The design of an arts and design centre in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

Venter, Carina. January 2013 (has links)
M. Tech. Architecture (Professional) / This thesis encompasses the research and subsequent building design of a Design Centre in Sunnyside Pretoria that specializes in the Applied Arts. This educational training facility will form part of a larger arts precinct. This can be achieved by integrating the immediate surrounding areas in a similar manner as that of Arts on Main in Johannesburg. The proposed project is located in an existing (but not fully developed) arts and design precinct in Sunnyside known as Oeverzicht Arts Village. The anchor facility of this complex will be the Design Centre, offering training and education in Industrial and Product Design, Fashion and Footwear Design, Cabinet making or Joinery, as well as other related arts for approximately 240 students. In light of the above approach, the project also entails the design of the surrounding public spaces, as well as the design of the complex as a precinct within the urban context. The site is located on a prominent corner where Berea, Sunnyside and the Central Business District intersect; it is located on the Nelson Mandela corridor which is one of the main arterial routes that feed the city. There is a cluster of residential buildings that were retained from the 1950's when most of the Sunnyside residential buildings were demolished to accommodate high-rise residential developments. These houses have a unique character within the urban context, which is currently obscured because of their scale compared to the surrounding buildings. The placing of the new development on the corner of the site gives it the necessary historical prominence within the current urban context.

Aproximações sobre a obra de Salvador Candia / An approach to the work of Salvador Candia

Eduardo Rocha Ferroni 09 May 2008 (has links)
The present work gives an overview of the oeuvre of Salvador Candia (1924-1991), Brazilian architect who practised primarily for the construction market of the city of São Paulo from the 1950s to the 1980s. In order to carry out the investigation, the material left behind from the architects office was collected, organized and pre-catalogued in fact sheets about built and unbuilt projects; the archives are kept at the architectural school Escola da Cidade in São Paulo. Being based on these records, on complementary biographical information, and on statements given by architects and people who worked with and lived alongside Candia, the present work tries to position his oeuvre within a broader context of modern architecture in São Paulo. The first chapter regards the period of the architects training and education, as well as the ties and work partnerships, which he formed since the early days of his professional career. The second chapter deals with the emerging of new functional programmes in the São Paulo metropolis, mainly from the 1940s and 1950s onward, and the way in which architects tried to solve them at the time, these occurrences being a determining factor for the henceforth practice of Salvador Candia. The third chapter presents a selection of issues that are considered particularly relevant in his work. The fourth chapter gives a description of three selected projects referring to the issues raised in the previous chapter. Finally, annexed to the current work are the fact sheets of the projects, which have been surveyed during the research and a number of texts by the architect.

Termo de referência para gestão de projetos arquitetônicos de terminais aeroportuários regionais de passageiros / Term of reference for managing of architectural projects of regional passenger terminal airport.

Silvestri, André Luis Sampaio 07 March 2016 (has links)
In the last decades, the rapid advancement of the national airport sector, due to the economic and population growth, exposed the infrastructure and the Brazilian air transportation route, making the airports limited to the housing poles with better structure. The increase in the transported passenger flow on the airline sector, in this moment, has compelled the planning and construction of the public sector for the expansion of the airport passenger terminals, named in the aeronautical environment as TPS. The observation of the impact and the interaction between the decisions of the architectural design, amount and dynamic of the informations, national and international rules and legislation, which are continually being updated and unbalanced, create determining factors in the design and constructive process. The motivation on the elaboration of this thesis is to fill the gap, regarding the scarcity of studies in Brazil which aim specifically the process of architectural design on the TPS. To make the research the Design Science Research (DSR) method was used, aiming to help architecture designers and design coordinators on the project management of regional airport passenger terminals. The thesis development has been based on the analysis of domestic and Brazilian regional airport passenger terminals, which is a result of the author expertise on the area, on the national and international literature review of this sort of building. A structured terms of reference was created as a result, for the planning of the process of architectural design contemplating elements for the management of program requirements, design flow, coordination and compatibility of the architectural design with the other specific designs, legislation, rules, agents, institutions, concessions, and public agencies, providing basic guidelines for the process of TPS design.

Centro de día y residencia para el adulto mayor en Reque, Chiclayo / Day and residence center for the elderly in Reque, Chiclayo

Oblitas Santillán, Viviana de Fátima 16 September 2019 (has links)
The thesis analyses the development of a Day and Residence Center for the Elderly, aimed at the population of the Reque district and nearest districts, as a proposal for revaluation of senior citizens in society. The most important issue focuses on the elderly population, because in Peru and the world, the increase in the older adult population has become a demographic feature and a challenge for society. Likewise, for the development of the project, the study of reference examples, chosen by the architectural typology, was carried out with an emphasis on the study of conceptualization, form, function and technological aspects that identify them; an analysis of the user was performed as well as where the project will be developed. The research belongs to two architectural typologies, both aimed at the elderly: Day Center and Gerontological Residence, emphasizes the relationship between the interior and exterior of the environment, the use of typical technologies of the area and as a social meeting place between older adults, family and the population. This research seeks to ensure that the long-lived population finds an answer to the changes in their needs and demands, including those of the architectural aspect. The Senior Day and Residence Center will contribute in helping promote levels of well-being in seniors. / Tesis

The design of a public swimming pool for Pretoria Central.

Myburgh, Juan Pierre. January 2014 (has links)
M. Tech. Architecture (Applied) / The aim of the thesis is to design a public swimming pool that re-connects street and river within a particular urban condition. The ground plane of the selected site is manipulated to facilitate a physical and visual connection with the river. Wetlands form part of the landscape surrounding the facility and on urban scale to assist in the cleaning and re-use of water from the canal. The proposal includes two pools accommodating different human interactions with water. The buildings are designed as a transitional space between inside and outside. The site was carefully selected based on the mix of current educational facilities, offices and residential accommodation. The site was developed using various layers namely: Private swimming, public swimming, spill out spaces, as well as spectator and passer-by contact. It is envisioned that the proposal will form part of the larger Tshwane 2055 framework aiming to revitalize the Pretoria CBD, although canalized, the Aapies River forms an important life giving artery adjacent to the Nelson Mandela Corridor. As part of the design proposal, it is envisioned that the canal be used as a floating walkway in future with follies linking specific sites and the river at strategic points. The proposed lap pool adheres to international standards. Both the pools step towards the canal, providing a different spatial and sensory experience. The design may serve as a guideline for future proposals along the canal. URBAN SWIMMING must inspire social growth and promote swimming as both a sport and a recreational activity.
