The benefits of lending relationship: evidence from foreign invested enterprises in China. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / ProQuest dissertations and theses

January 2002 (has links)
As China's accession to World Trade Organization is certain, China is now at the critical stage of changing from a planned economy to a market economy and the banking system is also undergoing dramatic changes. By focusing on the local and foreign currency loan markets for foreign invested enterprises in China, this thesis can make three major contributions: (1) providing the first empirical research to test the theories of financial intermediation in China; (2) modeling the competition among local and foreign banks by analyzing the borrowing pattern of foreign invested enterprises and their reliance on foreign and local banks; (3) examining the role of relationship banking and other factors in determining the loan pricing of both local and foreign currency loans by foreign and local banks. / From the empirical results, I found empirical support to the financial intermediation theories that the longer the banking relationship, the lower the rate on the foreign currency loans, suggesting that the length of relationship as a proxy for the private information the bank obtains over the course of relationship helps overcome information asymmetry between the banks and the foreign invested enterprises in the sample. I also found empirical support to the rate reducing effects of other key factors such as the majority shareholding by the foreign sponsors and provision of third party guarantee. However, none of these important factors are associated with the renminbi-denominated loan pricing. That points to the primary issue of the prevailing banking system in China that the regulated local currency interest rates prevented the commercial banks from playing a "real" role of financial intermediation. The empirical test also shows that the local currency loan pricing will be reduced as FIEs maintain relationship with more banks. This suggests that banks compete for customers by offering cheaper credits. If competition is the predominant determinant of loan pricing and that such level of competition does not stimulate more innovative and better quality bank services and products as a means of differentiation, the inflexible Renminbi loan pricing will ultimately deteriorate the profitability of the banks and affect the financial health of the banking system. / Whilst China's accession to WTO is now certain, the liberalization of local currency interest rates will take time and be approached cautiously, and ultimately, hinge on the success of the banking reform and the institutional strengthening of Chinese banks. Determinants of unsecured lending : an empirical investigation of consumption, lending rates and deregulation in a South African context

Motau, Hlokammoni Grathel 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDF)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa has experienced a significant growth in household unsecured credit extension, igniting concerns around the potential negative impact of household indebtedness on the stability of the banking system. With the use of correlation and ordinary least squares, the study attempts to prove a relationship between growth in unsecured lending (dependent variable) and consumption, lending rates and de-regulation (independent variables). Although there is a correlation between growth in unsecured lending and interest rates, this was not statistically significant. The study also found a strong relationship between unsecured lending and the other independent variables. Due to income and wealth inequality exacerbated by the past political dispensations as well as continued rise in the cost of living, unsecured lending provides a source of supplementary income that allow households to smooth their consumption expenditure over their life-cycle. On a longerterm basis, the country needs to gear itself to focus primarily on channelling resources towards productive investments. Quality education and skills as well as a culture of entrepreneurship and wealth creation should be cultivated at a young age.

Income Concepts Used by Bank Loan Officers in a Metropolitan Environment

McGillivray, Robert E. 08 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this study is concerned is that of the income concepts used by bank loan officers in dealing with financial information, as compared to the income concepts used by the accounting profession. A series of twenty different financial situations were designed which required the loan officer to make a decision as to an income concept before he could compute the answer to the questions in income, profit, gain, and change in wealth which were asked for in each situation. The loan officers' answers to each situation were then compared with the accountants' answers, using generally accepted accounting principles. In addition, comparisons were made between the income concepts used by the different classes of loan officers and sixteen environmental factors to determine what influence, if any, these factors might have on the answer given by the bank loan officers. The two purposes of the study were to show that bank loan officers do not calculate net income by the same methods as accountants, and to determine if there are environmental factors which would influence the method the loan officer used to compute his answers.

Cross-Border Contagion: An Empirical Analysis of the Current Financial Crisis in Central and Eastern Europe / Cross-Border Contagion: An Empirical Analysis of the Current Financial Crisis in Central and Eastern Europe

Žáková, Kristýna January 2011 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to examine cross-border contagion effects during the 2007-09 crisis in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and from all the possible propagation channels, it chooses to focus on cross-border bank loans. It tries to discover which global and local factors had significant influence on the changes in bank loans from banks in source (lending) countries to banks, as well as households, corporations and government in host (borrowing) countries. The main research method is a panel data regression model. The empirical results suggest that both local and global factors had influence on the changes in cross-border loans, i.e. helped to spread the 2007-09 crisis to CEE. The significant local factors were macroeconomic and financial characteristics of both source and host countries, such as their GDP growth differential, interest rate differential, FDI, or profitability and health of the banking sector. The significant global factors were the expected market volatility and investors' risk appetite/aversion which was an indicator of "pure" contagion. The main contribution of this thesis lies in its focus on CEE and the analysis of investors' behavior based on their changing risk appetite.
