Ant Colony Optimization is a relatively new meta-heuristic that has proven its quality and versatility on various combinatorial optimization problems such as the traveling salesman problem, the vehicle routing problem and the job shop scheduling problem. The paper introduces an Ant Colony Optimization approach to solve the problem of determining a job-sequence that minimizes the overall tardiness for a given set of jobs to be processed on a single, continuously available machine, the Single Machine Total Tardiness Problem. We experiment with various heuristic information as well as with variants for local search. Experiments with 250 benchmark problems with 50 and 100 jobs illustrate that Ant Colony Optimization is an adequate method to tackle the SMTTP. Do we always have to be lost in the halls of a big school on an already stressful first day of class? This paper has evaluated a prototype indoor navigation system that uses a ANT wireless protocol. The protocol has been placed into nodes (small electrical devices, hardware) which are then placed around an area of interest (a map), like beacons, using RSSI (signal from the nodes) to help determine where the subject is located. The mobile application is made specific to Android with a search algorithm that is based off of vector analysis with weighted percentages. The idea being that if the position of each node is available, knowing the location between the nodes should be easily achievable. The nodes were build successfully along with an android application to verify each nodes functionally and see the nodes RSSI values. The algorithm works as expected but due to several factors was not able to be fully realized. In the actual test the system results where slow and did not update in real time. It was found that the ANT protocol does not have a fast packet reception when using the continuous scan feature made available by ANT. The results of the search algorithm were not good enough for a real time indoor navigation prototype. The search algorithm was slow. The system needs more inputs to accurately locate a subject indoors.

The Project dealt with the development of settlement pattern and the irrigation system in Samarkand oasis. The main topic of the research is the dating of the Dargom canal, the main water supply of Samarkand in the ancient times as well as today. The Project provided a new hypothesis on the chronology of Dargom, dated back to the Early centuires of the Current Era, in relation with the different phases of the settlement patterns. The researches were carried out with several international teams and schoalrs belonging to several disciplines.

Lo scavo della chiesa di Santa MAria Maggiore ha permesso di acquisire nuove importanti informazioni sulla storia della città di Trento, sulla città tardo antica e sul processo di cristianizzazione. Il primo impianto ecclesiastico, datato a dopo la metà del V d. C. secolo, sorge su un precedente impianto termale realizzato intorno al II secolo d. C. ed appare caratterizzato da un forte carattere monumentale. La chiesa, a tre navate, presentava un presbiterio rialzato decorato in una prima fase da un opus sectile poi sostituito nel VI secolo da un mosaico policromo. Sono state rinvenute inoltre, parti consistenti della decorazione architettonica di fine VIII secolo pertinente questo stesso impianto che non subirà importanti modifiche fino alla realizzazione del successivo edificio di culto medievale, meno esteso e dai caratteri decisamente meno monumentali, caratterizzato dalla presenza di un esteso campo cimiteriale rinvenuto a nord della chiesa. A questo impianto ne succede un terzo, probabilmente a due navate, e dalla ricca decorazione pittorica demolito in età tardo rinascimentale per la realizzazione della chiesa attuale. / The excavation of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore allowed us to gain important information on the history of the city of Trento during the Late Antiquity and the process of Christianization. The first church, of the second half of Vth century AD, stands on a previous thermal structure built around the IInd century AD and is characterized by a strong monumental character. The church, with three naves, presented a raised presbytery, decorated (during the first phase) with an opus sectile then replaced in the VIth century by a polychrome mosaic. Were also found major parts of the architectural decoration of late VIIIth century, belonging to this same system, which won't be significantly modified until the completion of the subsequent medieval religious building, much less extensive and with less monumental aspect, characterized by the presence of an extensive cemetery found at north of the church. The third structural phase, organized in two naves, had rich fresco decorations, and was demolished in the Late Renaissance to build the present church.

Il presente lavoro, dal titolo Ambigue presenze: donne e affari politici in Atene fra VI e V secolo, consta di nove capitoli, preceduti da un’introduzione e seguiti dalle conclusioni e si configura come un’analisi di figure femminili di rango, vissute ad Atene fra VI e V secolo a.C. . L’elaborato presenta una selezione di donne di famiglie illustri o legate, da vincoli di diverso tipo, a uomini celebri della politica ateniese del suddetto periodo e si prefigge lo scopo di indagare l’incidenza che alcune di queste figure femminili ebbero nella vita politica ateniese del loro tempo. La personalità e la funzione di queste donne, nel contesto in cui sono vissute, sono state ricostruite attraverso le tracce della loro esistenza e le scarse notizie sulle loro origini familiari, rintracciabili nella documentazione storiografica ed epigrafica, nella commedia, nelle opere di carattere didattico-filosofico e nei lessici più tardi. Questo lavoro ha permesso di concludere che nell’Atene classica sono esistite donne con rilevanza politica, anche se si è trattato per lo più di figure di supporto, cioè che hanno contribuito alle attività pubbliche attraverso i legami matrimoniali che sono stati, attraverso di loro, creati. Accanto a queste, sono state però individuate almeno due figure, Elpinice e Aspasia, che agirono direttamente sulla scena politica e i cui comportamenti anticonvenzionali, procurarono loro una pessima fama tra i contemporanei, ma contribuirono a renderle un interessante oggetto di studio per i moderni. / The present dissertation, entitled Ambigue presenze: donne e affari politici in Atene fra VI e V secolo consists in nine chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. It shows a selection of women coming from famous families or anyhow joined to well known men in the Athenian policy of those times. This essay aims to analyse female figures of high social standing, who lived in Athens between the VI and the V century B.C. and has the purpose to investigate their incidence in the Athenian political life in their times. These women’s personality and function, in the contest which they lived in, were rebuilt thanks to evidences of their existence and to the few information about their family origins, that we got from historiographic and epigraphic documentation, comedies, didactical-philosophical works and latter lexica. This work led to the conclusion that in classical Athens there was women with an importance in the policy, even if they often was supportive figures, who partecipated to public life only through nuptial ties they created. Besides them, there was two other figures, Aspasia and Elpinice, who directly operated in political life and whose unconventional conduct provided them with a bad reputation among contemporaries but make them an interesting subject for modern scholars’ studies.

Lo scavo di Santa Maria Maggiore a Trento ha permesso di mettere in luce strutture precedenti fino al I sec. d.C. . Di queste, il presente lavoro ha analizzato quelle riferibili agli edifici sacri, di cui il primo costruito nella seconda metà del V sec. d.C. . Lo studio dell'edificio è stato utilizzato per cercare di comprendere le modalità con cui è avvenuta la monumentalizzazione dei luoghi di culto a Trento, e le dinamiche di interazione tra comunità religiosa e autorità civile. / The excavation of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Trento allowed us to bring to light previous archaeological structures until the I B.C.. This thesis analized the structures that can be referred to the previous churches, the first built in the second half of the 5th century. The data has been studied in order to understand how the first monumental christian buildings were built in Trento, and the methods of the interaction between the christian community and the constituted authority.
