The reuse of low sulfide mine

Argane, Rabei 07 May 2015 (has links)
Mine tailings represent the finely ground industrial by products generated throw beneficiation of ore minerals. During mine exploitation, these tailings are generally transported in slurry form to large storage facilities, called tailings ponds or impoundments. These facilities are, in most cases, difficult to manage and expensive to rehabilitate. They are responsible for the generation of important environmental impacts and significant ecological disruptions, depending on their pollution potential, management technique, physical stability and the climate conditions. In this context, numerous studies have been conducted to develop new techniques for a sustainable management of mine tailings. The feasibility of reusing some tailings in the construction sector as cementing materials and additives for mortars or concretes were successfully achieved. However, the majority of the conducted studies are still at laboratory stages. Moreover the reuse of tailings as construction material is yet subject of numerous difficulties in term of social acceptance. Various parameters are also of concern, especially the physical and chemical stability of tailings as well as their eco-compatibility. In parallel, the uncontrolled reuse of low sulfide tailings as construction material is increasing in some developing countries (e.g. Morocco). In fact, nearby some abandoned mine sites, these tailings are considered as natural sands and are used for the manufacture of surface finishing mortars. This traditional recycling may constitute mechanical and environmental risks, principally related to tailings mechanical unconformity and to their non-negligible residual metal concentrations. Therefore, the aim of the current research is to evaluate the actual impact of two Moroccan mine tailings (named Zeida and Mibladen), commonly used as aggregates in the Upper-Moulouya region, on the mechanical properties of mortars and on their long term environmental behavior. This work has also as specific aim, to study the technical feasibility of using low sulfide tailings as sand substitute for the manufacture of rendering and masonry mortars. To attain this aim, a thorough characterization of the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties as well as the geochemical behavior of mine tailings was carried out. Mechanical properties of tailings-based mortars were then measured and compared to reference samples (sand-based mortars) using different tests such as setting time, entrained air volume and compressive strength. In parallel, mortars durability and hydration products were evaluated by mean of durability tests (wetting drying cycles, sulfate attack and acid rain simulation) and analytical methods (scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermo-gravimetric analysis). Finally, mortar samples were submitted to various leaching tests to evaluate the pollution potential of these matrices.

Earthen and stone resources as materials of cultures : appearance and diffusion of new building arrangements and materials in North-Eastern Roman Gaul (IInd century BC - IInd century AD)

Delencre, Florent 15 November 2017 (has links)
Roman building materials often arose a growing interest through their presence in early contexts, sometimes way before Gallic Wars. Made from natural resources, their final shape corresponds to anthropogenic and cultural constraints. However, even if building materials are not neglected during archaeological excavations, so far they have been considered as playing a minor part in understanding ancient sites. Economical, technical and architectural aspects are regularly mentioned, creating the picture of an exploited « landscape » around the studied areas, but the question of materials as cultural markers witnessing intercultural relations between Rome and Gallic tribes has never really been considered. The forensic listing of archaeological data for the North-Eastern Gaul highlights distinct rythms for the adoption of new construction habits, which are characterized by peculiar material arrangements echoing Roman administrative limits. Moreover, the diversity of the materials used is linked to the local presence or absence of the required resources for their production. On a wider scale, two groups can be defined by opposed terms : Gallic tribes only concerned by local natural resources for the production of building materials and those who transport them, sometimes over great distances. These elements allow us to discuss the issue about the double aspect of identities (civic and provincial) which can be the source of these discrepancies. In the same time, the geographical area concerned by our multi-scale analysis shows various administrative, social and cultural situations testifying of complex relations maintained with Rome and the Roman culture.

An evaluation of the Phragmites australis reed use by communities neighbouring the Tembe Elephant Park, Maputaland, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Tarr, Jason Alec 30 March 2007 (has links)
The commercial harvesting of Phragmites australis reeds in the Tembe Elephant Park, Maputaland, KwaZulu-Natal was investigated to determine the impact of reed use on the Muzi Swamp. The reed quality in the harvesting areas within the Tembe Elephant Park has deteriorated over time, with the reeds in the harvested areas being by and large shorter and thinner than the reeds in the other areas of the reserve where harvesting is not allowed. The impact of continuous harvesting in combination with the accidental burning of certain areas in the Muzi Swamp was also found to be detrimental to reed production when compared to other treatments. Poor rural communities neighbouring the Tembe Elephant Park are dependant on the reed resource for both income supplementation and for use in the construction of dwellings. Reeds offer a cheaper alternative to the more western building materials, which is of utmost importance in an area where the mean yearly income is around ZAR 6000 per annum. The manufacture of prefabricated reed and forest timber huts by the local reed harvesters in the summer months would facilitate a winter only harvest, which is more beneficial and is integral to the improvement of the long-term reed quality in the Muzi Swamp. In addition, the cost of these proposed prefabricated reed and forest timber huts is approximately one third of the cost of a similar sized hut that is constructed from bricks and cement. Management recommendations for the controlled harvesting area in Muzi Swamp of the Tembe Elephant Park, as well as the section of the Muzi Swamp that is not afforded protection by Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, are also presented. / Dissertation (MSc (Wildlife Management))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Centre for Wildlife Management / unrestricted

Despite of these pathological manifestations, it cannot affirm that, even so the reaction is slow, the ultimate limit state cannot be reached. The occurrence of this phenomenon on blocks foundation is rarely described in literature. Recently was identified in foundations of buildings in the Metropolitan of Recife Region, constituting a problem that comes calling the attention of the community technique and the productive sector of civil construction. The pile caps affected by the AAR must suffer interventions with adequate techniques of recovery to each situation. Inside of that focus, this work presents the results of the attendance of the services of microcement injection in cracks in the blocks of a building in recovery process. It still presents the reinforcement proposal for the pieces of infrastructure affected by expansible reaction. To go accomplished extractions of specimens, cleaning and superficial closing of the cracks with an epoxy mixture and kaolin, application of the microcement inside the cracks and extraction of specimens after the injection for verification of the effectiveness of the fulfillment of the cracks with the injected material. The results can supply important subsidies for repair pile caps damaged for the action of AAR / A reação álcali-agregado afeta a durabilidade e a resistência mecânica das estruturas de concreto, provocando trincas nos elementos estruturais.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Fuad Zarzar_dissert.pdf: 2776007 bytes, checksum: aabaf5bf493a96131a98e3b91918ee12 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-08-16 / This Work, based on parts of the ISO 15686, presents and discuss about a deterministic method, Factor Method (FM), that permits to predict material service life and their components and planning their maintenance and replacement necessary periodicity. The precision of the estimates of this method was analyzed in this Work, and an alternative equation to evaluate service life was developed, using multiple linear regression (MLR), derived from FM pertaining to ISO 15686-1 and especially the Factor Method. The MLR is broadly used to evaluate products that interact with independents variables. Finally, this alternative equation was used to compare its estimate random results with the FM random ones. After evaluating the examples on chapter 4, the Author noticed that the Factor Method is very important to estimate service life of materials and components and the alternative equation too. Two case studies were done in this Work, in the first case the total service life of three collapsed structures were estimated. First a concrete structure similar to a building that was located in the Metropolitan Area of Recife (Brazil) and then the total service life of an balcony from a building located at the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) using both the Factor Method and the alternative equation, and finally the total service life of the basement and superstructure of specific buildings called box from the Metropolitan Region of Recife using the Delphi Method together with the Factor Method was realized too. In the second case, the service life estimation of a softwood window was done using the FM and the alternative equation, other estimations of service life were done the same way by using the alternative equation and the FM. Despite the equations presented in this Work have been developed specifically to estimate service life of materials and components, the estimates showed that the precision of the total service life of the first case approximated to the real case studies, proving the potentiality of the methods / Este Trabalho, baseado nas determinações da norma ISO 15686, apresenta e discute um método determinístico, o Método dos Fatores (MF), que permite estimar a vida útil de materiais e componentes e planejar a periodicidade necessária de manutenção e substituição dos referidos materiais e componentes.

Recuperação estrutural de blocos de fundação afetados pela reação álcali-agregado: a experiência do Recife / Structural recovery of the foundation blocks affected by alkali-aggregate reaction: the experience of Recife

No. of bitstreams: 1 dissertacao_eduardo_alves.pdf: 4097097 bytes, checksum: 9ad4af0b76785acb1b7ae5b0edeb08db (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-12-01 / The first engineering works reported as being affected by Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR) were pavements and bridges in the state of California - USA, in the 1920's. This diagnosis was proposed by Stanton, T.E., in 1940. From then on, many studies had been presented, supporting that hypothesis. From 1940 to nowadays many other countries, including Brazil had been diagnosing hundreds of cases of AAR in many different types of engineering works, mainly in dams. In Recife, Pernambuco, from the year 2000, many occurrences have been identified as AAR in pile caps. Initially they were observed in the basis of industrial cooling towers and in the pile caps of the Pina Bridge. In 2004, occurred in the neighbor city of Jaboatao the rupture of the Areia Branca Building, a 12 storey, 27 yearold, concrete construction, caused by constructive imperfections in the foundation of the columns. Many people that live in buildings worried much about this fact and asked technical inspections in the foundations. About 30 buildings presented various cracks and the cause is attributed to AAR. Because of the absence of registration of similar cases in the international literature and because the theoretical modelling of the problem is not yet satisfactorily solved, the structural engineers have been presenting intuitive solutions. In this paper four examples of solutions for structural repair of pile caps are showed, using in all of them common procedures, like: cleaning and fulfilling the cracks, addition of steel bars and covering the pile caps with a concrete layer in all surfaces. At the end it is talked about the need to increase the pile caps structural analysis, to verify if the AAR is the only responsible for the fissures in the pile caps, or if there are other associated pathologies / As primeiras obras de engenharia que se tem notícia que foram afetadas pela Reação Álcali-Agregado foram pontes e pavimentos no estado da Califórnia, EUA, nos anos de 1920 a 1930.

Silva, Mônica Maria Pereira da 19 October 2007 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2017-06-01T17:57:26Z (GMT).

Analytical Model for Lateral Deflection in Cold-formed Steel Framed Shear Walls with Steel Sheathing

Yousof, Mohamad 12 1900 (has links)
An analytical model for lateral deflection in cold-formed steel shear walls sheathed with steel is developed in this research. The model is based on the four factors: fastener displacement, steel sheet deformation, and hold-down deformation, which are from the effective strip concept and a complexity factor, which accounts for the additional influential factors not considered in the previous three terms. The model uses design equations based on the actual material and mechanical properties of the shear wall. Furthermore, the model accounts for aggressive and conservative designers by predicting deflection at different shear strength degrees.
