The liofilized venoms were diluted in 1 ml saline and administrated subcutaneously into four sheep. Three of the animals died, and the one that received 0. 5mg/kg (B. jararaca) recovered. Clinical signs were observed from 7 minutes to 1 hours after inoculation. The evolution period varied from 7 hours and 9 minutes up to 21 hours and 59 minutes. The symptoms, independent of the dosage, were swelling (hemorrhage/oedema) of the inoculation site, increased bleeding time and capillary filling; tachycardia, dyspnea, hipocorated mucous membranes and diminished reaction to external stimuli in some animals. Laboratory exam revealed pronounced normocytic and normochromic anemia, trombocytopenia, slight reduction of fibrogen and total plasmatic protein, diminished hematocrit in too animals, besides pronounced increase of the creatinaquinase and lactic dehydrogenase. The main findings at necropsy were large hemorrhagic or oedema areas in the subcutaneous tissue of the inoculation site. Besides hemorrhages/oedema, the main histopathologic alteration was hyalinization of muscle fibers and vessels, most severe at the inoculation site. This study it was seen, that the swelling at the inoculation site and adjacency was due to blood, for B. jararaca venom and oedema, for B. jararacussu venom.
