An investigation into OFDM as a suitable modulation tecnique for an acoustic underwater modem

Du Preez, Johannes 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as a viable modulation technique for an ultrasonic acoustic underwater modem. The underwater environment provides a challenging setting for acoustic communications. Long delay spreads due to multipath propagation, severe Doppler frequency shifts, frequency dependent absorption and very limited bandwidth are but some of the challenges to overcome. OFDM essentially provides the parallel transmission of symbols in the frequency domain by simultaneously modulating many closely spaced orthogonal subcarriers. The resulting long parallel symbol rate together with the cyclic extension of symbols render the signal robust against intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath propagation. Intercarrier interference (ICI) between the overlapping frequency responses of subcarriers is mitigated by their property of orthogonality. Doppler spread contributes to the loss of orthogonality and can result in severe ICI. A method of measuring the Doppler shift by means of including a preamble and postamble symbol with each data frame is proposed. The detected frequency offset is corrected by resampling the frame at the desired sample rate. Not only do the ambles serve as a mechanism for timing and frequency synchronisation, but they are also applied in the channel estimation process. The equalisation of channel response is required for the coherent demodulation of the received symbols. An investigation into different phase shift keying (PSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations reveal optimal arrangements for minimal symbol errors. The optimised QAM constellations do not lend themselves to Gray-coding, so that an efficient interleaving scheme is needed to mitigate the non-uniform distribution of bit errors among symbol errors. Forward error correction is provided via a Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem (BCH) block code. Variable code rates, together with the ability to switch between different constellations, enable the modem to perform so-called variable modulation in an attempt to maximise the throughput under specific channel conditions. The modulation/demodulation scheme is wholly defined in software as to provide flexibility and facilitate experimentation with different signal processing methods. The accompanying hardware platform allows for the transmission of a pre-generated signal and the recording of a received signal for off-line processing. The prototype design serves as a proof of concept and thus provides only simplex communication. Field tests over limited distances demonstrate the successful operation of the prototype modem. We conclude that OFDM is indeed a suitable modulation technique for acoustic underwater communication.

In the simulation of the interferometer effects of light propagation were analyzed, considering the dispersion of the group velocity (GVD) and third order (TOD), intrapulse Raman scattering, self-slope (self-steepening) and self-modulation phase in the generalized non-linear SchrÃdinger equation. The first time the study was conducted for four power division ratio of factors incident in one of the device ports and three dimensions for the device ring length. To characterize the system performance, were analyzed the transmission curves, extinction ratio, crosstalk and compression factor of the transmitted pulse. In the second moment, the performance of the non-linear switching was observed for obtaining gate under Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM). Exciting the two device input ports with logical levels "0" and "1", observing their behavior in one of the device outputs. Initially, the modulation is varied adjustment parameter (| ε |), obtaining only the logical OR gate. And in a second application, the fixed modulation parameter remained and was varied the phase of the input ports 0 to 2π rad, lying type logic gate OR, AND and XOR. The characteristics of a metamaterial guide that has the real part of electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability negatives were also studied. This metamaterial guide is coupled to a conventional guide, observing the transmission characteristics and critical power of this type of coupler and compared with a conventional coupler. For this analysis we used a decreasing automodulation profile linearly with five minimum, observing a hysteresis behavior.

Estimation of energy detection thresholds and error probability for amplitude-modulated short-range communication radios

Anttonen, A. (Antti) 30 November 2011 (has links)
Abstract In this thesis, novel data and channel estimation methods are proposed and analyzed for low-complexity short-range communication (SRC) radios. Low complexity is challenging to achieve especially in very wideband or millimeter-wave SRC radios where phase recovery and energy capture from numerous multipaths easily become a bottleneck for system design. A specific type of transceiver is selected using pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) at the transmitter and energy detection (ED) at the receiver, and it is thus called an ED-PAM system. Nonnegative PAM alphabets allow using an ED structure which enables a phase-unaware detection method for avoiding complicated phase recovery at the receiver. Moreover, the ED-PAM approach results in a simple multipath energy capture, and only one real decision variable, whose dimension is independent of the symbol alphabet size, is needed. In comparison with optimal phase-aware detection, the appealing simplicity of suboptimal ED-PAM systems is achieved at the cost of the need for a higher transmitted signal energy or shorter link distance for obtaining a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver, as ED-PAM systems are more vulnerable to the effects of noise and interference. On the other hand, the consequences of requiring a higher SNR may not be severe in the type of SRC scenarios where a sufficient received SNR is readily available due to a short link distance. Furthermore, significant interference can be avoided by signal design. However, what has slowed down the development of ED-PAM systems is that efficient symbol decision threshold estimation and related error probability analysis in multipath fading channels have remained as unsolved problems. Based on the above observations, this thesis contributes to the state-of-the-art of the design and analysis for ED-PAM systems as follows. Firstly, a closed-form near-optimal decision threshold selection method, which adapts to a time-varying channel gain and enables an arbitrary choice of the PAM alphabet size and an integer time-bandwidth product of the receiver filters, is proposed. Secondly, two blind estimation schemes of the parameters for the threshold estimation are introduced. Thirdly, analytical error probability evaluation in frequency-selective multipath fading channels is addressed. Special attention is given to lognormal fading channels, which are typically used to model very wideband SRC multipath channels. Finally, analytical error probability evaluation with nonideal parameter estimation is presented. The results can be used in designing low-complexity transceivers for very wideband and millimeter-wave wireless SRC devices of the future.

Performance comparison of two implementations of TCM for QAM

Peh, Lin Kiat 12 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. / Trellis-Coded Modulation (TCM) is employed with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) to provide error correction coding with no expense in bandwidth. There are two common implementations of TCM, namely pragmatic TCM and Ungerboeck TCM. Both schemes employ Viterbi algorithms for decoding but have different code construction. This thesis investigates and compares the performance of pragmatic TCM and Ungerboeck TCM by implementing the Viterbi decoding algorithm for both schemes with 16-QAM and 64-QAM. Both pragmatic and Ungerboeck TCM with six memory elements are considered. Simulations were carried out for both pragmatic and Ungerboeck TCM to evaluate their respective performance. The simulations were done using Matlab software, and an additive white Gaussian noise channel was assumed. The objective was to ascertain that pragmatic TCM, with its reduced-complexity decoding, is more suitable to adaptive modulation than Ungerboeck TCM. / Civilian

Analog Single Sideband-Pulse Width Modulation Processor for Parametric Acoustic Arrays

Marathe, Vikrant A 01 June 2019 (has links)
Parametric acoustic arrays are ultrasonic-based loudspeakers that produce highly directive audio. The audio must first be preprocessed and modulated into an ultrasonic carrier before being emitted into the air, where it will self-demodulate in the far field. The resulting audio wave is proportional to the double time-derivative of the square of the modulation envelope. This thesis presents a fully analog processor which encodes the audio into two Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signals in quadrature phase and sums them together to produce a Single Sideband (SSB) spectrum around the fundamental frequency of the PWM signals. The two signals are modulated between 8% and 24% duty cycle to maintain a quasi-linear relationship between the duty cycle and the output signal level. This also allows the signals to sum without overlapping each other, maintaining a two-level output. The system drives a network of narrowband transducers with a center frequency equal to the PWM fundamental. Because the transducers are voltage driven, they have a bandpass frequency response which behaves as a first-order integrator on the SSB signal, eliminating the need for two integrators in the processor. Results show that the “SSB-PWM” output wave has a consistent 20-30dB difference in magnitude between the upper sideband and lower sideband. In simulation, a single tone test shows higher total harmonic distortion for lower frequencies and higher modulation depth. A two-tone test creates a 2nd order intermodulation term that increases with the frequencies of the input signals.

The Effectiveness Of Data Codes And Hardware Selection To Mitigate Scintillation Effects On Free Space Optical Data Transmission

Stein, Keith 01 January 2006 (has links)
The design of an optical communication link must plan for the random effects of atmospheric turbulence. This study analyses data from an experiment which transmitted from a laser located 8 meters above ground over a 13 Km range to coherent detection devices approximately 162 meters above ground. The effects of a fading and surging beam wave were considered in regards to code techniques for error correction, amplitude modulation and hardware architecture schemes. This study simulated the use of arrays and large apertures for the receiving devices, and compared the resultant scintillation index with the theoretical calculations.

First Order Self-Oscillating Class-D Circuit with Triangular Wave Injection

Carroll, Matthew J 01 June 2021 (has links) (PDF)
An investigation into performance improvements to the modulator stage of a class-D amplifier is conducted in this thesis. Two of the standard topologies, namely class-D open-loop pulse-width modulation (PWM), and the improved self-oscillating feedback system are benchmarked against a topology which includes both a hysteretic comparator in a feedback loop and triangle wave injection. Circuit performance is analyzed by comparing how the triangle injection circuit handles known issues with open-loop and self-oscillating circuits. Using this analysis, it is shown that the triangle injection topology offers an improved power supply rejection ratio relative to open-loop PWM and reduces distortion generated by frequency modulation characteristic of the self-oscillating topology.
