Stockholm on the edge : Defining quality in the red-green interface of Årsta / Stockholm på kanten : Definierar kvalitet i det röd-gröna gränssnittet i Årstade Boer, David January 2018 (has links)
One of Stockholms great qualities is the large amount of green areas in the city. Yet the city needs to densify. Such is the case in the residential neighbourhood Årsta, where the popular Årstaskogen, an urban woodland, may have to make way for new housing, meaning a redefinition of the red-green interface of the area. This study involves a series of methods (literature review, document analysis, semi-structured interviews and research-by-design) through which the definition of quality in this interface is defined. Typologies of both interfaces and the motivators of quality in both residential neighbourhoods and urban woodlands were created. These typologies were linked to the qualitative perceptions of the green-red interface of the interviewees, and some were translated into visualised design approaches. The research showed that perceptions of quality are multi-interpretable and can be linked to certain types of interfaces in multiple ways, making a definition of quality arbitrary in this case.

Layers of Office / Kontor i flera lagerÖstergren, Hannah January 2018 (has links)
Some projects have lower status than others. Designing an en-tire custom building is an architectural opportunity while interior projects in existing, generic structures, have a tendency to leave architects disappointed. Instead of designing the whole we must contend with the existing, making a seemingly decorative addition. The architectural potential in these projects is often discarded - I believe it shouldn’t be. This thesis investigates possibilities in office transformations. I combine an existing column-beam struc-ture with a colourful interior of spatial modules and use AR to add a virtual layer to a physical office. A flirt between the permanent, transient and virtual. The project aims to create what Sylvia Lavin describes as an architectural kiss in Kissing Architecture from 2008: qualities, tension and surprising moments in the merge be-tween multiple systems of architecture, or other medium of art, that are not perfectly aligned. The design proposal consist of a 700 m2 office locale in a larg-er office /warehouse complex in Ulvsunda Industrial area west of Stockholm. The original structure consist of pre-cast concrete columns and beams. The office is prone to changes in technology. With the digital technology we have available it is no longer essential to have a physical office: employees can log on to a digital work-place from any device with a connection. This project takes a stand for the physical office and works with the claim that the office is an important organisational hub. However, today it needs to offer more than rows of desks in a white box. The project is first and foremost a physical office proj-ect. I’ve intended to create a characteristic working environment within an exististing frame using design inspiration from computer game environments. I admire the way games can generate entire worlds that support the game’s plot, mission, atmosphere and gameplay. Can similar physical design strategies create an equal-ly characteristic and adapted environment for an office? In order to investigate this I started the research period with three case studies of games from different genres and gradually translated the qualities found in these to architecture - permanent, transient and to some extent virtual.

Peter EIsenman writes in The End of the Classical: The End of the Beginning, the End of the The End; “that the activity of reading architecture, objects and spaces is an activity of recognizing them as a language. Reading, in this sense, makes a level of indication available rather than a level of meaning or expression. Every object, model and drawing, should be made with the awareness that it can be read similar to a text. In other words the objects must have the capacity to reveal themselves as a reading event. The reader is not presumed to know the nature of truth in the object, the reader should be able to use it as a medium.”

Analysis, Survey, and Development Proposal for Runmarö / Analys, Undersökning, och Utveclkingsförslag för RunmaröGergely, L'Aune January 2018 (has links)
The thesis was created with a special aim to propose a possible urban development plan for Runmarö, one of the core islands in the Stockholm archipelago. Therefore, a historical and spatial analysis, a survey, and a proposal for further development of Runmarö were also conducted as part of this thesis. With the help of the survey, attitudes, habits, and openness to various developments among permanent residents and holiday home owners on Runmarö island could be explored. The survey consisted of five main topics tapping into Demographics, Travelling and time spending habits, Pro-environmental attitudes, Place attachment, and Attitudes towards potential urban developments. Taking the findings of the survey, the development strategy of Värmdö municipality, as well as the existing initiatives of the residents into consideration, the thesis offers a proposal for future development. The proposed development plan focuses on four main elements: providing environmental sustainability by defining protected nature areas and suggesting infrastructural improvement in water management; advocating agricultural activities for maintaining the cultural landscape; nurturing nature tourism by improving the wayfinding qualities and proposing amenities such as campsites and shelters; and improving the quality of the public realm by defining community spaces and small-scale plazas at the frequently visited nodes on Runmarö.
