The objective is it of indicating the sport as an element capable to aid in the development of the citizenship perception. The analysis revealed the appropriations of the sport for different initiatives, as strategy for the construction of the citizenship, standing out the participation of the civil society in these initiatives. / Este estudo discute a relação entre o fenômeno esportivo e a construção da cidadania, analisando o papel do esporte na sociedade brasileira e o porquê de o esporte ser considerado um instrumento legítimo para a inclusão social, presente em políticas sociais preventivas, principalmente em áreas de risco social. O objetivo é o de indicar o esporte como um elemento potencialmente capaz de auxiliar no desenvolvimento da percepção de cidadania. A análise revelou as apropriações do esporte por diferentes iniciativas, como estratégia para a construção da cidadania, destacando-se a participação da sociedade civil nestas iniciativas.
