Azerbaijan: Oil-Rich Yet War-TornJoyce-Stringer, Shanae 01 January 2005 (has links)
Prior to my visit to Azerbaijan I had never heard of the country or its conflict. Its existence has been recorded as early as Paleolithic times yet still today very little is known of the country that is rich in history and nationalistic pride. The country has been riddled with territorial wars that even continue today over the region called Nagomo-Karabakh. Azerbaijan's assets and plentiful resources provide the country with political and economic status on a global scale, yet it continues to be overshadowed by its failing foreign policy with Armenia. It is not until the nature of Azerbaijan's foreign policy is restructured, especially in regards to Nagomo-Karabakh, will the nation ever receive the attention and acknowledgement it deserves. It is to be acknowledged that the country has been making strides to globalize its society and emerge as a viable independent country in the twenty-first century. There has been collaboration with other countries both near and far from its borders to provide investments in the country's petroleum production as well as financial assistance for the country as a whole. There is much more work needed to be done in order to classify Azerbaijan as a successful former territory of the Soviet Union. Due to the growing needs for petroleum and natural gas throughout the world Azerbaijan has the potential to equate itself with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. It is hopeful that by managing its oil wealth and outlining domestic and foreign policies so that they are favorable to the country’s existence can Azerbaijan overcome being oil-rich and war-tom.

Population forecast of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the period 2009-2050Verdiyeva, Naila January 2010 (has links)
The main purpose of the study was to produce a population forecast by sex and one-year age groups for the Republic of Azerbaijan for the period 2009-2050. The forecasting process consisted from the several stages, which are included in the general structure of the production process of a forecast. During the data analysis, a number of methods were applied: redistributional methods of intensities, method of reconstruction abridge life tables into complete life tables, application of the Kannisto method to describe mortality in the old ages. The estimated one-year intensities were utilized in the current trends analysis serving as a background for forecasting the parameters of the cohort-component projection model. During the population forecasting the cohort-component projection model was used and population was forecasted in three scenarios (variants). Underlying assumptions were based on analysis of the recent demographic trends and an assessment of their implications for future changes. Keywords: forecast, population development, Azerbaijan

Soviet Azerbaijan and comparative institutional development in the Soviet Southern Tier.Sanchez, James Joseph. January 1988 (has links)
Institutional development is a process that can be analyzed from the bibliometrics of its contingent generation of documentation in the same manner that can be analyzed by historical methods. As institutions grow in resources, the absolute volume of documentation produced rises. In the context of the Soviet Southern Tier, the Russian language documentation bibliometrics for the eight republics image their relative level of institutional development. Comparing the relative levels of documentation to socio-economic variables, the degree to which the documentation is a local product, or a product of All-Union intervention can be determined. Hence, the degree to which institutional development is dependent or autonomous can be gauged for each republic. The analysis of these relationships between the degree to which documentation production is a dependent process, and the relative level of documentation generation, provides an empirical basis for the ranking of regional institutional development. This ranking establishes the framework for a historical description of the relative position of the nationalities of the Southern Tier. This quantitative perspective on Soviet nationality policy parallels the historical process by which the nationalities have been integrated into the Soviet system. The two nationalities most constrained by the nationality policies are the Armenians, with their nationalism and irredentism based on well developed local institutions, and the Uzbeks, with their large population base and historical leadership role in Central Asia. The role of intensively Soviet developed nationalities (Turkmen, Kirghiz, and Karakalpak) in the multi-ethnic system is considered in terms of their moderating the potential for hegemony by the largest nationalities. Azerbaijan SSR emerges as the regional center of a system of measures taken to promote stability and to minimize the prospects of autonomous ethnic hegemony in the Soviet Southern Tier.

A performance guide and comparison of three twentieth-century Azerbaijani flute compositions composed by Fikret Amirov, Arif Melikov, and Tofiq BakihanovHasan, Jeiran Zikretgizi 01 May 2018 (has links)
While there are not many pieces for flute by Azerbaijani composers in the twentieth-century, three of the country’s most famous composers wrote substantial works for the instrument. In this essay, I will discuss Fikret Amirov’s Pieces for Flute and Piano, Arif Melikov’s Concertino for Flute and Piano or String Orchestra, and Tofiq Bakihanov’s Three Flute Sonatas. Due to the collapse of many publishing houses in Azerbaijan after the fall of the Soviet Union, because of the high printing costs and low demand for music during this transitional time, the scores of these pieces are not readily available, resulting in a lack of performance by the newer generations of flutists. Fikret Amirov passed away in 1984, but Tofiq Bakihanov and Arif Melikov are well into their 80s. Given their age, it is critical to be able to work with them now on performance practices of their pieces, before their contributions are lost.
For this essay, I made contact with Arif Melikov and Tofiq Bakihanov, performed for them, and conducted interviews. I also studied the style and ornamentation of Azerbaijani classical music with flute Professor Muzaffar Aghamalizade of the Baku Music Academy. With each piece, the similarities and differences in dynamics, style, terminology, folk-elements, and ornamentation, including trills and grace-notes, in all of the publications will be discussed. All the original editions have been compared to their later published versions.
My goal with this research and topic is to bring these three pieces of music to the attention of the international community while diversifying and expanding the repertoire for flutists.
