Shaoxing hun qing yi shi zhong de tong guan yue

Red lanterns, elaborate bridal sedan, traditional Chinese wind and percussion (chuida 吹打) ensembles, once characterized conventional Shaoxing weddings in the early 20th century. No matter how simple the wedding was, chuida music was a very essential part, which decorated an atmosphere of lively joyance. Since the late 1920s, a newly established western brass band named Xinsheng (New Sound) brought into this county a strikingly different sound, as well as musical practices. In smart military uniform, this band of six, performing a mixed repertoire of Western and Chinese pieces, soon became popular in the weddings of the more affluent class. / As a convenient symbol of Western taste and fashion, this new band positioned itself well by its name "New Sound," an image its members initially wanted to project. However, almost ninety years after its establishment, I have found in my fieldwork that traditional Chinese concepts and practices remalll strong in the brass band's performances and activities. These unique features of border and genre crossing are also the reason why, over the course of a century, the number of brass bands in Shaoxing has increased significantly, and has become an indispensable component of present day weddings. / However, there are some interesting and important questions I want to ask in this thesis: why was the brass band brought into Shaoxing and chosen for the wedding ceremony? How did the band and its repertoire adapt to the Chinese traditional ritual context and appeal to local tastes and aesthetics? What does the brass band's negotiation between Western practices and local culture reveal? In order to answer these questions, this thesis first tracks the band's history and transmission. Then after a chapter of wedding ethnography and a chapter of oral history on traditional wedding, it looks into the function of brass bands and their musIc at weddings, and explores the cultural, historical and political meanings behind them. This paper examines the ways in which musical concepts of local people influence the Western brass bands, performers and the brass music itself. / The paper holds that although the rituals, performers, musical instruments and musical language continued to change throughout during years, the local cultural traditions and people's concepts are still maintained III the Western musical practices. The brass bands chosen by history are also creating and reconstructing the history and tradition. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 鄭思. / "2013年1月". / "2013 nian 1 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 80-85). / Electronic reproduction. Rediscovering James Robert Gillette's Vistas

Kitelinger, Jennifer 12 1900 (has links)
James Robert Gillette (1886-1963) was an early advocate for original wind band music at a time when marches and band transcriptions of orchestral music contributed heavily to the wind band repertoire. Primarily known as an influential, in-demand organist and composer, Gillette became the director of the Carleton College band program in Northfield, Minnesota in 1924. Taking an innovative approach to building, organizing, and programming, Gillette transformed that group into the Carleton Symphony Band and led a wider push for the symphonic band movement. In promoting his ideals of the symphonic band, he composed and arranged music specifically for the Carleton Symphony Band. One of his original works, Vistas, was widely performed and well-received in the decade just prior to and after its publication in 1934. Despite the popularity of the piece at that time, it has since gone out of print and is a rarely performed piece from Gillette's repertoire. This dissertation focuses on Vistas, Gillette's second published tone poem. This study starts with the examination of the history of Vistas from its origins as a movement in Gillette's transcription of Paul Robert Fauchet's Symphony in B-flat to its subsequent transformation and publication as an original work for band. Next, the performance history and reception of Vistas in the United States is traced and described from the year of publication to the present day. Finally, discrepancies present in the 1934 publication of Vistas are addressed through the creation of a performance edition. This performance edition also provides modifications to make the piece more widely accessible to wind bands today and the full score is presented at the end of the study.

Social Consciousness in Wind Band Music of the Early 21st Century, Represented through a Study of Three Wind Band Works: Symphony No. 2-Migration by Adam Schoenberg, Silver Lining-Concerto for Flute and Wind Ensemble by Frank Ticheli, and Of Our New Day Begun by Omar Thomas

Eaddy, Jack A., Jr. 08 1900 (has links)
The wind band provides an outlet for composers to use their platform to reach performers, enlighten audiences, and heal communities. This document is an analysis of three composers' approach to incorporate social consciousness in their wind band music. Adam Schoenberg, Omar Thomas, and Frank Ticheli work with specific social justice issues to respond to specific events, allowing them to reach and empower performers and audiences, to heal, thrive and build past these events. The chapters contain each composer's biographical information, then provide detailed information of the three works; background and cursory information, the composer's use and understanding of the social justice issue and an extensive analysis of each work. The composers use compositional design techniques to convey their intent to share a specific message. This document provides insight through each composer's techniques and thought processes, providing a better understanding of the works. The knowledge gained will help conductors and performers understand social consciousness in wind band music.

Background information related to the musical development of Vaughan Williams, Grainger, and Stanhope is provided, noting the influence of the folk idiom in their compositional styles and Grainger's influence on the music of David Stanhope. An historical account of the two folk songs examines the events and compositional procedures related to the inclusion of "Lovely Joan" in Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Greensleeves. and Grainger's use of "Rufford Park Poachers" in Lincolnshire Posv. Emphasis is placed on the subsequent compositional treatment of the folk elements in Stanhope's wind band compositions. A detailed analysis of Stanhope's compositional style includes structural, harmonic, melodic, and historical considerations, while specifically illuminating his contemporary and innovative approaches to scoring and instrumentation.
