An analysis of spin correlations in <sup>12</sup>C(d,<sup>2</sup>He)<sup>12</sup>B to test the Bell and Wigner inequalities : a tale of two protons

Arising out of the EPR debate, the Bell and Wigner inequalities of quantum theory are experimentally testable relations which address the question of quantum completeness. This thesis provides feasibility results for a fermionic test of the Bell inequality, and the first known attempt to investigate the completeness question through the Wigner relation. Such a test is made possible by the production of an entangled p-p singlet at the KVI research facility in Groningen, the Netherlands, through the reactions 12C(d,2He)12B and p(d,2He)n. The p-p spin-correlations are analyzable via the KVI's 2-pi polarimeter acceptance, which eliminates loopholes common to previous experiments. The results distinguish between a hidden variables and quantum mechanical description of the universe. Also presented is a critique of the GHZ argument against the existence of local hidden variables.

William Bell was an active photographer for more than a half century, successfully making the technical and commercial transitions from the daguerreotype process of the 1840s and 1850s to the collodion processes of the 1860s, 1870s, and 1880s, and finally to the dry plate processes that dominated the medium from the mid-1880s until the time of Bell's death in 1910. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a biography of Bell (1830-1910), to assess his contributions to photography, and to suggest something of the growth of professionalism in nineteenth century photography using Bell as "typical."

Gertrude Bell : an Orientalist in context

This thesis is about the life and work of Gertrude Bell, a British woman born in the late nineteenth century, whose extensive knowledge of Middle East cultures and people won her a job as the Oriental Secretary in Iraq after World War One. Modern historians, including Toby Dodge and Edward Said, consider Bell to be an irredeemable orientalist, one whose work is only ethnocentric and essentialist. Using the work of Billie Melman and Mohja Kahf, my aim is to contextualize Bell's work, and to see if, given the various circumstances in which she worked, a more sympathetic reading is not possible, and if perhaps Said and Dodge are not sometimes guilty of essentialism. I will also examine Said's theories in Orientalism, and though this thesis is in no way an attempt to discredit Said's work, I wish to pose a question; if one can take a small piece of the Orientalist puzzle (Bell's work) and shows that it differs from Said's description, does this undermine the idea of orientalism as a cohesive body of ideas?

Locality, Lorentz invariance and the Bohm model

Non-local forces exist in nature for two reasons. First that the recent experiments on locality are supposed to be accurate enough. Second that there is no local theory that can reproduce all the predictions of orthodox quantum theory which, almost for about a century, have been proved to be correct experimentally again and again. This thesis concerns both of these. A brief discussion of the measurement in quantum theory is followed by two comments which show that the quantum description is frame dependent and that the collapse of the wave-function of a system may occur without the relevant measurement being performed. After this the Bohm model and a modified version of the Bohm model are described. Next we introduce a new method for obtaining the Bell-type inequalities which can be used for testing locality. We derive more inequalities by this method than obtained by other existing procedures. Using Projection Valued(PV) and Positive Operator Valued Measures(POVM) measurements we have designed experiments which violates one of the Bell inequalities by a larger factor than existing violations which in turn could increase the accuracy of experiments to test for non-locality. This is our first result. After discussing the non-locality and non-Lorentz invariant features of the Bohm model, its retarded version, namely Squires' model - which is local and Lorentz invariant - is introduced. A problem with this model, that is the ambiguity in the cases where the wave-function depends on time, is removed by using the multiple-time wave-function. Finally, we apply the model to one of the experiments of locality and prove that it is in good agreement with the orthodox quantum theory.
