The efficacy of Phosphorus 6CH in treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorderCockcroft, Donna Kathryn 01 September 2008 (has links)
This research was conducted to determine the effect of Phosphorus 6CH on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Phosphorus 6CH is a simplex homoeopathic preparation that through repertorisation of DSM-IV diagnostic criteria of ADHD is found to be well indicated for this disorder. Homoeopathic trials have been conducted previously on complex homoeopathic preparations (Strauss, 1998; Smith, 2001) and have shown overall improvements in the symptoms of ADHD. The use of a simplex homoeopathic remedy has not been effectively documented prior to 2004. ADHD is a commonly diagnosed childhood disorder characterised by inattention, impulsivity, and possibly hyperactivity. Current management of this disorder is predominantly through the use of highly scheduled central nervous system stimulants, which may produce unwanted and serious side effects, and in some children may produce no response at all. A double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial was conducted. Children between seven and eleven years of age with pre-diagnosed ADHD and taking no other medication for the disorder were included in the trial. Children were randomly assigned to either the medication or the placebo groups. Evaluations were conducted by means of the Barkley and DuPaul Teacher Rating Scale (BDTRS), completed by the child’s teacher, the Parent Symptom Questionnaire (PSQ), completed by the child’s parent or guardian, and the Children’s Checking Task (CCT), completed by the child. Evaluation was conducted before the trial, weekly after two weeks of liquid administration, and again a week after cessation of treatment. Statistical analysis revealed significant improvement in both the BDTRS and the PSQ scores, with the placebo group also showing improvement, although not to as significant a degree as the experimental group. In the CCT, no significant improvement was seen in the total scores of the tests, although there was significant improvement in the time taken to complete the tests. Because of the placebo effect having a large influence on the results of the study, more effective research would need to be done in order to establish whether Phosphorus did in fact account for the more significant improvement found in the experimental group. Further studies need to be conducted on the effect of homeopathic remedies such as Phosphorus, with variable dosage and potency being used. Since all children in the study showed a marked improvement due to the high level of attention met on each child by the teachers and parents involved, it is worth considering a study where no medication is used at all, but where children are given individualised attention and encouragement. It would be a valuable way to assess whether this attention would be sufficient to produce marked improvement in the children over a sustained period of time, or whether the attention given would ultimately no longer be enough but would have to be supplemented with medication. / Dr. Joanne Roohani Mrs. Carolina Henn

A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2004. / The use of drug stimulation to treat children who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) sparks much controversy. Parental perception of this practise is crucial since it is the parents that have the task of making this sensitive decision. In order to subjectively explicate parental feelings regarding this issue, a qualitative approach was considered appropriate in this study. The study sought to highlight the views of parents around the use of stimulant medication in the treatment of ADHD. In- depth interviews of the four participants were audio taped and then transcribed verbatim. The interviews were unstructured and an open- ended question guideline was utilised. The interviews underwent stringent thematic analysis. Amongst others, the major themes that emerged were those of guilt, frustration, resignation and the strained mother- child relations associated with infant behaviour and the diagnosis. Findings revealed mixed feelings around the use of medication with Ritalin being the most commonly prescribed. However, even though there are mixed feelings associated with medication use, the positive outcomes of this practise outweigh the negative aspects. Although the benefits are great, the future risk of long-term use of stimulant medication is unknown

Framing the ADHD child : history, discourse and everyday experienceRafalovich, Adam 11 1900 (has links)
Through employing a two-faceted approach to the sociological study of Attention Deficit-
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), this thesis seeks to further the study of this mental illness and
also to elucidate new methodological directions for the sociology of similar phenomena. Past
approaches in the sociology of mental disorder have considerable merit, but may also be limited
in the type of analyses they offer. One particular limitation concerns sociological accounts of
mental illness that portray the meaning of such illnesses as unified and that this unification
results from the collusion of special interests. Sociologists who address mental illnesses as social
problems, for example, appear wont to portray such illnesses as social constructions which arise
from specific agents of labeling. With regard to ADHD, previous sociological accounts often
make a case for the rhetorical and political power of government agencies, medical practitioners,
and pharmaceutical companies. Though such agents are certainly influential in shaping public
conceptions of ADHD, this thesis demonstrates that ADHD is interpreted in various ways. These
assertions are supported through the analysis of two different data sources: 1) textual data; and 2)
interview data.
The textual data for the first part of the thesis comprises the subject matter for a
genealogy of ADHD. Through examining past and contemporary texts that frame this disorder,
including medical journal articles, medical manuals, popular writings, and parental guidebooks,
the author argues that the historical and current discussions of ADHD are replete with differing
interpretations of the causes and treatments for ADHD. These ADHD discourses, as they are seen
through written accounts, offer a variety of perspectives towards the disorder, drawing from
many opposing schools of thought. Most notable in this regard are psychodynamic and
neurological approaches to ADHD. I argue that even though the neurological perspective towards
ADHD appears to be the most dominant in diagnosing and treating the disorder, it is far from
monolithic. '
The second part of the thesis draws upon interview data from sixty-two respondents
associated with cases of ADHD: twenty clinicians, twenty parents, and twenty-two teachers.
Each of these groups of respondents were asked questions designed to solicit their subjective
experiences with the disorder, including how they perceived ADHD children and their sources of
ADHD knowledge. The analysis of such data is placed against the backdrop of the genealogical
part of the thesis. Responses from participants are examined as reflecting ADHD discourses.
Some respondents, for example, demonstrate a commitment to neurological perspectives towards
ADHD, while others gravitate towards psychodynamic or combined understandings of the
disorder.
Through combining these two data sources, this thesis analyzes ADHD discourses that
give rise to conceptions of the disorder and shows how these discourses influence attitudes and
actions towards ADHD. By giving less salience to the collusive relationships between
government agencies, medical practitioners, and pharmaceutical companies, and by putting more
focus on the relationship between the three major groupings directly involved in the ADHD
experience—clinicians, teachers, and parents—this thesis furthers the sociological study of
ADHD.

The Effect of Relationship Support and Parenting Style on Externalizing and Internalizing Behaviors of Children with ADHDWalker, Frances (Frances Ann) 08 1900 (has links)
Influences between quality of intimate heterosexual relationships, parenting style, and externalizing and internalizing behavior problems of children with Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) were examined in a sample of intact and single parent families. The perspective on marital quality was expanded to include an examination of intimate adult relationships within single parent households. Associations between the quality of custodial parents' serious dating and/or cohabiting relationships, parenting style and the behavior problems of children with ADHD were studied. Results from this study found tentative support for previous findings that family functioning may mediate the development of conduct disorders among children with ADHD.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder needs and experiences of parents/caregivers receiving services from a public sector hospital.Naidoo, Preneshnee. January 2010 (has links)
The focus of this study was the exploration of parents and caregivers experiences of
raising children with ADHD and their experiences of services at a public sector hospital.
There is a paucity of scholarly studies conducted on this topic in South Africa. The
context of the study is the public sector hospital where the researcher is employed as a
social worker. Through her interactions with the parents and caregivers of ADHD
affected children she became aware of the challenges that they were exposed to and this
prompted her to undertake the study.
This was a qualitative study and a purposive sample was used. Semi-structured
interviews were conducted with 21 participants and one focus group was conducted as a
method of triangulation, with six participants. This study was guided by two theoretical
frameworks, namely the bio-psychosocial and ecosystems approaches.
The main conclusions drawn from the findings of the study were that many participants
experienced a lack of support from their families and from the hospital. Participants did
not have sufficient knowledge of the comprehensive treatment plan available in the
management of ADHD. Health care professionals failed to engage in mutual decision
making with participants, related to ADHD treatment and they neglected to address the
concerns of participants regarding their children. A further finding was that the referral
process to allied health professionals was inconsistent. Participants also experienced
difficulties with the hospital administrative processes.
Based on the findings, the recommendations include the need for more comprehensive
support which includes medical and psychosocial support for participants. The limited
knowledge base of participants with regard to the nature, causes and the use of
medication for ADHD should be addressed by the health care providers. This could be
achieved through participant education on the disorder at the initial stages of diagnosis.
ADHD should be managed in a more collaborative and co-ordinated manner at the health
