potential as a means of providing professional development to teachers about ADHD.

Manguezal do estuÃrio Barra Grande em IcapuÃ-CE: da degradaÃÃo ao processo de recuperaÃÃo e mudanÃa de atitude / Great mangrove estuary bar Icapui -CE : degradation to the recovery process and attitude change

Josà de Arimatea da Silva 12 July 2012 (has links)
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / The research conducted in Barra Grande, Icapuà â CE analyzed in a systematic way the geo environmental aspects of Barra Grande estuary with emphasis on mangrove and other coastal systems associated with it. The methodological foundations were related to the definition of the dynamic processes by identifying flows of matter and energy of the geo environmental diagnosis to highlight the importance of the mangrove estuary and in the maintenance of other coastal ecosystems and biodiversity. In this process, a space-time analysis was made through the preparation of thematic maps and charts showing the occupation of mangrove by economic activities generating impacts (salt, fish and shrimp) that led to environmental degradation and impairment of the ecosystem and its biodiversity. We also analyzed the social mobilization initiatives and environmental education process that arose from the joints of youth groups and NGOs that triggered political and environmental movements in Icapuà generators of change of attitude toward the use and conservation of mangroves. Also noteworthy is the implementation of projects for the rehabilitation of degraded areas and conservation of the wetland, identified and analyzed to provide data for interpreting the potential for social mobilization for the conservation of lowland environmental systems under study. Finally, the research allowed the development of a proposed environmental zoning of the estuary and mangrove swamp, with reference to the demarcation proposed by the Municipal Law No. 298/2000 which established the Environmental Protection Area (EPA) of Barra Grande / A pesquisa realizada na Barra Grande no municÃpio de IcapuÃ-CE, analisou deforma sistÃmica os aspectos geoambientais do estuÃrio Barra Grande com Ãnfase no manguezal e os demais sistemas costeiros associados.

The Effect Of Conceptual Change Approach On Students&amp / #8217 / Understanding Of Solubility Equilibrium Concept

Onder, Ismail 01 June 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The main purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of instructions one based on conceptual change approach and the other based on traditional chemistry instruction on tenth grade high school students&amp / #8217 / understanding of solubility equilibrium concept. In addition, students&amp / #8217 / attitudes toward chemistry as a school subject and toward conceptual change texts were investigated. Moreover, students&amp / #8217 / science process skills were also investigated. 125 tenth grade students from four classes of a chemistry course taught by three teachers in Kocatepe Mimar Kemal High School in 2004-2005 spring semesters were enrolled in the study. Quasi-experimental research design where intact groups were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, was applied since it was difficult to arrange students randomly to experimental and control groups. Students in experimental group instructed by conceptual change approach in which conceptual change texts were used. On the other hand, in control group students were instructed by traditionally designed chemistry instruction. Solution concept test was administered as a pre test before the study to all groups. In addition, science process skill test and attitude scale toward chemistry as a school subject were also administered to students before the study. Solubility equilibrium concept test was administered as a post test to all groups. Moreover, each group also received attitude scale toward chemistry after the treatment and the students in experimental group also received attitude scale toward conceptual change texts after the treatment. The hypotheses were tested by using correlation analysis, t-test, ANOVA and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The results indicated that instruction based on conceptual change approach caused significantly better acquisition of concepts related to solubility equilibrium than the traditionally designed chemistry instruction. In addition, no significant difference was found between experimental group and control group students with respect to attitudes toward chemistry as a school subject. However, significant mean difference was found between male and female students with respect to both their attitudes toward chemistry and their attitudes toward CCTs. Moreover, no relationship was obtained between attitudes toward CCTs and understanding of solubility equilibrium concept. In addition, students&amp / #8217 / science process skills and prior achievements were strong predictor of understanding of concepts related to solubility equilibrium. On the other hand, no significant effect of interaction between gender difference and treatment with respect to both students&amp / #8217 / understanding of solubility equilibrium concept and their attitudes toward chemistry as a school subject was found. Results obtained revealed that students have several misconceptions that hinder learning, related to solubility equilibrium concept. Therefore, it is important to find ways for remediation of those misconceptions. Therefore, the effectiveness of instruction based on CCA in which CCTs were used in this study on remediation of misconceptions and enhancing understanding of solubility equilibrium concept compared to instruction based on traditional methods was investigated and instruction based on CCA was found more effective.

Dissonance cognitive et transformation de la représentation sociale du sport : effets du changement de la signification d'un élément central sur les attitudes et les comportements / Cognitive dissonance and dynamics within the social representation of sport : effects modification of a central element signification on attitudes and behaviours

Bert, Nicolas 21 November 2016 (has links)
The theory of commitment (Joule & Beauvois, 1998 ; Kiesler, 1971), combined with thetheory of cognitive dissonance (Festinger, 1957 ; Fointiat, Girandola, & Gosling, 2013),provides an experimental framework of observation and understanding of some social practiceeffects on the social representation dynamics (Abric, 1994 ; Flament, 1994 ; Guimelli, 1989).This work follows on from the research led in the area of the effects of forced doublecompliance (Joule, 1991) on the transformation of social representations (Renard, Bonardi,Roussiau, & Girandola, 2007). The aim of this thesis is more precisely to determine what typesof modification within the social representation of sport among nonathletic students are likelyto produce an impact on attitudes and behaviours, and to see whether those changes originatefrom some dissonance reduction processes. If the structural transformation of sport socialrepresentation produces an evolution on short-term attitudes, it seems that the modification ofa central element signification causes long-term attitudinal and behavioural changes. Thestudents who fulfilled two acts in a context of commitment (ie, free- choice) declare themselvesmore favorable and practise more sport than the participants in the control condition. Aninterpretation in terms of rationalisation is put forward.

Experiences of Laotian teachers of the Human Values Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education training programme

Padayachee, Silverani 01 1900 (has links)
Access to safe water and improved sanitation remains threatened by the ever increasing demand in urbanised cities of the world. Adequate management of this problem could not be achieved through technical and regulatory methods alone. A human values-based education approach, namely the Human Values Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (HVWSHE) programme, was considered a suitable intervention strategy to bring about the desired changes in attitude and behaviour by the water users. This research involves an empirical case study approach that explores the experiences of Laotian teachers as adult learners of the HVWSHE intervention as well as a literature study on adult education, adult learning facilitation, human values-based education and teacher beliefs. Focus group meetings, lesson observations, participant observation, field notes and a researcher journal was used to collect data. This study revealed that the HVWSHE training programme had a positive effect on the adult learners’ attitude and behaviour towards a better water-use and sanitation-friendly ethic. / Educational Studies / M. Investigating media’s change of attitude towards lobbyism in Sweden : A quantitative content analysis study between the years 1970-2014 and based on theories from the disciplines of politicalscience and sociology

Sirafi, Ziad January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine why the media has a more negative attitude towards lobbyism in 2014 compared to earlier years since the 1970s in Sweden. This study examines first if a change of attitude has occurred between the given years and whether the attitude is more positive, negative or neutral towards lobbyism in recent years compared to earlier years and lastly if the media are comparing different contexts in which lobbying takes place. The method of this study is based on quantitative content analysis, and on Kanol’s ideas that by implementing theories from different disciplines one can develop theories on comparative lobbying in order to increase and improve our knowledge on the phenomenon of lobbyism as the contemporary research on the subject are scars and underdeveloped. The material in this study are news articles that have been collected between 1970 to 2000 and every second year from 2000 up until 2014. This study also provides a comprehensive picture of the Swedish context in which lobbying takes place by gathering information from multiple sources and earlier studies as this information has as of yet not been gathered in a single study up until now. The conclusion is that there has been a change of attitude towards lobbyism in Sweden, however, the dominant attitude is not a negative but rather a more skeptical/cynical one which has increased since 1992. The term lobbying is controversial because it’s being mentioned in various topics that could be considered negative by the reader as the decision making whether the news article is negative or positive is subjective. Because the media has increased its negative news reporting overall and that the unconscious mind of the reader is also attracted to negative news reporting, the term lobbying can be considered “negative” overall as it is constantly being mentioned in negative contexts even when the article is not about lobbying. A reasonable explanation why the media has a more negative / skeptical attitude to lobbyism is because of previous scandals related to lobbying either in Sweden or outside the country's border, but also because the media can’t hold the elected officials responsible for their actions as transparency and accountability is absent. Because of the increased reporting in Sweden on lobbying from all over the world, the subject will most likely become more relevant on the Swedish political agenda.
