A study in grey : grey literature and archaeological investigation in England 1990 to 2010Donnelly, Victoria January 2016 (has links)
Through an examination of the processes and influences on the character of grey literature and its producers, this thesis explores the nature of archaeological investigation, how it is reported and the creation of archaeological data in England from 1990 to 2010 and the implications for future understanding of the English archaeological record. I intend to address broad research questions regarding grey literature and archaeology: What is grey literature? Who creates it and why? What is it meant for? Is it fit-for-purpose? My research objectives in studying grey literature reporting and archaeological fieldwork investigation in England are: •To explore the nature of archaeological grey literature reporting and its producers, the framework of its production and communication, and its impact on archaeological research and knowledge production; •To capture the developments and changes in English archaeological practice between 1990 and 2010 and their implications for the creation and understanding of the archaeological record; and •To consider potential future directions for archaeological fieldwork and reporting. I propose to achieve this using a combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches including spatial analysis techniques, comparative analysis at a range of scales from England-wide to individual case study areas, and detailed analysis of the nature and actual content of grey literature reports alongside a characterisation of the many creators of grey literature reporting. This study will illustrate and explore the process of producing grey literature reporting as well as examining the end product itself - grey literature reports. This European Research Council funded DPhil research was undertaken within the context of the English Landscapes and Identities Project, which analyses change and continuity in the English Landscape from the middle Bronze Age (c.1500 BC) to the Domesday survey (c. AD 1086).

No / Rosemary Joyce’s research in gender archaeology and archaeologies of the body and identity have not only impacted on our interpretations of the body and identity in the past, but have contributed vastly to our understandings of epistemologies of academic practice, particularly with relation to addressing the androcentric and hetero-normative frameworks in which the disciplines of archaeology and anthropology have traditionally operated. Furthermore, through reassessing ways of viewing, researching, and interpreting the past, Joyce and her contemporaries have changed the face of archaeological theory, method and practice, pre-empting current theoretical concepts (for instance, Ingold’s ‘meshworks’ and Hodder’s ‘entanglement’ theories as lenses for interpreting the past (and the present)) by over twenty years. This paper explores Joyce’s contribution in redressing our epistemologies, which influence our understanding of the past, and impact on archaeological research and practice. For instance, recognition of multiple narratives and the democratization of the archaeological voice have created new understandings and interpretations of our archaeological record. Taking a case study of an archaeological field school and research excavation, the Ardnamurchan Transitions Project, this paper explores how an approach grounded in feminist ways of seeing the world, and a democratization of communication, impact on student learning, both in the field and the classroom, and ultimately, in our archaeological interpretations and understanding. Crucially, this paper also highlights that our discipline has some way to go in realizing the foundations laid by Joyce and her contemporaries.

( esky) Základním úkolem je vyhodnocení archeologických výzkum provedených na ran st edov kém hradišti Vraclav (okr. Ústí nad Orlicí) do roku 1963. Základním pramenem budou nálezové vypracované L. Hrdli kou a L. Skružným uložené v archivu Archeologického ústavu AV R, Praha, v. v. i. Hlavním úkolem je shromážd ní dostupné terénní dokumentace z dosud provedených výzkum a vyhodnocení jednotlivých sídlištních a poh ebních komponent s cílem rekonstrukce jejich uspo ádání na akropoli hradišt . Diplomantka se zam í p edevším na rozsah poh ebišt a rekonstrukci zachycených stavebních konstrukcí. Zpracování a vyhodnocení terénních nálezových situací bude provedeno v prost edí GIS. P i zpracování movitých nález bude v nována pozornost zejména výb ru keramických soubor klí ových pro vývoj hradišt .
