Carnap and Quine on Analyticity

Moosavi Karimi, Seyed Masoud 01 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation examines the Carnap-Quine debate on analyticity with the objective of identifying exactly what is at stake. Close scrutiny of Quine’s criticism of the definitions of analyticity reveals that most of his objections are convincing only if they are considered in relation to the definitions of analyticity in natural language. Carnap, however, defines analyticity in artificial languages. The dissertation also shows that Carnap can meet the objections to his definitions by using a perspective based within his own philosophy. After examining the presumptions of each party to the debate, the dissertation concludes that the disagreement between Carnap and Quine on the notion of analyticity is rooted in their different approaches to empiricism and that there is nothing said by either philosopher which proves that one approach has ultimate advantages over the other. It is thus impossible to identify a winner in the Carnap-Quine debate on analyticity. The process of arriving at this conclusion starts with a discussion in the first three chapters of Carnap’s philosophy followed by a critical and detailed discussion of his syntactical and semantical definitions of analyticity and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Chapter Four examines Quine’s objections to Carnap’s definitions of essential predication and shows that his objections do not undermine Carnap’s definitions of this notion in artificial languages. It also shows how vital providing a proper definition of essential predication in natural language is for Carnap’s philosophy and examines whether or not he is able to do so. Chapter Five analyzes Quine’s objections to Carnap’s definitions of logical truth and demonstrates that Carnap is able to respond to all of them when the discussion is situated within his philosophical system. Again, Quine’s objections to definitions of logical truth are meaningful only if they are considered in relation to natural language, which is not Carnap’s concern. The dissertation concludes by showing that both Carnap and Quine arrived at their conclusions with respect to the nature of logical sentences, based not on the arguments in their debate on analyticity, but on their philosophical considerations regarding the principle of empiricism: for Carnap, logical sentences are out of the realm of knowledge and independent of matters of fact whereas, for Quine, these are as empirical as other sentences. Nothing either says in their debate can convince the other to accept a different viewpoint.

A Study on Decisions of Location Selection for Joining Bo Bo Coin Laundry

Kuo, Yao-ching 08 July 2010 (has links)
As the increase of house renters who working in other cities and also the decrease of the number of household washing machine within high price, more and more people choose not to do the laundry at home. For this reason, launderettes have became popular since laundry-helping stores charge considerably more than self-service laundry shops and most customers are not willing to have their underwear washed by others. The demand for launderettes has been dramatically increase for the consideration of the economical expense of doing laundry in the launderette than paying someone else to do the laundry. Therefore, a good location of a launderette would certainly make huge profit under the circumstances. This research aims to assist the potential launderette franchisees to identify correct locations to run the business. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is mainly adapted in this research which classifies the hierarchy as four evaluation factors including business benefit, competition level, base of operation and transportation. Furthermore, twelve guidelines of address selecting deriving from each four evaluation factors which are analyzed and sorted by experts with the weights, scores and alternatives to categorize four districts consisting of residential area, industrial area, school area and commercial area. Once the proper area is determined by first Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the precise address in the proper one is able to be predicted by second Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Hence, the launderette locating exact shop address in the certain area would be evaluated the natural conditions. After Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was implemented in the first time, four options and the weight between every hierarchy could be clearly known. This outcome makes potential franchisees understand the proper location they may identify to make more profit in the circumstances. Then, the potential launderette franchisees are able to choose the exact address of their shops in the selected location to increase their revenue after the second Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is conducted. The result of this research provides potential launderette franchisees with a guide to evaluate whether the launderette locates in an appropriate place and a distinct resolution of decision making for launderette location.

Theory and Calculation of Iterative Functional Differential Equation

Lin, Yin-wei 03 September 2010 (has links)
Functional differential equations with delay have long been studied due to their practical applications. For the delay term is not a constant number, many researches study the case when this deviating argument depends on the state variable. So we deal with the differential and functional equations involving with the compositions of the unknown function, i.e. the iterative functional differential equations (IFDEs) and iterative functional equations (IFEs) without derivative. The main purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the solutions of such equations, including their analytic solutions, numerical solutions and qualitative behaviors. First, we survey some well known differential equations of this type which possess analytic solutions. Then the classical method of undetermined coefficients is used to compute these power series solutions for the first order IFDEs in Chapter 1, the second order IFDEs in Chapter 2 and FDEs in Chapter 3. Taylor series method is also used to get these analytic solutions in Chapter 4. Systematical method is found to locate the fixed point in generalized sense, so we can use these methods to calculate the coefficients of their analytic solutions. Furthermore, we also establish the existence and uniqueness theorem for analytic solution in Chapter 5. Second, we survey the known existence and uniqueness theorems of solutions for these IFDEs and FDEs in Chapter 6. Then we apply Schauder fixed point theorem to establish new existence theorems of local solutions for general IFDEs. Under certain conditions, these local solutions can be extended to global solutions. Chapter 7 deals with the simplest IFDEs the Eder's equation. We extend the qualitative properties of this case and find its solution is not unique. In Chapter 8, we use Euler method to get the numerical solution of IFDEs. Under some conditions, we have the error analysis on these equations. In Chapter 9, we employ the method of undetermined coefficients, Taylor series, Picard's iteration and Si's methods to get their analytic solutions. Their comparisons, the advantage and disadvantage of these methods are also discussed.

Analytic Continuity Method for Bent Waveguides with Small Bent Angles

Hsu, Jiun-Yuan 05 July 2004 (has links)
Dielectric waveguides are crucial devices in the making of integrated-optical circuits. It is very important to analyze this type of waveguides so we can optimize the design for better performance. Analysis of bent waveguides has been a difficult problem in the past. In a bent waveguide, two coordinate systems are needed to fully describe the ongoing complex scattering process in the transition region of the waveguide. It is extremely hard to analyze such problems for methods built on a single coordinate system such as the finite-difference,finite-element methods and the beam propagation method (BPM). In this thesis, we adopt dual mode-field representations (for all the low and higher-order modes), one for the incident and reflected waves and the other for the transmitted waves, to study bending effects. To calculate the wave fields, we apply the analytic continuity principle to allow the waves to analytically extend and join smoothly on the bordering line. By matching the two continuity conditions of both the fields and their normal derivatives we get two matrix equations for the reflection and transmission coefficients. For symmetrical bending waveguide, the task can be further reduced to solving two smaller problems each with even or odd symmetry on the bordering line. As the bent angle increases the governing matrix equation becomes more singular. As a result, all the elements in the matrix are calculated with closed-form formulae to minimize the stability problem. In addition, special numerical methods are used to extend the range of the bending angles that this method can handle. In conclusion, our theory can calculate microwave bending waveguides up to 30 degrees and for dielectric slab waveguide with 15 degree bent angle. With this method we are able to compute small reflection coefficients of about -60dB and less.
