Este trabalho discute a arqueologia da bacia do rio Negro enfocando a região de seu baixo curso, a partir da análise comparativa de dois sítios arqueológicos: Floresta e Lago das Pombas, que estão localizados no Médio Rio Unini. Propõe-se, portanto também uma abordagem comparativa, tendo por base outras regiões melhor conhecidas da arqueologia da Amazônia, a fim de incorporar o Baixo Rio Negro (BRN) às discussões contemporâneas dessa extensa região. Entre as questões discutidas está o processo de ocupação inicial dessas áreas que têm como correlatos a produção das terras pretas de índio (TPI) e as cerâmicas antigas do quadro crono-tipológico da arqueologia da Amazônia: Pocó-Açutuba e Borda Incisa. O objetivo central é buscar meios de responder à abrangente pergunta sobre a forma como se deram os processos de ocupação pré-colonial da região do Baixo Rio Negro e quais as implicações desses processos para a configuração sócio-política regional atualmente visto nessa bacia, que tem como uma das principais características a diversidade na maneira de ocupar os espaços. / The aim of this research is to discuss the archaeology of the Negro River, specially its lower segment, based on the analysis of two archaeological sites: Floresta and Lago das Pombas which are currently found on the middle Unini River. Thus, the proposal is to adopt a comparative approach based on other well know regions throughout Amazonia, allowing the incorporation of the Lower Negro River into the contemporaneous discussions of this vast region. Amongst the discussed issues, it was possible to highlight the initial occupation of these areas, correlated to the appearance of the so called Terra Preta de Índio (TPI or Anthropogenic Dark Earths - ADE) and the early pottery from the chronological-typological framework of Amazonian Archaeology: Pocó-Açutuba and Borda Incisa. The main objective was to seek aims to answer the broad question about the means by which the pre-colonial occupation occurred in the Lower Negro River region, trying to understand the implications of such processes to the regional social-political configuration presently observed in this basin, which has as a main characteristic the diversity in the way of occupying the spaces.
