A ritualização do ensino Acadêmico, havia atingido o seu apogeu. O estilo neoclássico é o que predominava nas Academias de artes neste século. Fazia-se presente, a cada ato, a autoridade masculina, colocando dificuldades à mulher de se projetar nas artes. Neste contexto, apresentamos a biografia da artista Abigail de Andrade, precursora do Realismo Social - forma de expressão usada pela artista. O enfoque dado busca a sua visão de mundo e o sentimento próprio de uma determinada época. Enfatiza temas extraídos do cotidiano dos segmentos menos favorecidos na escala social. Seus trabalhos se definem pelo recolhimento e conservação de elementos básicos que coleciona através de mensagens pré transmitidas e que, quando há necessidade, lança mão destes conhecimentos para a execução da obra. / It features the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the XIX century, was proeminent for the introduction and development of formal apprenticeship of the fine arts. As a consequence, Brazil became an important center of artistic production in the Americas. It was in this city that strict ritualism of academic teaching reached its peak, imposing neoclassicism as a predominant style. As masculine authority ruled society, it was difficult for women to exceed in the fine arts. In this context, we present the biography of the artist Abigail de Andrade, precursor of Social Realism was this painter's forro of expression and style and was used to convey her views of the world and her feelings and concerns for those less fortuna te in society. Ready to carry out any artistic challege regarding the painter's craft, but she often resorted to the use of a preconcieved technique and iconographical repertoire drawn frorn the Acaderny.
