Master of Arts in Heritage - Heritage Studies / The diamond company De Beers is in the process of re-designing the Kimberley Mine Museum – a site marking the very beginnings of South Africa’s industrial history. The development of the new attraction will be subject to various forces and considerations which will impact on how the museum will reflect the history of the city, of its people, and of De Beers itself.
These forces include the traditional educational function of a museum, the historical functions of displaying social history, possible new political expectations of a more inclusive social history being displayed, the corporate ownership of this attraction, and commercial pressures.
The main aim of the research will be to investigate ways in which an inclusive social history is accommodated in the planning process for the new museum.

This thesis examines various diversity initiatives at the Big Four accounting firms (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC). It begins by establishing the benefits gender and racial diversity can have for firm performance, providing the motivation for firms to implement diversity initiatives. Additionally, it provides an overview of the current state of gender and racial diversity at the Big Four. It then moves into an analysis of general best and worst practices for diversity initiatives. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of diversity initiatives at the Big Four and how they are measuring up to the best and worst practices. While the Big Four do have areas for improvement in their diversity programs, the majority of their initiatives are consistent with the best diversity practices. As a result, the Big Four accounting firms are effectively committing their resources to diversity initiatives that are successfully increasing workplace diversity.

Swordfish Vertical Distribution and Recreational Fishery in the Florida StraitsLerner, Justin David 01 January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is composed of two studies: (1) an assessment of the vertical habitat use of swordfish Xiphias gladius in the Florida Straits; and (2) a systematic description of the southeast Florida recreational swordfish fishery. First, the vertical distribution of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) was assessed in relation to diel cycles and lunar phase from data gathered utilizing popup satellite archival tags (PSATs). Seven tags were deployed in the Florida Straits during this study from recreational and commercial fishing vessels; two fish died shortly after deployment, and the remaining five were included in the analysis. Tags were deployed for periods ranging from 120 to 151 days and recorded data on temperature, depth, and light level every ten seconds. Transmitted data was summarized into one hour histograms. Swordfish vertical distribution in response to diel cycles was characterized by typically spending daytime hours below 500 m and nighttime hours in waters less than 75 m. Swordfish distribution differed significantly in response to lunar phase, with animals occupying successively deeper depths in response to increasing lunar illumination. This study is consistent with the widely accepted hypothesis that the swordfish vertical distribution is a function of ambient light levels. However, in contradiction to this hypothesis was the observation of a number of daytime surfacing events recorded by the tags. This less pronounced but frequent behavior is hypothesized as a mechanism to warm the fish?s body after extended daytime feeding dives to great depths. A recreational fishery targeting swordfish in southeast Florida has gained popularity in recent years. However, little data is currently available on the fishery and its participants. A survey was distributed to recreational swordfish anglers at local swordfish fishing club meetings and a swordfish fishing tournament to describe the fishery and its participants. Questions were organized into four sections: demographics, fishing habits, cost, and views on regulations. A total of 38 surveys were completed by anglers and included in the study. Recreational swordfish fishermen in southeast Florida were mainly Caucasian, with the largest group by percentage ranging from 41-50 years of age. Most fishers surveyed had over 20 years recreational fishing experience, with less than 10 years experience targeting swordfish. Anglers typically fished out of center console boats ranging from 21-35 feet, and usually made less than 50 trips per year. Costs associated with the fishery typically exceed those associated with general recreational saltwater fisheries by thousands of dollars (USFWS, 2006). Fishers were divided in their views on the current recreational swordfish regulations. Forty percent of anglers surveyed were unsatisfied, 37% were satisfied, and 23% remained neutral.

Approaching “Big Data” in Biological Research Imaging Spectroscopy with Novel CompressionChen, Yixuan 10 April 2014 (has links)
This research focuses on providing a fast and space efficient compression method to answer information queries on spectroscopic data. Our primary hypothesis was whether a conversion from decimal data to character/integer space could be done in a manner that enables use of succinct structures and provides good compression. This compression algorithm is motivated to handle queries on spectroscopic data that approaches limits of main computer memory.
The primary hypothesis is supported in that the new compression method can save 79.20% - 94.07% computer space on the average. The average of maximum error rates is also acceptable, being 0.05% - 1.36% depending on the subject that the data was collected from. Additionally, the data’s compression rate and entropy are negatively correlated; while compression rate and maximum error were positively correlated when the max error rates were performed on a natural logarithm transformation. The effects of different types of data sources on compression rate have been studied as well. Fungus datasets achieved highest compression rates, while mouse brain datasets obtained the lowest compression rates among four types of data sources. Finally, the effect of the studied compression algorithm and method on integrating spectral bands has been investigated in this study. The spectral integration for determining lipid, CH2 and dense core plaque obtained good image quality and the errors can be considered inconsequential except the case of determining creatine deposits. Despite the fact that creatine deposits are still recognizable in the reconstructed image, the image quality was reduced.

The study combines the concept of big data with conflict resolution theory and then applies them to three directions of conflict resolution: non-violent, violent, and conflict prevention. Each of the three groups is accompanied by a case study. This method allows a detailed understanding of various aspects related to the resolution of current conflicts using technology and big data analytics. The thesis examines empirical data associated with many innovative projects that have been implemented or are in the process of development for the resolution of ongoing conflicts - UN projects focused on big data collection, technology projects developed by the US state research centers, databases of large amounts of data related to conflicts. Based on the acquired knowledge, this work explores the big data analysis for conflict resolution, its forms, advantages, disadvantages and limitations.
