Por fim, na descrição da operacionalização, chama atenção à importância que os projetos ganham na vida dos beneficiários e a boa articulação dos coordenadores com outras instituições, tanto do setor privado (Petrobras), como do setor público (CEASA) / Abstract: Contemporary Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture (UPA) is gaining prominence in the worldwide and national scene as it reaffirms itself as a permanent factor in the processes of sustainable development of people and society. In Campinas, the Municipal Chamber and Executive have, through municipal legislation and the regulation of the Community Kitchen-gardens Program of Campinas (CKP), signaled the intention of bringing to the political agenda, the subject of urban agriculture. However, in the current administration, Hélio de Oliveira Santos (2005-2008), the CKP still does not have a clear destination. In such a context, the objective of this work is to analyze the CKP, and to develop anew form of public politics of UPA in the city. Its specific objective is to understand and analyze the management of the CKP and kitchen-gardens projects in the city and the social economic profile of the participants. The data used had been gained from systematic visits and interviews during the whole of 2005 with the participation of the planners and policy makers, managers and institutional and communitarian urban beneficiaries of kitchen-gardens in the city of Campinas, beyond the documentary source. The analysis of the evidence gave the management of the CKP, an almost total picture, disconnected between the program and education, health and social action politics. The analysis of the projects managed here showed the importance of individual action in the implementation and success of the activities, particularly those with scarce resources. Finally, in describing the operation, it calls attention to the importance of projects that benefit the life of the beneficiaries and the joint efforts of the coordinators with other institutions the private (Petrobras) and the public sectors (CEASA) / Mestrado / Planejamento e Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável / Mestre em Engenharia Agrícola

Dynamics affecting subsistence agricultural production : an exploration of a case study of subsistence crop production within a rural community in the Ingwe Municipality of southern KwaZulu-Natal.Smith, Murray Kay. 28 November 2013 (has links)
Agriculture forms the livelihood basis of several billion people around the world. Despite the increasing trend for rural to urban migration the problems associated with poverty are expected to remain predominantly rural for some time into the future. The challenges associated with rural poverty are particularly important in South Africa where the remaining effects of the oppressive apartheid regime are still vividly evident. The rural population are often stranded in areas of stagnant economic growth and minimal employment opportunities further compounded by low levels of education. The livelihoods of these rural communities, in the former homelands, are often confined to a heavy reliance on remittance incomes and agriculture. However, in the recent past the level of agricultural activity in these rural homelands appears to be declining. This has direct implications for the development agenda in these rural areas. This study is an examination of the various dynamics which have affected the subsistence agriculture sector within a specific community in the former homeland of KwaZulu in Southern KwaZulu-Natal. The responses of 12 respondents, representing independent households, were recorded along with four purpositive interviews with relevant role players in the agricultural sector and in the rural community. The responses shed some light on the multifaceted dynamics which have played an important role in how individual households and the community at large make livelihood choices and how subsistence agriculture fits into these decisions. An increasing reliance on money as the basis of livelihood decisions is resulting in the reliance on agriculture shifting away from a central foundation of household livelihood towards a more supplementary form of food source and risk diversion. Shifting cultural norms have resulted in women and the youth becoming less involved in farming practices in general, which may have been influenced by the expansion of social grants into the rural communities. The changes in dynamics which influence local community and household livelihood decisions are important to consider when determining a possible development initiative in these rural areas. / Thesis (M.Dev.Studies)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2012.

Socioeconomic comparisons of organic and conventional farms in Canada : results from the 2001 CensusLipai, Monica. January 2007 (has links)
This thesis examines differences between organic and conventional farm and operators' characteristics, and identifies which characteristics explain whether a farm is organic or conventional. The data comes from the 2001 Canadian Census of Agriculture, which makes this study the first that is national in scope and includes detailed analysis of the differences between organic and conventional agriculture using a large sample size. / Farms were divided into three groups: conventional, primarily organic, and mixed production (some organic production). Parametric and nonparametric tests were used to analyze farm and operator characteristics. Logistic regression was used to determine which variables explain whether a farm is organic, conventional or mixed. Results indicate that organic farmers are more likely to be younger, female, work less off farm and more on farm, when compared to conventional. Organic farms tend to be smaller, more profitable, more diversified, and have a higher dependency on hired labour. There were no differences in capital intensity. Mixed farms manifested the same patterns as organic when compared to conventional.
