The purpose of this dissertation is to explore vocational upper secondary students’ perceptions of and attitudes to using drama activities as a part of English language education. Data collection for this project was performed during a teaching practice period at a vocational school in the south of Sweden with the exception of interviews that took place afterwards.The participating students perceived the use of drama activities as something positive.Significant factors in the analysis were mainly the effects of role play, the importance of beneficial group dynamics and the influence of the school setting. A key point that emerges from this dissertation is the benefit of varying lessons and working towards reducing students’ anxiety to speak.

1 Abstract This diploma introduces three alternative methods taught in the study of foreign languages - a method of suggestopedy, Nepustil's method and the Act and Speak method. The purpose of this work is to approach the methods from a historical and methodological perspective. The main focus is aimed at inspections of alternative schools, supplied with student's questionnaires and the visual material from classes. The theoretical part discusses methods from a historical perspective, the progress and presentation of grammar and learning material. Furthermore introducing the basic concept and features of alternative methods with the posibility of applying them during the teaching of Czech language for foreigners. The practical part introduces research made up of inspections at alternative schools along with interviews with founders and successors of these methods. As analysis of the questionnaires that explore the opinions and awareness of teachers about the effectivity and usefulness of untraditional methods in teaching is also a part of it. Practical inspections and conclusions based on the results of questionnaires showed the Act and Speak method to be the most beneficial method. This thesis deals with the description of the contemporary situation in the French language teaching in the Czech Republic with a view to the comparison of traditional and alternative teaching methods. The first part of the thesis consists of the description of the historical development of the teaching methods and their characteristics. Then I point out the problems related to the classification of the teaching methods and their division into two main groups of traditional and alternative methods. The comparison of the two groups of methods is included in the third chapter of the thesis. In the last part a questionnaire was used to find out the opinions of teachers and students and I also show selected data concerning the contemporary situation in foreign languages teaching in the school year 2005/ 2006.

This research examined the potential of teaching through play and peer-teaching as alternative teaching methods to improve the mathematical performance of Grade 1 children with symptoms of ADHD; by answering, would adapting teaching methods to include teaching through play and/or peer-teaching, in the South African classroom, improve the mathematical performance of children with symptoms of ADHD? A pre-test-post-test control group design was employed in this comparative experimental study. Participants were purposively selected then randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups. An eight-week intervention was implemented as teaching through play or peer-teaching. Pre-test and post-test scores were analysed using a dependent t-test, a Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, and a Kruskal Wallis test. Teaching through play and peer-teaching have the potential to improve the mathematical performance of Grade 1 children with symptoms of ADHD.
