A historical-ethnographic account of a Canadian woman in sport, 1920-1938 : the story of Margaret (Bell) Gibson

Laubman, Katherine M. January 1991 (has links)
This study attempted to discover and describe the cultural knowledge and understandings that Margaret (Bell) Gibson derived from her performance as a highly successful athlete in Canadian women's sport during the 1920s - 1930s. A case study approach was used that employed qualitative research strategies. This approach was considered appropriate as prominent issues in women's lives are subtle and context-bound. A series of five informal interviews was conducted with Bell, using an ethnographic approach developed by Spradley (1979). Each interview was recorded and transcribed into text. The text was then validated by Bell, prior to analysis by the researcher. An inductive-reflexive analysis of the text was employed, as much of the information emerged as Bell recalled her experiences in sport. This involved the use of an evolving methodology, which identified classifications of knowledge and structures of thought as they were revealed. Bell's narrative was contextually-grounded in a review of Canadian history from 1920 to 1938, as this seemed to connect Bell's experience as a sportswoman to the broader socio-historical milieu. Findings were substantiated through a process of triangulated inquiry wherein verification was sought from newspaper clippings, official records, and historical documents. The analysis of Bell's narrative revealed a complex system of knowledge based on categories of information related to the structure of sport, social network, jumping, cultural activities, concepts of space and timing, and role definition. Documentation of the major sporting events Bell experienced, as an athlete, was also recorded. Implications for future research were discussed. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate

Maximal LELM Distinguishability of Qubit and Qutrit Bell States using Projective and Non-Projective Measurements

Leslie, Nathaniel 01 January 2017 (has links)
Many quantum information tasks require measurements to distinguish between different quantum-mechanically entangled states (Bell states) of a particle pair. In practice, measurements are often limited to linear evolution and local measurement (LELM) of the particles. We investigate LELM distinguishability of the Bell states of two qubits (two-state particles) and qutrits (three-state particles), via standard projective measurement and via generalized measurement, which allows detection channels beyond the number of orthogonal single-particle states. Projective LELM can only distinguish 3 of 4 qubit Bell states; we show that generalized measurement does no better. We show that projective LELM can distinguish only 3 of 9 qutrit Bell states that generalized LELM allows at most 5 of 9. We have also made progress on distinguishing qubit $\times$ qutrit hyperentangled Bell states, which are made up of tensor products of the qubit Bell states and the qutrit Bell states, showing that the maximum number distinguishable with projective LELM measurements is between 9 and 11.

An Evaluation of Public Relations as Practiced by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company

Gallagher, Eddye S. 08 1900 (has links)
This study presents a detailed analysis of the public relations organization, objectives, and practices of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, Dallas, Texas. Information sources included interviews with telephone company public relations personnel, company publications, and other publications. The five chapters deal with the history and development of the company and its public relations program, and the organization, functions, and operations of the public relations department. With a long and varied history of public relations activities, the company executes numerous activities for employees, customers, educational institutions, the community, stockholders, and the media. The study recommends that the department establish a committee to formulate long-range public relations goals, initiate a management orientation program, and advertise in area high school and college publications.

Creation of polarization entangled states allows experimentally to test fundamental properties of quantum mechanics, such as the EPR argument about the incompleteness of the quantum theory, through CHSH inequality; in addition to potential applications as in quantum computing and quantum cryptography. This work studies a very efficient sourceofphotonentangledstatesofpolarizationbasedonaSagnacinterferometer. These photons are created from a nonlinear PPKTP crystal pumped by fentosecond pulses by theprocessofparametricdown-conversion(PDC)type-IIpumpedbyfemtosecondpulses. Analysing correlations of polarization measurements produced by this source we observed strong violations of Bell inequalities for the polarization states, i.e, CHSH inequality.

No. of bitstreams: 1 rosana_salete.pdf: 751197 bytes, checksum: 71a61923ff314464e47a6964248a4c92 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-12-11 / This present work has like objective to built considerations about the subjects poetic imagens of the time and lyric memory of Catarinense poet Lindolf Bell. The choise by Bell s work justify the relevance of the author s work in the wider board of the literature in the state of Santa Catarina and in Brazil, well as the recognition that his work reached in abroad, in spite to continue little unknown in the university means. The referencial theoretical the subjects of poetic imagens of the time and memory, including, also, correlatives subjects, how is the case of the recurrence at the mythology, the childhood remembrances, and the relation between the poetic construction and the remembrance, subjects that also are approached in the text. It gives attention at the subject of the time and memory because this is a subject recurrent in the literature of all times. The dissertation shows composed by three chapters, being that, in the first, is exposed the social and poetic trajectory from Lindolf Bell, the movements that himself leaded, well as at the other movements in vogue in the period. In the second chapter, observes the lyric and social memory in the poetic of Lindolf Bell and the paper of the poetry in our society. In the third chapter, is analyzed the imaginary and the memory, searching to demonstrate the influence of memory in the poetic doing of Bell, having the myths present in the poems and by the images and symbols used in the poetic building, pointing out that the reconquest of the ancient myths present as a form of last remembrance. It is aimed, still, to observe how the memory theme, in the Bell s lyric, it finds joined at the symbol representation, in other words, the influence that the memory exercises over the images and symbols, which the poet uses. The present bibliographical research is basis in the imaginary Theory, in the Critic and in the Phenomenology, sheltering in the theoretical perspective of authors like Mircea Eliade, Gaston Bachelard, Gilbert Durand, Octavio Paz, Maurice Halbwachs, Eclea Bosi and Alfredo Bosi, Bergson, Halbwachs, Pollak, Paul Ricoeur, and others.
