Couplage fluide-structure dans l’embolie gazeuse du peuplier / Fluid-structure coupling in the gaz embolism of Populus

Capron, Marie 03 April 2014 (has links)
The xylem vessels of trees constitute a model natural microfluidic system. In this work, we have studied the mechanism of air flow in the Populus xylem. The vessel microstructure was characterized by optical microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) at different length scales. The xylem vessels have length ≈ 15 cm and diameter ≈ 20 μm. Flow from one vessel to the next occurs through ∼ 10 2 pits, which are grouped together at the ends of the vessels. The pits contain a thin, porous pit membrane with a thickness of 310 nm. We have measured the Young’s moduli of the vessel wall and of the pits (both water-saturated and after drying) by specific nanoindentation and nanoflexion experiments with AFM. We found that both the dried and water-saturated pit membranes have Young’s modulus around 0.4 MPa, in agreement with values obtained by micromolding of pits deformed by an applied pressure difference. Air injection experiments reveal that air flows through the xylem vessels when the differential pressure across a sample is larger than a critical value ∆P c ≈ 1.8 MPa. In order to model the air flow rate for ∆P ≥ ∆P c , we assumed the pit membrane to be a porous medium that is strained by the applied pressure difference. Water menisci in the pit pores play the role of capillary valves, which open at ∆P = ∆P c . From the point of view of the plant physiology, this work presents a basic understanding of the physics of bordered pits.

At this stage, it was verified that the droplets did not follow the air flow, being directed towards the duct wall causing dripping and getting no alteration in temperature and in humidity of the air flow. In the second stage, a humidifier extension was mounted in the center of the air duct, with nozzles spraying in the flow direction. Results showed a significant reduction in temperature and a significant increase in the relative humidity of the air flow. / Swirl number measurement using cylinder head intake ports from a diesel engine manufactured via rapid prototype techniques.

Gustavo Fernandes Martioli 06 April 2017 (has links)
The present work proposes to execute steady state bench test, swirl number measurements, using a modular device and cylinder head intake ports from a diesel engine manufactured via rapid prototype (RP) techniques. Swirl number measurements with intake ports produced by RP, bring as main advantages: Tests reproducibility, easy to measure the swirl number variances in consequence of potential casting or machining process deviations besides of time reduction to the development of new intake ports geometry. The research is experimental and one sample of the investigated cylinder head was sent to the laboratory and the swirl number was measured for later results comparison. After the early development phase of data acquisition and design improvements, this cylinder head sample was then sectioned and digitalized as to know to have the same internal geometry in the intake ports produced via rapid prototype. The intake ports were assembled in the modular device to perform bench tests. All tests were performed in the same rig and with the same control system with aiming to reduce the external variables during data acquisition. When the mean results analysis was performed in order to compare the results between cylinder head and modular device using rapid prototype, no statistically significant changes were found. The proposed method represented the investigated cylinder head´s intake air flow.
