The supramolecular chemistry of cucurbituril molecules

Lorenzo, Susan, Chemistry, Faculty of Science, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
The set of molecules cucurbit[n]uril (Qn) are macrocycles composed of n glycoluril monomers linked by methylene groups. These molecules have two oxygen-ringed portals of a diameter slightly smaller than their internal cavity diameter. This thesis describes syntheses, crystallisations, crystal structure determinations, crystal packing analyses and force field calculations exploring the supramolecular chemistry of Qn molecules and their derivatives. Qn acts as a host for guest molecules and at the outset of this project no metal containing molecule had been encapsulated in a Qn molecule. One aim of this project was to prepare such complexes. This was achieved with the synthesis and characterisation of crystalline {[cis-SnCl4(H2O)2]@Q7}2(SnCl6)3(H3O)6(H2O)23. Other compounds prepared and characterised crystallographically in the course of this project are: [(Q6)(Na3(H2O)8)]2[CoCl4]4[Co(H2O)6]2[CoCl(H2O)5]2(Cl)4, (Q5@Q10)(CH3COOH)(Cl)2(H3O)2(H2O)26, (Cl@Q5)4Q6(SnCl6)8(H3O)20(H2O)24, (Q8)3(PtCl6)4(H3O)8(H2O)x, (Q8)2(PtCl6)3(H3O)6(H2O)18, (Q7)(Cr3O10)(H3O)2(H2O)x and (Q6)(SnCl6)(H3O)2(H2O)x. While the smaller Qn (n = 5?) retain their circular forms, the larger Qn (n &gt 8) are less rigid and distort to accommodate larger guests. After analysis of the crystal structures of these Qn compounds and those listed in the Cambridge Structural Database, the principal packing motifs of the Qn molecules were elucidated. The most common is the portal-to-side interaction in which the portal oxygen atoms of one Qn approach the hydrogen atoms around the equator of another Qn. Force-field calculations on guest@Qn complexes were conducted to determine the mechanism for the formation of these complexes. A comparison of the intermolecular interactions of phenylated systems and comparable fluorinated phenyl systems was made using both crystal packing analyses and forcefield energy calculations. Intermolecular energy parameters for these calculations were derived and validated in this work. The principal fluorinated species studied was the [B(C6F5)4]?anion. Examination of its crystal structures found that the substitution of the hydrogen atoms by fluorine atoms is influential enough to alter the predominant intramolecular conformation. It is the ???flipper?conformer, between pairs of perfluorophenyl groups, that is overwhelmingly the favoured conformation and this has a strong effect on the types of phenyl embraces that a [B(C6F5)4]?anion will form. While the parallel 4PFE, the offset parallel 4PFE and the orthogonal 4PFE are all observed the 6PFE is not.

Measurement of arsenobetaine and arsenocholine in fish tissue by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry

Zimmerman, Michael L. 08 1900 (has links) (PDF)
M.S. / Environmental Science / A technique to measure arsenobetaine and arsenocholine in fish tissue by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry was developed with particular attention to quantitative analysis. Experiments were performed which demonstrate analysis of the compounds desorbed directly from thin layer silica chromatography matrices, quantitative analysis of arsenobetaine in real fish samples, and accurate mass measurement of arsenobetaine in normal FAB/MS using peaks from the glycerol matrix as mass references. Improvements to the technique to quantitatively measure these important arsenic metabolites are suggested including optimization of the extraction/isolation procedures and use of isotopically labelled internal standards or surrogates for more accurate measurements.

Abstract Such key elements as the suggestion system organization culture , question formed inside the organization improve consciousness , incentive system, except basic conditions needed to possess while building and constructing the administrative system of knowledge of enterprises on the practice; Can also be regarded as and implemented staff's originality management and basic tactics of organizational innovation. And organize no matter promote information management , suggestion system or organizational innovation, can is it must reach like improve sufficient ' whole participation ' of terms , motion of activity to work smoothly; So, the key factor of influencing the activity that it is organized that ' staff participate in ' is important must be probed into. The centre of market survey of enterprise management of Harvard did the investigation to the vast professional manager, the suggestion system ranks the fourth place while managing tools in ten major crazes. December of the 87th year of the Republic of China, the suggestion system that motion association and centre halfback's centre of development carry on pursues the state result to show, 72.10% of the enterprises channel into this system at home, however, the investigation result shows, the company above 80% of domestic participating in rate of system staff of enterprise's motion (the number of people / staff's number of the motion ) is but only 12.30%, there are 77.10% of the companies that think it is that the system pursue the greatest problem on that " the staff participate in the will " in enterprises pursueing the suggestion system at home. In addition, probe into our country the large thesis for the Doctorate of the suggestion system according to the researcher, find that studies and overweights more suggestion system and knowledge to create and organize in study at home, probe into the suggestion system and there is very few and black research which the staff join. In addition, the suggestion system , knowledge create , information management and organizing study to all belong to the activity of the whole company, the staff's participation is very important; And can be implementing the basic tactics had in information management , intention management or organizational innovation in order to organize in suggestion system; So, this research purpose is two: First. Probe into understanding with interview which the factor of the suggestion system are to influence the staff to participate in organizing through documents? Then gather together the structure chart exactly setting up this research. Second. With the analytic approach of the level (analytic hierarchy process, AHP) as research approach, set up not influencing not organizing staff of suggestion system not to be participated in weight of factor of ways on through being systemic than, offer the reference that the industry or the organization promote the suggestion system . On the research approach , put in order and probe into literary composition surface and factor suitable for this research theme through documents first in this research, set up AHP and study the structure according to this, and then and then study the structure through AHP that expert's interview , enterprise view and emulate and participate in the motion system practice education and training among the workshops to revise and establish this research, then set up expert's questionnaire in accordance with AHP law, coaching advisor and lecturer and enterprise suggestion system pusher correlated with the system of the motion carry on questionnaire investigation, and then set up comparative matrix in pairs in accordance with AHP law after the questionnaire is retrieved , and use AHP ' Expert Choice 2000 ' to make policy and support the application software, screen the effective questionnaire, calculate a advisor group and assay its consistency with one group of weights of every level of AHP expert's questionnaire feedbacked of industry. Research shows: 1. Advisor groups of expert organize staff, suggestion system, participate in important the first five factors and weight views in order influencing Whether. Analytic modelling of Rosetta Langmuir probe measurements based on SPIS simulations

Hånberg, Christian January 2011 (has links)
The Rosetta spacecraft is on route to rendezvous with the comet 67P/ Churyomov-Gerasimenko. One of the instruments onboard is the Langmuir probe instrument (LAP) developed by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics. The LAP includes two spherical probes used to measure a number of properties of the surrounding plasma. One measured property is the plasma density for which the spacecraft potential is a good proxy. By the determining the potential between spacecraft and Langmuir probe, the spacecraft potential can be measured. But such measurements are sometimes disturbed by the potential from the spacecraft itself, the influence from photoemitted electrons and the solar wind wake behind Rosetta. In order to correct for the errors caused by spacecraft-plasma interaction in the solar wind a model depending on the spacecraft (and Langmuir probe) orientation is developed. The data is obtained from three-dimensional simulations of Rosetta, with varying plasma parameters, using the software SPIS (Spacecraft Plasma Interaction System). Least squares fitting with a set of basis functions then provide the input for a parametric modelling. The developed model makes it possible to estimate the influence of each of the disturbing effects. The developed model gives good fits to data obtained in SPIS simulations. The two angular dependent factors, modelling perturbation on potential measurements caused by photoelectrons and wake effects, show errors below the 100 mV level in all cases. The model describing the influence from spacecraft potential is slightly less accurate, with errors at or below the 400 mV level in all relevant cases.

Shipment Consolidation in Discrete Time and Discrete Quantity: Matrix-Analytic Methods

Cai, Qishu 22 August 2011 (has links)
Shipment consolidation is a logistics strategy whereby many small shipments are combined into a few larger loads. The economies of scale achieved by shipment consolidation help in reducing the transportation costs and improving the utilization of logistics resources. The fundamental questions about shipment consolidation are i) to how large a size should the consolidated loads be allowed to accumulate? And ii) when is the best time to dispatch such loads? The answers to these questions lie in the set of decision rules known as shipment consolidation policies. A number of studies have been done in an attempt to find the optimal consolidation policy. However, these studies are restricted to only a few types of consolidation policies and are constrained by the input parameters, mainly the order arrival process and the order weight distribution. Some results on the optimal policy parameters have been obtained, but they are limited to a couple of specific types of policies. No comprehensive method has yet been developed which allows the evaluation of different types of consolidation policies in general, and permits a comparison of their performance levels. Our goal in this thesis is to develop such a method and use it to evaluate a variety of instances of shipment consolidation problem and policies. In order to achieve that goal, we will venture to use matrix-analytic methods to model and solve the shipment consolidation problem. The main advantage of applying such methods is that they can help us create a more versatile and accurate model while keeping the difficulties of computational procedures in check. More specifically, we employ a discrete batch Markovian arrival process (BMAP) to model the weight-arrival process, and for some special cases, we use phase-type (PH) distributions to represent order weights. Then we model a dispatch policy by a discrete monotonic function, and construct a discrete time Markov chain for the shipment consolidation process. Borrowing an idea from matrix-analytic methods, we develop an efficient algorithm for computing the steady state distribution of the Markov chain and various performance measures such as i) the mean accumulated weight per load, ii) the average dispatch interval and iii) the average delay per order. Lastly, after specifying the cost structures, we will compute the expected long-run cost per unit time for both the private carriage and common carriage cases.

A Study of Screening Mechanism of Steel Mill Equipment Supplier -A Case of Rolling Mill of China Steel Corporation

Lee, Kao-Yuan 03 August 2011 (has links)
Abstract Modernized steel plant belongs to high technique and capital-intensive industry. However, the independent ability of domestic industry in supplying steel plant equipment is so limited. Hence, almost all the equipment of steel plant are provided by foreign supplier. How to assure the big investment of project could be successful eventually, the selection of qualified equipment supplier becomes critical. The evaluation of equipment supplier is so difficult due to too many factors to be considered. Today, the evaluation by personal subjective thinking can¡¦t be applied to the assessment of both technique and non-quantifiable factors. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a wide, comprehensive and practical approach for the evaluation of equipment supplier. This research adopt AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) to construct multiattribute decision-making mode. Then, by using the decision-making process to evaluate the equipment supplier. So that such a decision-making behavior is more objective and integrity, and the sequence of priority of equipment supplier can be referred by decision making level. This decision making model is to be applied to the actual case-China Steel Corporation NGO (Non-Grain Oriented) electric steel project which is currently proceeded on. This research will evaluate and distinguish the priority of potential equipment supplier. The top three will be selected for final run of the bidding. Trust the above-mentioned method for selection of equipment supplier is quite in order. It not only helps to reduce the risk but it also increases both efficiencies and quality of decision making. Through study, we acknowledged that equipment technology management is the most important item. Per priority and weight in whole evaluation factors, the top five are selected. Finally, the top three equipment suppliers in NGO project are selected as well.
