Defining a non-complex learning object from preschool to upper secondary school

The aim of this article is to analyse the aspects that teachers intend to focus on in teaching mathematics and the students' needs, i.e. what is critical for student learning. The article develops an argument for the importance of identifying the “critical aspects” as a basis for the teachers to promote student learning of Mathematics from preschool to upper secondary school. The article concludes that what teachers believe that students need to be offered concerning a specific content of Mathematics does not correspond to students' needs. Gaps between the intended and the enacted object of learning show that both the way the object of learning is offered and the way this is communicated in a teaching situation could be improved.

Our values are critically tied to our structures of reasoning and to be sure are not the domain, only, of our philosophic community. While working on a Political science internship for the office of Technologry Transfer at Oregon State University, in l989, it occurred to me that little thought was given to the value dimension of researching, developing and transferring new technology into our public and private economic sectors. In evaluating the decisions to conduct research or to introduce into our public services and private commercial businesses, new technologies, the values underlying those technologies and their particular application must become essential criteria of any proposed economic or other justification scheme. This thesis will examine this observation and its ramifications in a business organizational, social, political and public administrative and philosophic context then offer some recommendations and draw some conclusions. / Graduation date: 1994

How does bilingual experience modulate visual processing?

Previous bilingual studies showed reduced hemispheric asymmetry in visual tasks such as face perception in bilinguals compared with monolinguals, which suggested that hemispheric asymmetry in visual tasks could be modulated by experience in reading one or two languages. Here I examined whether differences in hemispheric asymmetry in visual tasks can also be observed in bilinguals who have different language backgrounds. I compared the behavior of three language groups: (1) English monolinguals, who acquire only one alphabetic language, (2) European-English bilinguals, who know two alphabetic languages, and (3) Chinese-English bilinguals, who master an alphabetic language and a logographic language; in three tachistoscopic tasks: (1) English word sequential matching task, (2) Intact-altered face judgment task, and (3) face sequential matching task. The results showed that European-English bilinguals had a stronger right visual field (RVF)/ left hemispheric (LH) advantage in the English word sequential matching task than English monolinguals and Chinese-English bilinguals, suggesting that different language learning experiences can influence how visual words are processed in the brain. However, the results showed no group difference between the left visual field (LVF)/ right hemisphere (RH) advantage in the intact-altered face judgment task and the face sequential matching task. These results suggested a modulation of language experience on visual word processing but not on face processing. In addition, I showed that the hemispheric asymmetry in visual word processing could be accounted for by a computational model that implements a theory of hemispheric asymmetry in perception (i.e. the Double Filtering by Frequency theory, Ivry & Robertson, 1998); the modeling data suggested that this lateralization difference in visual word processing may be due to both the difference in participants’ vocabulary size and the difference in word-to-sound mapping between alphabetic and logographic languages. / published_or_final_version / Psychology / Master / Master of Philosophy

Over the decades the concept of green consumption has been discussed with sustainable consumption, green behavior, eco-citizenship and sustainable patterns and lifestyles. Various environmental problems like global warming, pollution, shortage of natural resources and climate change threatened the sustainability of the environment and our survival. There is an increasing demand from scholars and society for the change of human behavior to help reduce the environmental impact. This study aims to investigate how supermarket influences the daily consumption in a sustainable way through the concept of green marketing in terms of green product management, green packaging, green promotion, green pricing, green logistics and green labeling. That means, a supermarket is not only a place to provide green products but also influence the culture of green consumption through the efforts of designing environmentally friendly facilities and strategies. In real life practice, there are constraints and challenges to encourage green consumption in the community. Through literature review, interview and surveys, the study investigates the kinds of products and facilities which have been used in Hong Kong supermarkets and consumers’ perception and knowledge of environmentally friendly products and services. Through exploration of overseas case studies, insights on common sustainable practices were identified and how overseas’ best practices can be adopted or modified in Hong Kong were discussed. The surveys with Wellcome/Three Sixty/MarketPlace by Jasons and the general public illustrate how supermarket can promote sustainable and green consumption in Hong Kong and the progress of achievement. The study ends with suggestions on how joint-efforts from the various stakeholders in the society can facilitate green consumption. Genetic and genomic mapping of common diseases

 Genome-wide mapping of susceptibility genes was conducted in two complex disorders of hypertension and epilepsy, allowing the dissection of the genetic architecture of these common diseases and related quantitative traits. The study performed comprehensive genetic analyses in a genome-wide scale, using different structure of data – sib-pairs and case-control samples. To identify genes influencing hypertension and blood pressure, a combined linkage and association study was conducted using over half a million SNPs genotyped in 328 siblings. Regions of significant linkage were identified for blood pressure traits on chromosomes 2q22.3 and 5p13.2, respectively. Further family-based association analysis of the linkage peak on chromosome 5 yielded a significant association (rs1605685, P < 7  10-5) for hypertension. One candidate gene, PDC, was replicated in the family-based association tests. A two-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed in a total of 1,087 cases and 3,444 controls, to identify common susceptibility variants of epilepsy in Chinese. The combined analysis identified two association signals in CAMSAP1L1, rs2292096 [G] (P=1.0×10-8, OR =0.63) and rs6660197 [T] (P=9.9×10-7, OR=0.69), which are highly correlated, achieving genome-wide significance. One SNP (rs9390754, P = 1.7 × 10-5) in GRIK2 was refined as a previously-implicated association. In addition to SNPs, the assessment of CNVs in GWAS was performed, which could provide valuable clues to discover genes contributing to the heritability of epilepsy. A genome-wide scan for epilepsy through the use of DNA pooling also provides an alternative approach to reducing the substantial cost and thus increase efficiency in large-scale genetic association studies. Genome-wide association analyses on complex diseases: from single-nucleotide polymorphism to copy numbervariation

Complex diseases, unlike Mendialian diseases, are often characterized by genetic heterogeneity and multifactorial inheritance, involving defects in genes from the same or multiple alternative pathways. Many congenital diseases and psychiatric disorders are complex diseases, and incur heavy health care burden on the society. With the advancement in high-throughput genotyping technologies and the availability of the human single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) catalogue, genome-wide association study (GWAS) has been widely used to investigate the genetic component of complex diseases. Copy number variations (CNV) can also be identified using the data from the same SNP array. Aiming to identify more disease susceptibility loci for complex diseases, separate GWAS using a case-control design were conducted on anorectal malformations (ARMs) and schizophrenia. ARMs are rare congenital diseases with heterogeneous phenotypes which could probably be explained by the genetic heterogeneity among patients, while schizophrenia is a common psychiatric disorder that is well known for its multigenic inheritance. The GWAS studies on ARM and schizophrenia included 4,369 (patients: N=363; controls: N=4,006) and 1,231 Han Chinese (patients: N=381; controls: N=850) respectively. The two studies were mainly focused on investigating the contribution of rare CNVs to the diseases, involving analyses on global CNV burden, rare CNV association, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, pathway and chromosomal aberrations. The associations of SNPs with ARMs were also examined. Apart from elucidating the genetic components in these two diseases, a systematic analysis on four CNV detection programs (CNV partition, PennCNV, QuantiSNP and iPattern) was also undertaken. In the study of schizophrenia, a new approach in CNV filtering which was based on latent class analysis was adopted to gather information from multiple CNV prediction programs. The study of ARMs revealed 79 genes which were disrupted by CNVs in patients only. In particular, a de novo duplication of DKK4 (an antagonist of WNT signaling) was identified, and addition of Dkk4 protein was demonstrated to cause ARMs in mice. Another 10 genes uniquely disrupted in ARMs patients are also related to WNT signaling. Interestingly, this pathway was also significantly inferred by CNV in patients with schizophrenia. A different set of genes related to WNT signaling was disrupted in ARMs patients and patients with schizophrenia. WNT signaling is crucial for the development of multiple parts in the embryo. The contribution of different WNT signaling pathways at different development stages may vary. Apart from the WNT signaling pathway, other genes with biological relevance were also implicated in the two studies through gene-network and pathway analyses. The results from these two GWAS studies support our existing understanding of complex diseases that defects in various interacting genes could contribute to the same disease. In summary, the CNV results from the two studies have demonstrated the genetic heterogeneity nature of these two complex diseases. Habitat loss and fragmentation under urbanization: the spatio-temporal dynamics of causes, processes andconsequences at landscape level

Landscape modification, especially those human-dominated changes, has been widely considered as one of the key drivers inducing the degradation of environment and ecosystem. The consequent habitat loss and fragmentation, which are closely related to ecological process, have attracted much scholarly attention. However, very few studies have systematically examined their causes and consequences at the landscape level. Integrating human activities into consideration in a holistic way remains poorly understood in particular. This thesis reports a systematic study of habitat loss and fragmentation under urbanization. This research distinguishes itself from previous works in its investigation of the spatio-temporal dynamics of causes and consequences of habitat loss and fragmentation, and its endeavor to disentangle habitat fragmentation from simple habitat loss in terms of their processes and effects. The Shenzhen River cross-border watershed, shared by Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Shenzhen, is used as a case to illustrate how these ideas can work in practice. The study period spans from 1988 to 2008.The main contents of the study include analysis of the processes and causes of habitat loss and fragmentation, and dynamic consequences on water quality and ecosystem services for biodiversity conservation at spatial and temporal scales. Various methods are employed, mainly including conventional and newly developed landscape metrics (such as the Urbanization Isolation Effect (UIE) and Habitat Isolation Degree (HID)), a spatial statistical approach based on the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model, spatio-temporal analyses and cross-border comparison. Major findings of the research are highlighted as follows. First, habitat loss and fragmentation show great spatial heterogeneity as well as temporal variation due to extensive and rapid urban sprawl in the study area. Second, by adopting the GWR model, it is found that human-related factors have played a significant role in determining not only the “amount” but also the “location” of habitat loss. Third, by using two new landscape metrics, namely the UIE and HID, both the extent (urban sprawl) and intensity (population density) of urbanization are suggested to have significant influences in habitat isolation. Fourth, water quality in the watershed is recognized to be closely correlated with habitat loss and fragmentation, and the correlations show major discrepancies between the Hong Kong and the Shenzhen sides. Moreover, by proposing a compound indicator (NP/MPS) for measuring habitat fragmentation (independent of simple habitat loss), it is found that habitat loss has exerted a bigger influence on water quality degradation than habitat fragmentation. Fifth, by integrating habitat connectivity into the evaluation of ecosystem services for biodiversity conservation, both the habitat size and connectivity are recognized to be important in explaining the degradation of ecosystem services value. Habitat size has played a dominant role in the overall change of ecosystem services value, whereas the role of connectivity (fragmentation) is more critical when the “stepping stones” sites are lost. The study provides a new framework to examine the habitat loss and fragmentation under urbanization at the landscape level.
