Levels of Art Development Among Preschool ChildrenMiner, Sally Lynn 01 May 1970 (has links)
The problem which was investigated in this study was the influence of a child development laboratory experience and the child's discriminatory abilities on the developmental level of children's art productions.
Forty-eight children, three and four years of age, of whom 24 had no prior experience, and 24 others had completed approximately six months as participants in a child development laboratory, were included in the study.
All children were given a discrimination task to establish their individual levels of discriminatory abilities. Each child painted four pictures, two with easel paint and two with crayons. Each painting was analyzed to determine art content and level of development.
The findings indicated that discrimination ability does not appear to be an influential factor on the developmental level of children's art creations among children of this age. Children demonstrated more advanced art stages when using crayons than when painting with tempra at the easel. Experience in the Child Development Laboratory exerted its strongest influence on the child's production of learned art forms, alphabet letters and numerals.
It was concluded that art experiences for three and four year old children tend to be motoric and exploratory responses to the various media in use by them. However, experience is also a factor in the development of children's art, in that the child's use of learned art forms is influenced by an enriched learning environment.

Vocal Behavior and Interactions Among Parents And Offspring in the American DipperFite, Mary Kathleen 01 May 1984 (has links)
The American Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus), an inhabitant of rapidly flowing mountain streams, is an aquatic passerine whose vocalizations have previously been undescribed. This study examines the spectrographic characteristics and contexts of calls and song in a color-banded population of Dippers. calls of adults are the Jih, Weep and Grawk calls; calls of nestlings and fledglings are the Chip and Beg calls. Adult Dippers have a limited number of call types which occupy a middle range of frequencies (3 to 6kHz) and have structural characteristics which enhance detection of vocal signals. Gradation is present between call types. Possible explanations for similarities in characteristics of the Weep call of the adult female and the begging vocalizations of nestlings are discussed. The song is variable and complex, characterized by repetition of notes, contrast between adjacent note types and a wide range of note types. Vocal and social adaptations to the stream environment are considered.
Post-feeding singing (PFS) is song given by adult birds immediately following the feeding of fledglings. Females sang following 29. 6% of feedings whereas rrales sang following 14. 6%. Average duration of singing by males (15.4 sec) was almost twice that of females (8.4 sec). Feeding bouts and other contexts of adult singing are discussed. Evidence for the functional significance of PFS and speculations on selective forces shaping its evolution are presented.

Intoxication: facts about the black snake, songs about the cure : an exploration in inter cultural communication through the Sugarman ProjectSan Roque, Craig, University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury, Faculty of Health, Humanities and Social Ecology, School of Social Ecology January 1998 (has links)
This is a narrative of the Sugarman Project, a community project in Central Australia concerned with research into ancient Mediterranean and Greek traditions of alcohol use and abuse. The project was initiated as a response to a request from an Aboriginal man for a ‘story about alcohol’ which would fill a missing link in traditional Aboriginal conceptualisation of alcohol. The ‘story’ would have a role in indigenous treatment of alcohol abuse, put in a symbolic form consistent with oral teaching methods of indigenous custom. The project is centred around the development of an original performance script. The thesis describes the origin, context, development, rationale and implications of the project, especially with a view to considering the potential of the mythologem of Dionysos as a therapeutic paradigm in intercultural substance abuse work. Particular attention is given to the relationship between Aboriginal and European therapeutic practitioners and the use of myth, metaphor, symbolic function and specific Aboriginal ‘dreaming stories’ as a source and backup to therapeutic practice. Principal themes include the role of mythopoetic symbol formation in the development of thinking; reflections on the presence of theriomorphic serpentine imagery in the work; the role of stories as mental containers of therapeutic theory; reflections on the ‘milieu’ needed for implementing intercultural therapeutic procedures; examples of positive indigenous responses to alcohol work; preliminary notions on cross cultural transference communications; and reflections on primal states associated with alcohol intoxication. The conclusion is that the experience of developing a Western myth in concert with Aboriginal colleagues confirms the value of the initial, seminal suggestion that ‘dreaming stories’ have an authentic place in the repertoire of alcohol treatment and education / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Multi-criteria Decision Making With Interdependent Criteria Using Prospect TheoryBozkurt, Ahmet 01 June 2007 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, an integrated solution methodology for a general discrete multi-criteria decision making problem is developed based on the well-known outranking method Promethee II. While the methodology handles the existence of interdependency between the criteria, it can also incorporate the prospect theory in order to correctly reflect the decision behavior of the decision maker. A software is also developed for the application of the methodology and some applications are performed and presented.

Self-efficacy och arbete under studietidenJansson, Simon, Kallin, Ludvig January 2014 (has links)

Enhancing Culturally Competent Care for Obesity Among African ImmigrantsJoshua, Solomon, Joshua, Solomon January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: This DNP project examines the effectiveness of a brief educational presentation to
improve cultural competency care for obesity among African Immigrants. This project focused
on providers at southwestern urban primary care clinic to become culturally competent in caring
for African immigrants with obesity. The findings and recommendations of this project also
serve as resource for other providers locally and nation-wide who provide care for African
immigrant population.
Method: Utilizing a purposeful sampling method, quantitative pre-test and post-test
questionnaires were used to evaluate cultural knowledge and intended clinical practices of
participants (N =5), feasibility and satisfaction of the educational activity. Aggregate data
collected from the pre-and post-test questionnaires were analyzed and discussed through
thematic and descriptive analysis.
Results: All participants demonstrated significant enhancement in cultural competency in
knowledge in regard to nutrition, physical activity and linguistics/communication, body image
perception and obesity management in African cultural context. Also, one hundred percent (n=5)
of the participants recorded very high level of satisfaction of the intervention content and
delivery.
Conclusion: The education intervention was successful in enhancing providers’ cultural
knowledge and competence in caring for African immigrants with obesity. It also serves as
valuable initiative to further develop culturally competent care based on evidence-based practice
to enhance the quality of care delivery for African immigrants as well as other vulnerable
minority populations.
For the over two million African Immigrants in the United States, obesity and its related
complications is a constant struggle for this minority population. Health disparities exist for all
minority groups suffering from poverty in the US, and the immigrant population is at a higher
risk for these disparities due to the slower rate of acculturation. The effort to address obesity
among immigrants especially those of African descent is significantly influenced by providers’
cultural knowledge, sensitivity and competency in healthcare delivery. This project outlines the
development, implementation and evaluation of a brief PowerPoint presentation aiming to
educate healthcare providers on cultural competency and appropriateness in caring for African
Immigrants with obesity.

ENGLISH: In a changing world of relativism there are many critical voices against the preaching of a sermon. These critical voices put the sermon under attack. In all facets of human life we experience change. That makes the preaching of a sermon more complex in the context of a changing world. What looked like homiletic wisdom fifty years ago, doesn’t count today. The critical question is: Does preaching have a future? Do we have any idea of the effect and reception of a sermon? Because of the present critical situation of peoples’ perception about the church in general, the preacher is encouraged to introspection and revaluation of his sermons. In the research of the problem and the seeking for some possible solutions this study connects with the ‘practical theological methodology’ whereby the standing scientific praxis is researched. This is done by giving attention to the dynamic interaction between theory and praxis. This process is structured by a hermeneutical interaction between a literature study and a empirical research which results in an adjusted practical theory. In Chapter 1 the research problem is stated, followed by an explanation and formulation of the question under research as well as the purpose thereof. The deficiency in the research entails that most preachers think they are in close contact with the hearers to sermons and that direct feedback from the hearers is unnecessary. The world in which the spirit, the time the sermon is delivered and the hearers needs towards the sermon, haven’t been researched on a empirical basis in Paarl. Preaching within listeners in the context of the churches in Paarl is in the form of a monologue where the listener sits passively. The centre of the problem statement of this research is the shortage of involvement of congregation members towards the sermon during the worship service. The question under research is whether preaching is still relevant and whether preaching still must take place in the same way that we are familiar with. The purpose of this research is to find out what the hearer considers as relevant preaching and if preaching must still be that prominent in the worship service. In Chapter 2 we look at the world in which we live and the timeline wherein the hearer lives. In Chapter 3 we will look at different hermeneutical approaches to get to a base theory for relevant preaching. This will serve as a conceptual framework for the empirical part of the study. In Chapter 4 we undertake the empirical research. It takes place in the form qualitative interviews which focus on individuals from different churches in Paarl. Information was obtained by means of in-depth interviews preceded by structured interview schedules. As an example, the research found that the majority of believers regard the preaching of a sermon as an irreplaceable element of the church and of one’s Christians life. Chapter 5 reveals the results of a hermeneutical interaction between the imperical research and the preliminary theoretical assumptions. The results that play in towards each other will lead to new or adjusted concepts for a relevant practical theory to guide the praxis in a new direction. This is a regulative activity which confirms the existing praxis and makes us aware of certain adaptations. In this adjusted practical theory there is pleaded for a new emphasis towards the culture and context where preaching takes place. Therefore more often preachers must listen to the hearers voices to create interactivity between preacher and hearer. New communication techniques also need to be taught regarding preaching in a new digital culture. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Measuring Quality Of Life In Pediatric Cancer Patients: The Relationships Among Parental Depression, Anxiety, Stress, And ConcorRoddenberry, Angela 01 January 2005 (has links)
Advancements made in the treatment of the physiological aspects of childhood cancer have resulted in a greater need to conceptualize the disease psychologically as a chronic illness that causes significant stress and requires ongoing adjustment. This study investigates the relationships among parental characteristics, child characteristics, and the quality of life of children diagnosed with cancer. Forty-seven mothers and sixteen fathers, as well as nineteen children diagnosed with cancer, completed measures of their own psychological functioning. Measures of the diagnosed children's quality of life also were completed. Mothers' ratings of their children's quality of life were found to be correlated positively with both fathers' and children's ratings. In addition, a significant relationship was found between mothers' depression and parenting stress and children's quality of life, as well as mothers' and fathers' anxiety and children's quality of life. Finally, mothers', fathers', and children's ratings of their own characteristics predicted significantly their ratings of children's quality of life. Overall, these results suggested the importance of examining the psychological characteristics of family members when assessing the quality of life of children with cancer.
